Innovating Finance Ops with hybrid teams
In a sector not typically known for pushing boundaries, Upwork’s finance department is proving innovation is possible by adopting a modern work model utilizing independent talent to scale and fill talent gaps. After early success on the accounting team, CFO Brian Kinion encouraged other department teams to tap talent from the Upwork platform. And it’s helped them transform operations, access niche skills, and meet tight deadlines. With independent professionals, finance successfully navigated an IPO, tackled hundreds of backlogged support issues, and improved employees’ work/life balance.
Mitigating data & privacy concerns with technology
It can be tricky to grant remote access to sensitive financial information, but the team uses technology to build in safeguards. Kinion says, “You have to be very thoughtful about what data you share, but with cloud technology it’s possible to partition data. You can anonymize and separate it in a way that makes the most sense for you,” including setting permissions on a by-folder basis.
Improving the bottom line and driving efficiency in all lanes
Going hybrid with remote talent has helped the department both improve the bottom line and drive greater efficiency. Teams can kick off projects at the end of the day, and have them done when they return to work the next morning. Backlogs are a thing of the past, full-time employees have more flexibility, and in-demand skills are accessed faster and more cost effectively than traditional staffing. From sales ops to controllership to information security, these hybrid teams are innovating and working smarter with remote talent. Kinion is proving that even in traditionally conservative industries like finance, there’s always an opportunity to innovate.
