Academic advisors have a huge hand in a student’s educational journey. Not only are they providing constant guidance and support to help them achieve academic success, but they are also working hard to develop individualized academic plans. Students turn to academic advisors for concerns about their education and to seek opportunities/additional resources that will add to their success. 

Responsibilities

  • Guide students on course selection, degree requirements, and academic policies
  • Develop personal academic plans and track student progress towards degree completion
  • Design and implement targeted academic interventions for students who require additional support, including tutoring, study groups, or workshops on academic skills like writing or research
  • Work with students to explore career options, develop job search strategies, and prepare for post-graduation opportunities, including resume building, interview preparation, and networking advice
  • Regularly assess student needs, satisfaction, and outcomes through surveys, interviews, or focus groups to continually improve advising services and student experiences
  • Actively participate in professional development opportunities to enhance advising skills and knowledge, including attending workshops, conferences, and webinars relevant to academic advising and student affairs

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Education, Counseling, or a related field preferred

  • Prior experience in academic advising or student affairs
  • Excellent soft and communication skills. Ability to work with diverse student groups
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to multitask and set up priorities 
  • Familiarity with academic policies and procedures in higher education
  • Expertise in using student information systems, data management tools, and office software
  • Commitment to promoting student success, retention, and graduation
  • Understanding various career paths and the ability to guide students in aligning their academic choices with their career aspirations.
  • Ability to recognize signs of mental health challenges and provide appropriate referrals or support, contributing to the overall well-being of students
  • Competence in managing and resolving conflicts that may arise between students, or between students and the institution, in a constructive manner
  • Ability to adapt to evolving educational trends, technologies, and student needs, especially in the rapidly changing landscape of higher education
  • Knowledge of curriculum design and the ability to provide input on course development to ensure they meet educational standards and student needs
  • Ability to network with other departments and external organizations for student benefit, such as securing internships, job placements, or additional educational resources
  • Providing one-on-one coaching or mentoring to students, particularly in areas like study skills, time management, and goal-setting
  • Understanding of national and state educational regulations and standards, as well as accreditation requirements
  • Competence in conducting research and analysis to stay informed about educational trends and to contribute to the institution's strategic planning
