I bring 25 years of professional expertise to the sacred process of writing. I am a published author, academically-trained scholar, and executive manager in the nonprofit world. My passion, skill, and experience place me in a unique position to assist individual and organizational clients. I offer ghost writing, editing, and research. Resumes, cover letters, Personal Statements, bios (not Wikipedia), and LinkedIn profiles are my specialty areas. In September 2007, I founded Writing the World, LLC in the Colorado area, U.S.A. I revamped my organizational website and started a blog on Hope from History in November 2013. Beginning with one editing client, I have worked with an additional twelve individuals and groups. Throughout my schooling and career, my writing has been an asset. In the early part of my professional life as a social worker, I wrote newsletter articles for the organization. I continued this journalistic strand in almost every other organization. Graduate work further strengthened my writing along with honing my critical thinking and research capabilities. With this foundation, I became a published author in 2003. I have book reviews in scholarly journals, chapters in edited collections, numerous encyclopedia articles, and my forthcoming book from Swedenborg Foundation. Starting in the nonprofit world in 1993, I became a successful grant writer and project manager. At New Foundations Nonviolence Center (1993-2005), I rose from Development Director to Executive Director. I continued in the latter capacity at Colorado Women’s Agenda (2005-6) where I developed three new programs: Inclusiveness Initiative, Grassroots Organizing, and Internship Program. I provided grant writing and editorial skills to Greater Denver Interfaith Alliance (2007-10). I worked with two primary nonprofits through my business. With Votaw Colony Museum, Inc., I co-coordinated two-day public history events held in different locations in eastern Kansas (2006-11). I especially enjoyed my project management work at BlackPast.Org (2008-13) where I obtained photo permissions for the group’s online reference center and developed a new section on African American and African Diaspora Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) history.

How does a qualified scientist end up as a freelance writer and editor? The twist in my career is explained by this simple fact: I fell in love with words. Words sweep people away on journeys to discover new worlds. They forge ideas, foster relationships and found empires. In the right hands, words are infinitely powerful. As a writer, editor, science communicator and children's author, I am skilled at employing words to suit my purposes. If you have an audience that needs to hear something, I can help you bring your message to life in the following ways: • I line edit and proofread just about any topic from informal blogs to academic papers. I enjoy moulding sentences into their best version so that content is easy to digest. • As a science communicator, I have experience in content creation for websites, blogs, fact sheets, brochures, posters and infographics for an array of topics ranging from nanotechnology to climate change for government agencies and academic institutions. • I do academic editing for any biology-related field since I hold a master's degree in biotechnology. • I really love creating content for children! I have years of experience writing educational articles for children's magazines and as a hobby, I write and publish fiction for children. I am looking forward to new challenges and will gladly walk with you as we develop your writing project and shape it into a sharp, professional product.

I am an Ivy-league trained English Professor with over 20 years of experience in academic writing and publishing. A published writer myself, I have helped a range of writers, from first-year composition students to seasoned professionals. I have been a reader and on the editorial boards of several academic journals, read admissions essays (graduate and undergraduate) and judge writing contests. I have also served as a department chair and on my former college's appointment, promotion and tenure committee. I have a particular expertise and passion for working with graduate students. (See below for more information about my services as a thesis and dissertation coach and editor and my specialized profile for college and graduate admissions services). As a developmental editor and writing coach, my goal is to help get your writing into the world regardless of where you are at in the process: whether you already have a manuscript and a contract from a press or simply a rough idea of something you'd like to write. As a writing coach, I will meet you where you are and help you with any and every stage of the writing process--from the brainstorming and planning stages to the writing, revising and final editing to responding to reader reports and reviews and securing publication. I am a fast and careful proofreader and line editor, proficient in a number of citation styles, including MLA, Chicago, Oxford m, Harvard and APA, and able to carefully follow the publishing guidelines of the press you are working with. I am also conversant in a number of national Englishes. However, my true passion and skills lie in helping writers bring their projects to fruition. I am particularly good at taking a very rough, rough draft--or even a rough idea--and helping a writer massage it into a compelling and well-structured narrative. I am also quite good at helping writers who find themselves "stuck" in a particular project and need help crafting a plan to move forward. I offer a 10% discount to those who are the first in their families to go to college and to adjunct professors. Please feel free to reach out if you'd like to have a brief, no obligation conversation so I can learn more about your project and how I might help. THESIS AND DISSERTATION EDITOR AND WRITING COACH Writing a dissertation is hard, I know! I wrote one myself and, as an English professor for over 20 years, I have helped shepherd many students through the process. Unfortunately, not every graduate program provides their students with the kind of guidance and structure that most of us need for taking on a project of this size. That is where I come in. I taught graduate level writing for many years and have supported graduate students working in a variety of fields, including the social sciences, humanities, technology, business and finance, computer science and education. I am knowledgeable in a number of citation styles, including MLA, Chicago, APA, Harvard and Oxford and am a careful and efficient editor. However, my talents really lie in helping clients with larger holistic issues, including argument development, organization and structure, and responding to reader feedback. I’m also especially good at helping writers who get stuck in a project or are suffering from writer’s block. My mantra is that a done dissertation is the best dissertation! As with all my clients, I offer a 10 percent discount for first-generation college students. I’d be happy to have a 30 minute no-obligation conversation with you to hear about your project and how I can help.

I craft exceptional essays with unique and effective themes, creative storytelling, and intuitive flow. I will offer my diligence, focus, enthusiasm, and honesty along with my sharpened creative writing and critical thinking skills. When entrusting your application to an editor or college consultant, it is important to choose one that is familiar with the complete college application process and has deep knowledge on effective application writing, which is unlike other forms of writing. In addition, I have a passion for STEM and engineering. I would be honored to work with you! Hoping to connect and create.

WHAT YOU NEED: You've got the story, you'd just like some help telling it. You've got the product, but you need the creative copy and content marketing that will spread the word. You've got the grades, but will your personal statement get you into an Ivy League school? WHO I AM: I'm a Brooklyn-based writer and editor with over eight years of experience in journalism, editing, and writing both creative and promotional. As a student at the University of Southern California (USC), I studied Print & Digital Journalism for two years, during which time I contributed to numerous student and independent publications as a writer and editor. I switched majors my sophomore year and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Narrative Studies, an interdisciplinary writing and literature degree. Since 2015, I have operated a peer-to-peer editing service called Run The Jules, focusing mostly on remote editing for academic essays, college applications and medical/law school applications. My students have gained entry to prestigious institutions such as Brown University, UCLA, LMU, USC Keck Medical School, and Harvard Law School. I currently serve as the copy editor for monthly trade journal mg Magazine and a staff copywriter for 1o8 Agency, where I write blog posts, white papers and web copy for businesses in a variety of niches, from higher education to quantum computing. For three years, I served as Head Writer and Copy Editor for Lafayette Social, a Bay Area-based publication with a circulation of about 10,000. In addition to penning three of the magazine's feature stories each month, I edited and proofread the entire magazine from rough draft to final proof, ensuring that our content was consistent and professional. When I'm not editing, I work in music licensing and enjoy camping, going to concerts, and playing guitar. As a graduate of the Americorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), I value service to my community and spent years volunteering with food security and gardening-oriented nonprofits around the LA area. WHAT I OFFER: • proofreading/copy editing (digital content, blogs, academic writing and business writing) • content creation for blogs, online publications and marketing campaigns • editing and advising on college and graduate school application essays, cover letters, grants and scholarship essays • press releases, creative advertising copy, social media copy, promotional content • quick turnaround, reliable communication, constructive feedback Life is busy, and writing isn't easy. I’m an experienced postdoctoral scientist with a research background spanning the chemical and life sciences. As a freelancer, I’ve written or edited many journal manuscripts, articles, newsletters, grant applications and more. My main writing/editing experience includes: • Peer-reviewed journal articles. • Scientific review articles (website content and journal manuscripts). • Grant applications, especially for Innovate UK. • LinkedIn newsletters. I aim to write clear, engaging and well-researched material that appeals to the broadest possible audience without sacrificing scientific accuracy. As an editor, I work with clients to achieve similar goals while ensuring compliance with journal author guidelines or relevant style guides (such as editing for British English or US English). Since June 2023, I’ve worked as lead writer on six Innovate UK applications (including one Smart grant that received funding and a Biomedical Catalyst bid that was invited to interview). While in academia, I wrote or contributed to research grants for various funding bodies including BBSRC, MRC, EPSRC, Wellcome Trust and Cancer Research UK. Beyond this, I’ve written or edited for long-term clients in the recruitment and executive training fields and have worked with a few different companies in the life sciences space. I’ve regularly assisted Masters and PhD students with their dissertations by providing proofreading and mentoring services, so if you need support with your academic writing, I’d like to help! My academic research career generated more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles (including 16 as first or last author), and also gave me considerable experience in writing/reviewing papers and grant applications. My academic publications span the areas of organic chemistry, biochemistry and drug discovery, and now have over 1,000 combined citations (Google Scholar). I’ve built up a broad knowledge base across the chemical, biomedical and life sciences, gained through working on a diverse range of research projects over the years (with various collaborations across academia and industry) and collaborating with many freelance clients. I’m highly familiar with reviewing and searching the scientific literature to research a topic in depth, then producing concise writing based on this if required (see portfolio for examples). My main areas of scientific interest are biochemistry and molecular biology, enzymology, synthetic and medicinal chemistry, drug discovery and screening assay design. From my wider reading, I have additional knowledge in DNA damage/repair, cell biology, biomedical science, cancer research and issues relating to diet and nutrition. Previous Upwork jobs have been varied and have covered topics including medicine, finance, business, recruitment, real estate and education.

Do you need to clean up or finalize your academic papers, journal manuscripts, thesis, or dissertation? I am your grammar, spelling, and punctuation police! I am results-driven and will honor the deadline(s) you set. My expertise is in APA style (both 6th and 7th editions). I also have copyedited/proofread/formatted papers and manuscripts in AMA, MLA, Vancouver, Harvard, and ASA styles. As your copyeditor, the goal is to make your work cohesive, consistent, and complete. I will revise your draft to make it free of grammatical and factual errors and correct any awkward language and overly wordy sentences. I focus on grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax (sentence structure) for corrections. For formatting, I will ensure fonts, layout, and style consistency according to guidelines (i.e., APA, university, etc.). As a proofreader, I will minimize embarrassing mistakes before publication, specifically looking for and correcting typographical and grammatical errors. I will also detect inconsistency in layout or fonts. My proofreading service will be the final check of your written work before submission to the university, journal editors, or publishers. I primarily use Microsoft Word using track changes for editing and proofreading. I have also used Google Docs through suggesting mode and OverLeaf (LaTex) for previous client work. If requested, I can use these tools. I deliver the work in two versions: tracking and no tracking changes. I pride myself on time management. Upon contract agreement, we will discuss a reasonable deadline for your work. I will send you the deliverables on or before the deadline. If there are any delays, I will inform you immediately. I want to emphasize that good copyediting or proofreading occurs when it is not hurried. Rush editing/proofreading work will incur additional fees.

I am a physician, psychiatrist, cultural anthropologist and writer. For the last 30 years I have lived and worked in the Himalayan region while doing a body of research on the nature of the healthy mind amongst Tibetan lamas. My research has been successful, and I've published five books and many papers on it. My work has also won an award from the American Anthropological Association. I did this research as a professor at Nepal's national university. I also gave free medical care to all of the monasteries and villages I visited to do my research. I'm also a really good psychotherapist. I love working with people and helping them find out and become the person they really are -- their true self. I am now coming back to western civilization to lecture and organize conferences about the nature of the healthy mind. My goal is to take my research and change our idea of what a healthy mind is. It is important for humanity to have the correct idea of what a healthy mind is. As matters stand now, all societies bring up their young to have egos. My research has shown that the ego causes two broad realms of malady. It causes the individual people to suffer, and it causes the identity-based conflicts of racism, misogyny, terrorism, religious intolerance and war. We have found that, in contrast, the egoless mind is a healthy mind; given the paradox that the egoless mind has an ego. In keeping with these findings, the goal, once again is to change our notion of the healthy mind. In the meantime, as I transition back to working in America, I'd like to find some interesting work and income!

My work as an academic editor and coach satisfies two kinds of client: 1. PhD and Master's degree students who need support in completing their thesis or dissertation; 2. Researchers who need assistance in preparing their journal articles and reports for publication. Although there are many similarities in the work, since both require a strong knowledge of academic writing, understanding of scholarly standards, and commitment to excellence and rigor, there are some differences as outlined below. 1. PhD or Master's Students Completing a PhD or Master’s degree is difficult enough at the best of times. So, as well as editing manuscripts to meet the university's expectations, I also specialize in working with graduate students who have run into extra challenges along the way. I can help if you’re: • Lost and stuck because you don’t understand what your supervisor wants • Unclear about how to improve the structure or narrative flow of your thesis or dissertation • Not sure how to write a Literature Review • Conducting a specialized technical or medical Systematic Literature Review • Confused about why you need a Theoretical Framework (and what is that anyway??) • Wondering what to put into your Introduction, or Conclusion • Mixing up your Methodology with your Findings and Discussion • Recovering from an illness or a personal loss and need help re-engaging with your studies • Still at the proposal stage and trying to understand what's needed for a PhD or Master's If you want specific proofreading and editing services, I can improve and polish your drafts In particular, I can help with: • Academic English, including correct spelling, grammar and punctuation • Using narrative citations as well as parenthetical citations to make the message clearer • Complying with your university’s style guide (e.g., APA7, Chicago, Harvard, etc.) • Structuring your chapters, and ensuring there is narrative flow • Making sure that you’re writing a thesis or dissertation, not a book full of your opinions • Improving your AI-generated drafts to ensure authenticity and a voice that's your own. 2. Researchers If you are an individual researchers, or a member of a research team, and are subject matter experts who need to present their findings to meet the highest standards. I can assist by: • Proofreading to improve the English so that the research is clearly explained • Editing documents to follow academic protocols for format and structure • Applying the style guide preferences (APA, Chicago, AMA, etc.) of particular scholarly journals • Ensuring that reports or proposals are written to suit the readership • Checking that articles and reports have the expected sections and subsections • Verifying that proposals to government agencies are comprehensive. Whether you are a student, a researcher or a faculty member, I invite you to find out more in a free 10-minute introductory Zoom Call. Ask questions, tell me more about your study, find out how I can help. Please check the positive feedback from my many satisfied clients, and then get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you. How to Hire Top Academic Editors

How to hire academic editors

Academic editors follow strict style guides such as APA, MLA, and Chicago. Academic editors also adhere to the requirements and standards set by organizations such as ISO (International Standards Organization).

So how do you hire academic editors? What follows are some tips for finding top academic editors on Upwork.

How to shortlist academic editing professionals

As you’re browsing available academic editing contractor, it can be helpful to develop a shortlist of the independent contractors you may want to interview. You can screen profiles on criteria such as:

  • Industry fit. You want an academic editor who understands your industry so they can help you figure out how best to reach your target market.
  • Project experience. Screen candidate profiles for specific skills and experience (e.g., editing a grant application).
  • Feedback. Check reviews from past clients for glowing testimonials or red flags that can tell you what it’s like to work with a particular academic editor.

How to write an effective academic editing job post

With a clear picture of your ideal academic editor in mind, it’s time to write that job post. Although you don’t need a full job description as you would when hiring an employee, aim to provide enough detail for an independent contractor to know if they’re the right fit for the project.

An effective academic editing job post should include:

  • Scope of work: From editing literature reviews to term papers, list all the deliverables you’ll need.
  • Project length: Your job post should indicate whether this is a smaller or larger project.
  • Background: If you prefer experience with certain industries, subjects, or style guides, mention this here.
  • Budget: Set a budget and note your preference for hourly rates vs. fixed-price contracts.

ACADEMIC EDITING SPECIALISTS FAQ

What is academic editing?

Academic editing is the practice of editing academic documents such as research reports, grant applications, and term papers.

Here’s a quick overview of the skills you should look for in academic editing professionals:

  • Academic editing and writing
  • Formatting and citation styles
  • Subject matter expertise (e.g., medical writing and editing)

Why hire academic editors?

The trick to finding top academic editors is to identify your needs. Do you need someone to help you format your term paper in APA style and ensure you cited sources correctly? Or do you require a subject matter expert to review your research paper before you submit it to peer review?

The cost of your project will depend largely on your scope of work and the specific skills needed to bring your project to life.

How much does it cost to hire an academic editor?

Rates can vary due to many factors, including expertise and experience, location, and market conditions.

  • An experienced academic editor may command higher fees but also work faster, have more-specialized areas of expertise, and deliver a higher-quality product.
  • A contractor who is still in the process of building a client base may price their academic editing services more competitively.

Which one is right for you will depend on the specifics of your project.
