I'm a professional publishing consultant, editor, and writing coach with years of experience in the publishing industry. When working with you, my mission is to be your go-to collaborator for your project by remaining highly focused on your needs and by providing high-quality deliverables tailored to your project's goals. We can begin working together at any stage of your publishing journey as my skills and services include writing coaching, beta reading, editorial assessments, developmental editing, copyediting, proofreading, and publishing consulting. Having worked at two university presses, I have experience with manuscripts of all types including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, short stories, business, and education. As a freelancer, I've also worked with fantasy, romance, crime fiction, and other commercial genres. I also have a BFA in Creative Writing and an MA in Management in the Creative Economy. As your editor, I'm dedicated to helping you develop high-quality content that meets all of your goals. I understand the effort that goes into your writing and your desire for your content to be the very best it can be. Therefore, my deliverables include not only the edited manuscript but also edit reports and collaborative revision hours that are all focused on elevating your manuscript. As your publishing consultant, I can guide you through the digital and print publishing process to deliver your content successfully, all while building your author or company brand. Together, we'll navigate your project through the independent, hybrid, or traditional publishing landscapes. I can develop a strong publishing strategy for your content and aid with project management for various steps of the process—from performing market research to executing sales strategies. As your writing coach, I can guide you through the writing process by providing exercises and techniques. I can identify the weaknesses and strengths of your writing and then provide solutions for how to eliminate those weak points and enhance your strengths. My goal is to be someone you can bounce your writing ideas off of and someone who supports and challenges you as a writer. If you're interested in working with me or have any questions, just send me a message telling me about your project and we'll go from there! Types of editing: Developmental Editing A developmental edit focuses on the big-picture elements of your content such as plot, character development, pacing, narrative, etc. For nonfiction books, it focuses on the structure of your content, what objectives need to be met by each section, delivery, etc. If your content is completed but hasn't undergone any revision yet, a developmental edit is where you want to start. When doing a developmental edit of your work, I provide you with a commented manuscript that highlights every suggested revision, edit report(s) with detailed explanations of issues and proposed solutions, and collaborative revision hours to discuss the edits. Line Editing Line editing is a high-level edit that focuses on the language, tone, pace, descriptions, voice, and writing style throughout the manuscript. A line edit includes a mix of direct edits and recommendations for additional content or cuts. When doing a line edit of your work, I provide you with an edited version (using MS Word track changes so you can review the edits) and a style sheet for the specific terminology used in your work (adhering to the Chicago Manual of Style). Copyediting A copyedit focuses on the readability of your content by correcting for grammar, inconsistencies, awkward phrasing, sentence structure, repetitions, etc. When doing a copyedit of your work, I provide you with an edited version (using MS Word track changes so you can review the edits) and a style sheet for the specific terminology used in your work (adhering to the Chicago Manual of Style). Proofreading Proofreading focuses on correcting typos, spelling, punctuation, and other small errors. This is the last phase of editing. When proofreading your content, I provide you with an edited version (using MS Word track changes so you can review the edits) and a style sheet for the specific terminology used in your work (adhering to the Chicago Manual of Style).

"Megan does great work - in addition to being a superb editor and working with us like partner on our project, she is punctual, thorough, and has great communication." — Client feedback on Bible study project My goal as a copy editor and proofreader is to make sure the ideas in your book are clear and easy to read so you are confident about sharing it with the world. I will ensure your text remains in your voice and style while refining your content and removing any errors that might distract your readers from the encouragement or information you want to give them. While I enjoy working on a variety of texts, I specialize in Christian books, including memoirs, educational books, novels, and a devotional. Secular books I have edited include mystery, sci-fi, and adventure novels; picture books; and self-help titles. I have experience helping many new authors to reach their publishing goals. I will communicate with you in a clear, friendly, and encouraging way. I will make corrections and give you honest feedback, but you will make the final decisions on your work. I can also write your book description or help you craft one that will attract readers by giving them a taste of what your book offers. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism and English, and I worked as a copy editor at a daily newspaper for three years. While I have no formal Bible training, I do have a good layman’s knowledge of the Bible from my personal reading and participating in and leading studies. I am trained in Associated Press (AP) style. I also have the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition) and the Christian Writer's Manual of Style (4th edition) as additional references. PREFERRED PROJECTS Currently, I am only taking on new projects that are books. I am most interested in working on novels and Christian books, but I can help you polish any book and work toward your publishing goals. I am happy to work with authors or publishing companies.

I am a highly detail-oriented meticulous perfectionist with the goal of accuracy in everything. A native US English speaker, I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in English. My aim in every job is to exceed expectations. “Marilyn was everything we were looking for and a lot more. We've worked with a number of editors and she tops the list. We've already referred her to others and will use her again.” "Marilyn is the best editor I've ever hired. She caught more errors than my first several editors combined. She made 1,560 revisions. Incredible! She's worth every penny." “I've had quite a few people do editing and you're the only one that I trust to do the job right and do it quickly.” "Great work! Am I ever glad we found you!" "I am pleased with your work and your attention to detail and how you communicate with me."

Top skills in academic, business, fiction, and nonfiction for proofreading, editing, and formatting: I thrive on finding mistakes in grammar, spelling, context, syntax, redundancies, repetitions, punctuation, and in facts. The Chicago Manual of Style and APA are home for me, and Webster's Unabridged is my main daily haunt. I also work in MLA, GPO, Vancouver, Harvard, AMA, and AP as well. I love digging into research, too. Academics are my first love, but I am just as comfortable working with businesses and helping authors with their prose. I enjoy coaching and explaining why I am suggesting changes, so there can be growth on the author's part if so desired. It's not about the money—it's about the game! I like the challenge of finding as many errors as possible. I like the challenge of making you look your best. This is why I prefer flat rate to hourly. With a flat fee, the work can be developed without worry. It can be delivered with pride. Because my job is to make your work look good, in most cases, I can't do that while rushing. So unless a rush job is timed appropriately for the level of detailed editing that I do, I can't accommodate rush jobs. Feel free to ask though. It never hurts to ask. There are periods of downtime occasionally. And I like to give back to the community. So, if there isn't a lot of money to work with, please inquire. It never hurts to ask, and if I do have the time, I may be able to help. If you do, please mention that you read my review and would like help on the pricing. To learn about my editing process, ask me for my bio.

Have you written a novel or short story and are unsure if the story is complete? What about your characters--are they fully developed? Will your conflicts keep the tension high and keep your readers turning pages? If you're not sure, let's talk about a developmental edit. Have you written a nonfiction book or article but are unsure if the whole thing makes sense from start to finish? Are your ideas fully fleshed out, or are there gaps that your readers may fall into? Let's talk about your content and your organization. Have you written something--book-length or not, fiction or nonfiction--and you're confident about the big-picture elements but you're not sure if your writing style is strong enough for publication yet? Do you think your work could use some help at the sentence and paragraph level? Let's talk about a line edit. Are you "this close" to publication but you want another set of eyes on your work, just to ensure there are no typos, grammar mistakes, or missing words? Let's talk about proofreading. Since 2011, I've been helping my clients polish their writing, and I'd love to talk to you about yours. Prior to freelancing, I taught high school and middle school English and spent many years as a newspaper reporter and editor. I've got the experience and the education to help you. I know grammar rules backwards and forwards, as well as both the Chicago Manual of Style and AP style, and I have no problem meeting deadlines. Your manuscript, paper, article, or email will shine when I'm finished with it. I welcome your questions and am looking forward to learning more about your project!

I offer adaptable editing, where I start by learning what the author's goals are including the intention of the writing as well as the desired readership. From there we work together to make your document the best version of itself. I work Monday to Friday (PST) and pride myself on being responsive and meeting deadlines. Returning clients love that I coach writers (at their request) to grow and therefore need less editing. I am interested in plain language editing, trauma-informed editing, and decolonizing editing and work to grow in these areas. I offer services in proofreading, copyediting (with optional line editing), and developmental editing. I'll also offer manuscript or chapter critiques. I have 20+ years of professional experience in the writing and editing industry. My education includes: MA in Creative Writing, Grad. Cert. in Instructional Design, BA in English, BAJ (Journalism), a Professional Editing Standards Certificate. I'm a member of Editor's Canada and CIEP (UK) and am familiar with common style guides (CMoS, CP, AP, APA, MLA). “(Shara) understands style sheets; excellent vocabulary, sense of idiom; catches nearly every subtle error – the ones that only the best candidates do. Shows both mechanical and literary editing ability.” I'm TOP RATED on Upwork. Let's connect! Find out more at shara dot ca

I am a NYC-trained editor with many years of experience. My specialties include, but are not limited to: memoir, business, education, and children's books. I often provide copy editing, line editing, fact checking, and proofreading as an "all-in-one" service. Whether a compelling blog article, cutting-edge business book, riveting memoir, children's picture book, or an educational resource, I keep a keen eye on grammar and mechanics as well as the organizational flow of the text. I work hard to maintain the author’s authentic voice while bringing to life the message they’ve been moved to tell. In addition, I specialize in applying a native (U.S.) English tone to writings created by non-native speakers. My career in publishing began with a seventeen-year in-house position with Scholastic, Inc., a major educational publisher headquartered in New York City. Following this I worked remotely for a decade, still with Scholastic, from a tiny lake cabin deep in the North Woods of Wisconsin. Now in Music City, I am doing what I love most: freelance editing and proofreading all sorts of writing, including full-length books. I also offer audiobook pre-production prep and post-production proofreading (rates vary). Favorite quotes: “Line editing isn’t about correction. It’s about showing the writer the power of their own voice.” — Christina M. Frey “Editing your own book is like giving yourself a tattoo. It hurts too much, and the perspective is all wrong.” — Helen H. Moore Testimonials: "Great to work with, she saw my vision and expanded it. Fast turnaround time and friendly supportive prompt communication." — Michelle Avis, children's book rhyming storybook author "Is there room here to describe not only Shawn's professional editorial brilliance, but her MASTERY with personal communication and project management? I hired Shawn to proofread my 300+ page personal memoir and in additional to polishing it to a beautiful shine, she provided a calming and supportive voice to the very end. I honestly can't even express how important that aspect of her work was to my project. I feel so grateful that I found her, and that she walked me across the finish line with such grace and expertise. She made my book so much better, and she did it all with heart and spirit. I could not recommend her with more enthusiasm!!" — Kristy Sweetland, author of the award-winning memoir, Stark Raving Zen Editor | Proofreader | Ghost-RE-writer

With over ten years in the indie publishing industry, I know what goes into producing a novel. I’ve been in your shoes, and I can appreciate the work it takes to see your masterpiece come to life. I have been professionally writing since 2010. In that time, I’ve penned and published more than 30 books, including two on the writing and publishing process. When I’m not writing novels, I have a regular column on First Comics News, I run a weekly publishing podcast, and I'm the owner of Rising Sign Books, an a la carte self-publishing assistance service. I have an intimate understanding of the process and financial burden of editing, formatting, and covering a book. I've been in the trenches, so I know how to help you get through this process, so you can enjoy the thrill of holding your book in your hands. EDITING An extra set of eyes, impartial to the story, is exactly what you need in the final stage of writing to produce something for public consumption. Authors are too close to their work to see the mistakes. Our brains play a little trick on us when we read our writing. We know what we meant to say, so our brain puts that filter on as we read the brilliance we’ve slaved over. I can provide that extra set of eyes needed to catch plot holes, inconsistencies, and grammatical mishaps. There are two levels of editing every manuscript should go through before being published. Developmental—Corrects content. Content level editing that focuses on plot structure, characters and their arcs, consistency in characterization, dialogue, and believability. A developmental edit will generate considerable revisions and sometimes rewriting. Copyediting—Corrects language only. Spelling, capitalization, punctuation, verb tenses, sentence structure, paragraph lengths, echoes, word choices, & missed words. A copyedit will generate a grammatically clean manuscript. BOOK FORMATTING Layout, and design is quite a frustrating process, and each version (ebook, softcover, and hardcover) will have different layout requirements (see your printer’s FAQ’s for specifics). I can help. My book formatting services include the following: Standardizing font, paragraphs, and justifying text Copyright page verbiage Table of Contents (clickable for ebook) Active Hyperlinks (clickable for ebooks) Custom headers for chapters, acknowledgments, forwards, and dedications Drop Caps (if requested) Bullets, number lists Page Numbering Chapter starting on the right side (if requested) BOOK COVER CREATION For cover creation, I take a multi-step process to create a book design that speaks to the genre, target age range, and format the book will be delivered in. Before we begin, I will need some information from you about your specific project, so feel free to reach out and let's discuss your publishing needs. For more information about me and the author services I provide, please stop by my Rising Sign Books website, or you can look me up by name for social proof (Katie Salidas). You can read customer reviews and check out other ways to assist you in bringing your book to the market!

Passionate children's book editor with 15+ years experience in picture books, middle grade fiction, and nonfiction for companies such as Disney and Penguin. I have spent the past fifteen years working as a children’s book editor. There is nothing I love more than diving into a manuscript and helping to pull out all its potential. I believe in collaboration, but also brutal honesty. Too often as an author it is difficult to see where a story is not being true to itself. That’s where I come in. It's my job to tease out the scenes that are good and help you to make them great. To find the moments that aren't quite working and figure out how to turn them into the strongest scenes in the story. Together, we can shape your book into what you always dreamed it would be. I began my career at Sterling Publishing, working primarily on nonfiction titles. Although I thought I wanted to be in fiction, I found that I loved the challenge of nonfiction. Helping to explain sometimes complex subject matter in a way children could understand and finding a new angle on content that had often been covered more than once was exciting, and I loved learning from my authors as I developed their books. Today I know more about the solar system, the ghosts haunting the White House, and how to start a successful babysitting company than I ever dreamed I would! Following a new career opportunity, I moved from Sterling to Penguin. With the move came a change in the types of books I edited, and I began to work on picture books and middle grade fiction, as well as licensed tie-in books. This change to licensed books ultimately led me to Disney, where I spent eight years editing books tied to the Disney Parks and to Disney movies. This work provided a whole new challenge, as I helped authors to create stories that were new and fresh, expanding the worlds of beloved characters far beyond that envisioned by the filmmakers, all while staying true to the world of Disney canon. This is a skill I have found to be incredibly valuable in today's landscape of books featuring modern retellings of classic tales. I was also afforded the opportunity to create original fiction, and had a chance to return to my roots, with nonfiction titles based on Disney heritage. In my time at Disney, I edited over eight hundred books. Among my favorites (and my most successful) were Hide and Hug Olaf, by Kevin Lewis, which sold over 400,000 copies, and Olaf's Night Before Christmas, which sold over 250,000 copies. Now, I'm excited to take on a new challenge: helping you to turn your book into exactly what you hope it will be. I look forward to working with you and, together, creating an absolutely fantastic book. Testimonials: “I’ve worked with Brooke for many years and can’t speak highly enough about her abilities as an editor. She has consistently elevated my work with her insights, and her creative comments never fail to inspire. I can’t imagine having written my books without her help, and consider myself fortunate to have worked with her.” --Jason Lethcoe, Author "Brooke is an excellent editor who inspires and guides the creative process in a highly competent and collaborative way. Having worked with her on several books now, I have no doubt that she similarly brings out the best in all of her authors."--Tania Zamorsky, Author

As a former English teacher, I have the expertise to edit all grammatical, syntax, voice, tone, and punctuation issues within a work. As a Top Rated editor, I have worked with authors in all genres of fiction and non-fiction novels, numerous e-books, manuscripts, magazines, and website articles. I especially enjoy working with first-time writers to direct them on the right path as they transition from a writer to a published novelist. My focus is on assisting my client to create a perfect presentation of his or her work. A writer has a vision, which is upheld and entrusted to the editor to protect and enhance while keeping the integrity of the original vision. I am here to help, not take advantage. I personally feel a project will run efficiently if there is trust, understanding, and an open line of communication between writer and editor; without this relationship, the work will suffer. I am a descriptive editor and deem communicating to your audience by utilizing details and specific examples in your book imperative. Additionally, I am strict about the proper use of grammar and punctuation in all works, as it is a reflection of the writer. I always take great pride in all my work and hope to work with you in the future.

[OCTOBER 2023: I'm proud to announce that I am now the recipient of an academic copy editing certification co-sponsored by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and the American Copy Editors Society (of which I am a paid member). For more, see either the Poynter or the ACESEditors website.] From 2007 to 2017 I was the owner of the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography, which published 40 books for total distribution of over 20,000 copies. Along the way, CCLaP's books won or were finalists for a half-dozen awards, including the Pushcart Prize, the Lambda Award for LGBTQ literature, and the Independent Publisher Book Award; and the center itself was named one of the 10 best indie presses in the United States by both BookRiot.com and Poets & Writers magazine. Now I bring that same award-winning deep editing experience to your own self-published or small-press manuscript, helping you hone it with a fine knife into the best book it can possibly be. I specialize in "developmental" editing (also known as "content editing"), taking a big-picture look at your manuscript and identifying strengths and weaknesses in plot, character, pacing, style and tone, and giving you no-bones advice about how "publishable" it currently is. I also regularly do copy editing (also known as "line editing"), focusing in on a word-by-word basis to correct mistakes in what my industry calls GUPS (grammar, usage, punctuation and spelling). Other services include simple "post-production proofreading" for typos and missing punctuation; complete rewriting of entire sections of text for better clarity; specialized academic work using the Chicago Manual of Style, APA and Bluebook; and short documents like memos, web articles, website copy and promotional material for enterprise and other corporate clients. I believe in being transparent and consistent with my fees, so here are my rates in advance: Simple proofreading for typos: 0.5 cents per word Developmental editing: 1 cent per word Copy editing: 1 cent per word Developmental + copy edit for the same document: 1.5 cents per word Rewriting text into a more readable form: 1.5 cents per word Doctoral dissertations: 2 cents per word Journalism: 3 cents per word Enterprise clients: 5 cents per word All of these rates are also open for discussion and best offers, so just drop me a line if you'd like to discuss the subject more. See my portfolio section at the bottom of the page for a broad selection of testimonials from authors I've worked with as a freelancer, links to some of the books CCLaP still has for sale at Amazon, and praise my books have garnered over the years from such publications as Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, the Chicago Tribune, HTMLGIANT, and more. I'm happy to say that I've had a top-rated designation here at Upwork (given to the top 5 percent of all freelancers based on client satisfaction scores) since 2021 without a break, and pretty consistently maintain a 100% job success score. I look forward to hearing from you. *Proud member of the American Copy Editors Society* *Proud member of the Romance Writers of America* AI PLEDGE: I promise that all work I complete for clients has been, and will always be, accomplished using only my human brain and ten human fingers, never using AI bots, Grammarly, or other software options. I encourage you to demand this promise from all the freelancer candidates you interview and work with!
