A social, behavioural and health sciences researcher with a background in psychology and over 14 years of experience, including 8 post-PhD, for longest at the University of Cambridge. My current role blends working on research projects, writing/ editing projects, and psychotherapy/ counselling/ coaching work. I am also a published author ("House Moving Therapy" - a book on using the physical clutter you confront during a house move to sort through the emotional mess that lies behind it as well as a book on the quest for one's true home). Degrees in psychology (BA, MA in Clinical and Counselling Psychology, MA in Work and Organizational Psychology), philosophy (MA in Philosophy and Ethics of Mental Health, PhD in the Philosophy of Science) and literature (minor). My most recent long-term research projects have been with the World Health Organization (editor of a special collection of peer-reviewed articles on the lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic), with Acas, the UK Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service, which deals with workplace relationships and conflict (analysis of a public consultation on flexible working) and with the Health Innovation Network (evaluation of an intra-organisational anti-racism project). My favourite research topics and contexts are complex, dynamic, messy, chaotic, dramatic ... I am committed to doing research which brings meaning, clarity and hope where they are most difficult to find and sustain. I've worked in digital health; global and humanitarian health; health systems recovery and resilience; palliative and end of life care; research ethics; military veterans' health; workplace well-being; organizational transformation; evidence synthesis and knowledge management ... I also do independent research on relationships, love, break-ups and conflict resolution, but this is still in book drafts which are a work in progress! I'm also infinitely curious and interested in engaging with new topics in the social, behavioural and health sciences, so do get in touch if some of my work is of interest but you don't see your topic! I am committed to writing up research and enabling others to write theirs in clear, accessible and engaging way. My 10 key papers have been downloaded, as full texts, over 70,000 times. Methodologically, I work with: qualitative approaches (interviews, focus groups, ethnographic work); quantitative methods and sources of data (surveys, audits of routinely collected administrative data); pictorial and other arts-based approaches; textual analysis methods; mixed methods research; theory-based approaches (e.g. realist evaluation and synthesis, ethical analysis, etc.); secondary research, etc. My PhD was on methods of research synthesis, of which the systematic review is an exemplar case. I have also developed a rich personal arsenal of what I call ‘rigorous shortcuts’ or ‘shortcuts to rigour’ – tools that enable maximum rigour when we don’t have the time or resources for the ideal study design. My work as a psychologist/ counsellor draws both on my research studies and lived experience. I have been trained in the psychodynamic tradition, with specialisations in psychodrama and arts therapy. I often suggest writing exercises and other forms of creative endeavours as a path to awareness and healing. I listen with the whole of my being but also engage in dynamic conversation with clients in which I may challenge and push them and also share my own experiences. As a psychologist who is also a researcher and critical thinker, I often end up doing hardcore uncomfortable thinking and digging for truths with my clients when the standard psychological advice and approaches just won't cut through the existential fog we are trying to lift together. I'd love to discuss your research, writing/ editing or psychotherapy/ counselling needs with you! Even if I'm not your person, I'll be keen to help you specify what you are after and offer suggestions on where to find it.

I’m an experienced postdoctoral scientist with a research background spanning the chemical and life sciences. As a freelancer, I’ve written or edited many journal manuscripts, articles, newsletters, grant applications and more. My main writing/editing experience includes: • Peer-reviewed journal articles. • Scientific review articles (website content and journal manuscripts). • Grant applications, especially for Innovate UK. • LinkedIn newsletters. I aim to write clear, engaging and well-researched material that appeals to the broadest possible audience without sacrificing scientific accuracy. As an editor, I work with clients to achieve similar goals while ensuring compliance with journal author guidelines or relevant style guides (such as editing for British English or US English). Since June 2023, I’ve worked as lead writer on six Innovate UK applications (including one Smart grant that received funding and a Biomedical Catalyst bid that was invited to interview). While in academia, I wrote or contributed to research grants for various funding bodies including BBSRC, MRC, EPSRC, Wellcome Trust and Cancer Research UK. Beyond this, I’ve written or edited for long-term clients in the recruitment and executive training fields and have worked with a few different companies in the life sciences space. I’ve regularly assisted Masters and PhD students with their dissertations by providing proofreading and mentoring services, so if you need support with your academic writing, I’d like to help! My academic research career generated more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles (including 16 as first or last author), and also gave me considerable experience in writing/reviewing papers and grant applications. My academic publications span the areas of organic chemistry, biochemistry and drug discovery, and now have over 1,000 combined citations (Google Scholar). I’ve built up a broad knowledge base across the chemical, biomedical and life sciences, gained through working on a diverse range of research projects over the years (with various collaborations across academia and industry) and collaborating with many freelance clients. I’m highly familiar with reviewing and searching the scientific literature to research a topic in depth, then producing concise writing based on this if required (see portfolio for examples). My main areas of scientific interest are biochemistry and molecular biology, enzymology, synthetic and medicinal chemistry, drug discovery and screening assay design. From my wider reading, I have additional knowledge in DNA damage/repair, cell biology, biomedical science, cancer research and issues relating to diet and nutrition. Previous Upwork jobs have been varied and have covered topics including medicine, finance, business, recruitment, real estate and education.

Having served as a professional editor and writer for more than ten years now, working with both fiction and nonfiction, my passion revolves around helping authors and publishers find the full potential of their manuscripts. My work is loosely split between working with indie authors and publishers, and so I also do work on blurbs, synopses, and queries, but only for works that I've edited or been directly involved in as a writing coach/consultant. In all tasks, though, I have an excellent eye for detail, and with my extended background as a writer and teacher, I can be depended upon to offer professional guidance at every turn, eliminate errors and inconsistencies, and meet all deadlines. By turns, I work as a writing coach, editor, and ghostwriter, matching my talents to my clients' needs. In each of these roles, I only take on projects that suit my skills--so, if you ask me to edit or write in a genre where I have no experience, I'll be the first to tell you I'm not your ideal fit. But, when I do take on a project, you can be sure that it will become a top priority and receive the attention and skill it deserves. When it comes to nonfiction, I'm got a varied background that crosses a variety of disciplines and types of writing. I've edited and copyedited a number of dissertations and academic articles within the humanities and sciences, and I've developed a close familiarity with details of grammar and citation styles (as I've worked as both a freelance copyeditor and as the assistant director of a university-level writing center). That said, academic work is no longer my focus, and you'll more often find me working on memoirs, self-help and business books, books related to health and wellness, and books that have some intersection with social justice, science/nature, current events, or culture. I've also worked on a number of books related to travel and history, as well as philosophy. In fiction, I have experience in various genres, including (but not limited to): science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, horror, suspense/thrillers, mystery, romance (of various subgenres, but especially paranormal, suspense, billionaire, dark, and contemporary), historical fiction, and literary fiction. My experience focuses on adult and YA material--I'm not the best fit for middle grade or children's books. Regarding editing, specifically: I've been freelancing on a full-time basis since August of 2014, and I love keeping an eclectic calendar so that I always have a fresh eye for each new manuscript. I track all work via Word's Track Changes feature, using the comments feature for feedback as needed. In terms of writing, I hire out as a fixer just as often as a writer--this means that I work through a complete novel, elevating the writing and 'fixing' issues that come up in relation to the story, character, pacing, genre, etc. Essentially, hiring me as a 'fixer' means that you've got a complete draft, and it's in decent shape, but you know it needs work and want it to reach the next level without your being directly involved in the revision. Many of my 'fixing' jobs come to me because an author needs to adjust word count up or down significantly, but is at a loss for how to do so without detracting from a project's quality or bringing in outside help. With nonfiction, I need to be 100% sure that I'm the right fit for a project before taking it on, so engaging in a detailed conversation ahead of hiring is always a must. My work in ghostwriting fiction has been focused around paranormals, suspense, romance, horror, SFF, and nonfiction, and I only hire out as a ghostwriter for adult work (vs YA). Lastly, I often serve as a writing coach, helping authors complete their first full manuscript or finish a project that's been languishing on their desktop for years. I take an immense amount of pride in my track record for helping first-time writers succeed as writers, and limit the number of coaching clients I take on at any given time in order to make sure I'm available on short-notice for meetings, crises, and content reviews/edits. This process looks different for every client and project, as I tailor my approach to each individual and job, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about how it might best work for you.

I craft exceptional essays with unique and effective themes, creative storytelling, and intuitive flow. I will offer my diligence, focus, enthusiasm, and honesty along with my sharpened creative writing and critical thinking skills. When entrusting your application to an editor or college consultant, it is important to choose one that is familiar with the complete college application process and has deep knowledge on effective application writing, which is unlike other forms of writing. In addition, I have a passion for STEM and engineering. I would be honored to work with you! Hoping to connect and create.

I recently completed a Ph.D. in Environmental Psychology, during which time I achieved a portfolio of published academic work and became skilled across multiple different aspects of the social science research process. I am able to proofread and edit academic manuscripts as well as more general texts, ensuring that they are ready for submission or publication. I can also assist with conducting literature reviews (systematic or non-systematic), as well as designing research studies and conducting data analysis using R Studio. I have recently returned to full-time work, and so have limited time available for freelance work. I still have a small amount of time available on evenings and weekends, and so am happy to be contacted about quick projects up to 10 hours, or longer projects without immediate deadlines. Note: I am currently only be able to be contacted through Upwork messaging, and cannot facilitate video or voice calls. Apologies for the inconvenience.

The best writing is precise, concise, accurate, and accessible to a non-specialist. I am a native English speaker with extensive editing and writing experience. I am comfortable writing about anything in science or commerce, and specialize in the natural sciences, medicine, psychology, history, and the social sciences. Cryptocurrency has become a subspecialty of mine. I can edit and write about any topic. As a retired professor with a Ph.D., I have published over 70 papers. Forty of those papers have been cited at least 40 times! You can see all my work on Google Scholar, linked on my portfolio. For 15 years, I was an associate editor of "Systematic Biology", one of the highest impact journals in science. I guided many doctoral dissertations to successful completion and was head of admissions in my department. I have a strong record in writing proposals and have been awarded seven NSF grants. I have years of experience in teaching as well, with demonstrated success at primary, secondary, undergraduate and graduate levels. This experience has provided skills in explaining things to any targeted audience, from 5 year-olds to professors. Just because I am capable of writing highly complex technical stuff does not mean that I cannot communicate to a general audience. Please do not invite me to interview for fixed-price jobs. I prefer hourly rates so that I can offer you meticulous service, without rushing.
