Summary

We are seeking a skilled frontend developer with expertise in HTML/HAML/CSS/SASS and Bootstrap 5.3 for an online startup marketplace for buying, selling, and trading tabletop games. The app is built with Ruby on Rails. You are not expected to be nor become a Rails expert by any means, but you must be able to at least install and run the environment on your machine. We will help you get started. You will work with me (web developer) and also the designer. Your opinion is very welcome if you have good suggestions and have convincing arguments. Your CSS work must be responsive. Responsiveness is always a priority and not an afterthought. You always check what pages look like in all sizes before calling it done. We are minimalists in design and code. For most pages, we only use 1 major breakpoint. If you need more than 1 breakpoint, you need to justify it. We are looking for the kind of person who sees a desktop design and immediately spots potential problem areas transitioning to a small screen. We try to keep to what bootstrap provides for free in terms of responsiveness - e.g. columns that stack automatically on small screens. You care about organization and browser performance. We try to be semantic in our html and keep most of the styling in SASS files, and we try not to deeply nest the styling. You know when to use an SVG and when to use WebP. Written communication is important. You must be reasonably proficient with git and github. We do pull requests and topic branches. We use slack, figma, trello, and github asynchronously, and we value timely but reasonable responses. We emphasize home/work balance, but we can't always be wondering where you are and why you're not responding. Occasionally we do video meetings, but 95% of our communication is written. There will be a small test project so you can demonstrate your skills. Big bonus points if you come prepared with ruby/rails already installed in your environment. We are looking for someone who can put in 10-15 hours weekly and can focus for at least a couple hours at a time - i.e. not 15 minutes here, 30 minutes there, but a solid continuous focused 2 hours. At the beginning, we require you to push your work to GitHub at the end of any day that you work so that we can see that your code matches our expectations of the hours you logged. You must be able to do most work in U.S. Central time working hours of 9am - 5pm. Minimum requirements Expert knowledge in CSS, SASS, HTML, bootstrap 5.3. GitHub proficiency. Big Pluses Ruby on Rails experience. Github repositories or at least example sites demonstrating recent work.
