Most proofreaders hold a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or an equivalent area. You can have a degree in just about any area, however, as long as you have an excellent understanding of, and proficiency in, the written language.
What does a freelance proofreader do?
A proofreader is responsible for reading copy to ensure proper spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Proofreaders may be tasked with additional responsibilities. Some proofreaders are required to simply proofread the text to ensure every word is spelled correctly and used in its proper context, while others are asked to compare the text to the source and make sure previous edits were implemented.
Proofreaders will either mark up content identifying where corrections need to be made for another party to make the changes or make the corrections themselves. In either case, a freelance proofreader manages these tasks for their clients on a per-project basis or on an ongoing basis across multiple projects. Typical projects a freelance proofreader might work on include proofing/copy editing social media profiles and posts, proofreading for bloggers, or freelancing for a proofreading business.
What proofreading skills do I need?
Common skills a freelance proofreader should possess include:
- Familiarity with basic and advanced grammar rules
- Understanding of how language is to be used in accordance with specific style guides, such as Chicago Manual of Style, Associated Press, and APA
- Proficiency in identifying errors in spelling, punctuation, and formatting
- Ability to communicate effectively with writers and related staff
