Creative Writer and Copyeditor

"If any of you have a chance to work with Phoebe Journal & Andrew Cartwright, DO IT! Great dialogue" - KF (2018 Phoebe Nonfiction Contest winner) Over the past ten years, I have been the senior nonfiction editor for two national literary journals, Indiana Review and Phoebe. I have loved working closely with both emerging and established writers at every step of the lit mag publication process, including copyediting/revision and proofreading for both print and online publication. I also have three years of experience tutoring graduate and undergraduate writers in a university writing center setting; in that time, I have helped diverse writers from a variety of disciplines in all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming and drafting to revision and editing. My editing style is very writer-focused, meaning that, no matter my edits or suggestions, one of my main goals is always to retain the writer's unique tone and voice. Similarly, I will primarily focus on the writer's particular requests and needs for their manuscript, but I will also make proactive suggestions and ask questions that arise as I read. I am adept at all levels of editing, from larger-scale issues to small details on the line/word level, and I will suit my focus to the needs of your particular work in all of its complexity. I have experience within multiple writing style guides, including Chicago, MLA, and APA. I am proficient in the Microsoft Office suite and in editing through Word using "Track changes." As a writer myself, I respect the amount of time and energy (and soul) that writers put into their work, and I always aim to be both thorough and efficient with my notes and other feedback. My training has mostly been focused on academic writing and creative nonfiction, especially memoir and personal essay, but I also have experience working with fiction writers and poets and love reading and writing in both genres whenever I have the opportunity. I read a good deal of contemporary work in all genres to remain familiar with publishing trends, and I have a strong knowledge of current literary magazines and small presses. Whatever the project, I am always available for communication and will keep in contact with the writers about progress, expectations, and goals. I am passionate about making great writing even greater. My practice is inclusive and I would love to work with all types of writers.
