Senior Consultant and Editor

I use the skills I developed in a 40 year academic career in a number of ways. First, I work with masters and doctoral students who need help with organizing, editing, proofing and formatting their theses and dissertations. Second, I especially enjoy doing literature searches and reviews for folks who need background information for their writing projects. Third, I also assist nonprofits that need help with grant writing, program planning or program evaluation. My background prepared me for this type of work. I had careers as a journalist, special events director for a national retail chain, nonprofit administrator, university social work professor (all three ranks), Director of the Iowa School of Social Work (16 years) and, finally, as Dean of the Graduate School of Social Work, University of Denver (11 years). These jobs afforded me the opportunity to develop many skills, among them: Writing--published 4 books, 10 chapters and over 40 academic journal articles (peer reviewed). Consulting--worked with human service nonprofits, public health government agencies and other organizations to solve problems, create interagency agreements and networks, and develop effective management policies and protocols. Grant Writing--accumulated value of lifetime awards exceed $20 million in wide range of areas including welfare reform, public health, at-risk children and families, welfare (food stamps, family stability, etc.), self-employment and micro-enterprise development, mental health, domestic violence, legal services and capital campaigns. Program Evaluation--completed program evaluations for 24 multi-year evaluations. Teaching--taught wide range of courses in urban planning, research methods, program evaluation and administration including financial management, personnel management, strategic and community planning, bench-marking and outcomes assessment, and information systems. External Examiner--served on master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation committees at the Universities of Iowa, Maryland, Denver and Smith College. Editorial Board Member, Consulting Editor, and Reviewer for nine academic journals. Outside Reviewer for tenure, retention and promotion committees at six universities including the Universities of Chicago, Connecticut, Missouri, Utah and Case Western. Editorial Writer for several newspapers. Expert Witness in numerous child abuse and neglect court cases. Consulting with start-up nonprofits to develop their initial program plan (logic model) and prepare IRS application for nonprofit status.
