I am an experienced and highly conceptual qualitative researcher and expert Grounded Theorist keen to collaborate on market/social research/UX or evaluation projects in a team or work as a solo researcher. I am currently working on the application of grounded theory as a method for qualitative analysis of multiple forms of data in evaluation.
RECENT PROJECTS
(i) EVALUATION: I worked remotely on 4 mixed method product evaluations for global company Johnson & Johnson’s Health and Wellness Solutions .
Projects 1 & 2: required qualitative evaluation of 2 different courses designed to facilitate long term behaviour change in participants. For project 1 a traditional thematic analysis produced useful insights, which were further developed in the second project. Project 2 used the grounded theory research method to collect and analyse interview data and course documents. An elegant theory was developed, which explains the process of successful (and less successful) behaviour change, as well as identifying recommendations for course design (Mason et al, 2019).
Projects 3 & 4: required qualitative evaluation of a health and wellness app and its platform from the perspectives of app users and the platform users. I contributed to the qualitative sections of the research protocols and the submissions for ethical review and collected and analysed interview data from a vulnerable population with regard to a sensitive topic. Understanding the main concern of patients and how they processed that concern showed that the app connected directly into a basic human need and that correspondingly, the ideas and content in app has direct relevance for app users. Applying the theory to different types of health care processes indicates those markets where the app may have the greatest opportunity. Useful insights emerged from the work with platform users.
(ii) EVIDENCE REVIEW: A rapid evidence assessment was carried out of successful strategies used to prevent harms arising/escalating from behavioural disorders and substance misuse. The strategies were assessed for transferability to the gambling sector and recommendations for strategic and operational level interventions were made (Scott, 2020 in preparation).
EXPERIENCE
(i) EXPERT PRACTITIONER of the exploratory research method grounded theory (GT) and trained by the method’s co-originator, Barney Glaser, with extensive experience of working in collaboration and as a solo researcher. Highly skilled in the collection and analysis of many types of qualitative (and some quantitative) data, collected remotely and face to face.
Substantive areas explored include: adult online learning; education in the creative industries; group work in computing; a health and wellness app and its platform; wellbeing short courses (behaviour change); dying in the 21st century; poverty in Greenland.
Fellow of the Grounded Theory Institute. Peer reviewer of The Grounded Theory Review.
(ii) AUTHOR of multiple articles addressing theoretical and practical aspects of GT; contributor to a methodological reader of exemplary grounded theories and a collection of papers; contributor to a GT anthology (see sample of published works below).
(iii) RESEARCH MENTOR to PhD students and professional researchers worldwide, I offer support for the entire research process: I review and make recommendations on research design, advise on data collection techniques, support and model the analytic process and review and examine dissertations/theses in a way designed to enthuse and encourage mentees. I also examine PhD candidates.
Substantive areas/populations explored with mentees: Somali refugees; Indian residential school survivors; transnational politics; billion dollar fast track projects; agricultural workers in Tanzania; recruitment for clinical trials in France; female prisoners in the USA. and many others including various therapeutic relationships and areas of nursing.
(v) CONSULTANT INFORMATION ARCHITECT AND CONTENT CREATOR for Syngenta Crop Protection AG. I conceived, nurtured and promoted a stewardship concept through to production as an information website: extracting the knowledge from experts, untangling the threads of process and organising and chunking information for web presentation. This entirely practical website - pesticidewise - offers content through text, video, sketches, online tools and calculators and, underpinned by educational theory, is designed to present highly technical matters in an clear, usable format to a wide range of users across the world in many languages. (2011 - 2016).
Web Editor for the StewardshipCommunity website (April 2009 to December 2013).
Built: (i) Groundedtheoryonline website writing the content and providing the images; (ii) GramaphoneGuru website providing the images and producing many of the videos; (iii) Sheepscombe Byre website writing the content and providing many of the images.
I'm flexible and keen to hear from you. Rate can vary.
