I am a politics and civil litigation reporter with experience writing in multiple formats including print, digital, long and short form, technical and creative writing. I have a variety of work experience ranging from customer service to communications writing for state agencies. I have excellent experience in the automotive field, manufacturing and technology, and writing for not-for-profit organizations. I received my education through a unique program offered by California State University, Sacramento, where I studied journalism and government. I was trained in all forms of journalism and creative writing. My writing style is flexible and adaptable to my customers desires. The vast amount of work I have done follows AP Style closely. This includes hundreds of articles on complex legislative or litigation based off public record that I write for a general audience. I have done quite a bit of technical writing, such as creating product descriptions for websites using SEO techniques and have experience creating brand messaging and developing communication strategies using print and social media. I have even written cooking blogs and have experience with photojournalism. The skill I possess that makes me a good writer is my ability to research topics quickly and efficiently, identify stakeholders and develop written pieces tailored to the relevant interests. I strive for factual, accurate and correct writing and hold my work to a very high standard. I will not write something that cannot be verified, unless I am writing an opinion piece. Today's journalists often lack the skills to write non-biased articles that are factually accurate, free of opinion and interesting to read. These are skills that were hammered home through my education. Beyond my writing skills, I have worked as a mechanic, manufacturing, database input, customer service and even as a chauffeur. My interests are broad. In my free time, I enjoy restoring classic cars, gardening, cooking and working with my dogs. I spend a lot of time outdoors and always take an opportunity to get outside. I hike, sail and ride skateboards. I am as happy in the desert as at the beach or in the mountains.

"I think our project was more technical than Derek is used to. The process to get to an acceptable final product was painful and much more drawn-out than with other writers we've hired. Throughout the process, his attitude remained positive and he was willing to keep working on it, but unfortunately, his writing skills and ability to adapt to our template/procedures/style didn't meet our expectations for this project."
