I love the word craft: the harnessing of dedication, imagination, and desire to skill to make something that works. It’s a hopeful word. And it’s true — with patience and attention everything can be improved. Whether I’m writing, editing, teaching English, or instructing taijiquan, the belief that everything can be better is my touchstone. Writing well requires careful practice to not just putting the best words in the best order, but keeping the goals of the project first in your mind. Whether writing for myself or in collaboration with others, I know that the best work comes by doing it. It’s just an idea till it’s on the page. But then it can become an elegant tool for bringing those ideas to life. Teaching English online for a decade taught me to nurture ideas to fruition. My students were professionals: firefighters, teachers, and entrepreneurs — they needed theories that worked in practice. Listening to their needs and putting their goals first helped me help them. Understanding the purpose of a project guides my editing practice as well. An editor should hear you. I repeat: an editor should hear you, and help you find the ways to let other people do the same. Because your work has potential. And that’s what craft is all about: seeing potential and bringing it out. Coaching people to find their own way in taijiquan is delightful, because the practice is about realizing intrinsic excellence. In the end, bringing out the best in people is what I do best.

Testimonials

Endorsements from past clients

"I hired Brian to edit my novel The Trench Angel (Leapfrog Press, 2015) before it went out to publishers. Brian gave cogent advice about the book's organization, theme, and voice, while do a spectacular job on the line level. He gave critiques kindly but also firmly. He was worth every penny. "

"I hired Brian to write for our project. With only a limited description of what we wanted to say, he quickly wrote copy that greatly exceeded our expectations. More than simply delivering publication-ready drafts ahead of schedule, he took the time to understand what we were doing and used his prose to push our project forward in ways we'd never have thought of doing without him. The next time I need writing done, I'm hiring him again."
