My name is Michael Sewa, I am a graduate of the City University of New York Queen’s College with a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. My collegiate career started with a degree in business administration, and I quickly learned that my passions were in creating a healthier world for communities similar to my family. With my ethnicity of Guyanese and Taiwanese, I’ve been taught that food is an adhesive that holds people together. Proper nutrition has a direct correlation to proper environmental conditions for harvesting nutrition, and because of this, maintaining the health of our environment is way to bring health to people. To address this aspect, I have included environmental experiences to enhance my dietetic practice which include green infrastructure, sustainable food systems, sustainable farming, composting, urban agriculture, and closed-loop systems. My efforts are concentrated in the prosperity of human health, but I also understand that the environment where we attain our nutrition is just as important to maintain. Since entering the work world, I have maintained positions focused in nutrition education, sustainability, and urban agriculture. These experiences stemmed from my work as an intern for the NYC Parks Department where I’ve constructed green roof infrastructure throughout the city of New York. My time with the Parks has led me to start my professional career as the manager of their green roof garden where the harvest was donated to local food pantries of Harlem, New York. This work has expanded to food insecurity work throughout NYC with Brighter Bites and in Oahu, Hawaii with GROW externships, and as a community nutrition educator with Cornell’s Cooperative Extension. I am confident in my work ethic, and my motivations to be an effective asset to your workforce. I am looking now to find a new position working to expand my goals to serve underrepresented communities. My passion is valuable to any team working to serve underrepresented communities and I am confident in my ability to fill your position.
