I just launched my services on Upwork, and have been very fortunate so far. I absolutely love working on this platform. It has been extremely rewarding. WHO AM !? I'm a wildly creative writer/editor, molded by my professional training as a licensed attorney and twenty years in the film industry. Whether you need original, impeccably-written marketing material, or a nuanced polish of an academic submission, I'm your go-to resource for flawless execution. CANDOR -- If I can't help you, I'll do my best to put you in touch with the right resource. You shouldn't be left to twist in the wind. INTEGRITY -- It only takes one bad review to destroy a hard-earned reputation. In view of this, I always give it my all. As Winston Churchill said, "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat."Academic Editing

I provide editing services from proofreading, copy editing, and line editing to developmental editing and indexing of academic, nonfiction, financial, tax, and legal projects. I also record for Radio Talking Books and record audiobooks for Audible and Librivox. Since 2020 I have edited more than a dozen nonfiction books, three book-length dissertations, more than 50 academic journal articles, numerous master’s theses and other shorter works, and several white papers. As a retired attorney, judge, and business school professor, I've applied my expertise to subjects ranging from an analysis of the UK's system of dual-class shares, to whether the legal definition of genocide should encompass political grounds, to the environmental aspects of fast fashion, and everything in between. I recently edited and indexed a book on the unique problems of employing those with criminal histories, which was published in 2024 by Springer Nature. I have also edited nearly a dozen travel and how-to books for CZYK Publishing, an independent publisher in the United States. I have extensive experience, and particular expertise, in working with clients for whom English is a second (or third) language. I edit in MS Word and return for each project a redline with my suggested edits and explanatory comments and, when appropriate, a clean copy ready for use. I have also edited in Google Docs and in Adobe. I have certificates in editing from the University of Washington and from the University of Chicago, a doctorate in accounting/business/economics from the University of Minnesota, and a law degree from the University of Michigan. I would love to speak with you about how I can help you make your writing clear, concise, and compelling. As a first step, let's schedule an interview to discuss your project!Academic Editing

Hello potential client: I am a versatile freelancer with over twenty years of academic research, writing, and editing experience. My work has been published in academic journals and books, as well as more popular magazines. I pride myself in providing quality work – no matter the job – to all of my clients. My background as a teacher at the university level has given me a unique perspective to examine academic writing, which will be beneficial to you as a client. I earned a PhD in history from the University of Memphis (2012), writing my dissertation on dynastic change in Late Period ancient Egypt (728-331 BC). I also have a MA from the University of Memphis in ancient Egyptian art history, and a BA in history from Minnesota State, Mankato. Although my historical passion is in the ancient world, I have studied nearly every period of human history. As a historical expert, I will provide you with key insight and research into whatever topic assigned, accessing a variety of source materials to complete the project. Due to my background in ancient Egyptian history, I have extensively utilized a number of languages, modern and ancient, in my research and writing. During graduate school, I took four years of formal coursework in ancient Egyptian languages, focusing primarily on the Middle Egyptian form of the language, but am also familiar with the Late Egyptian form and have an elementary understanding of Coptic. This knowledge can be utilized by you the client in a number of ways, from course preparation to original research. My knowledge of ancient Egyptian can also be used in some more “creative” ways, including writing modern names, jokes, and any number of fun things one can think of to write Egyptian. I can also read modern German, French, and Spanish, which is useful to keep abreast of recent academic work from around the world in a given field. My experience in academia, and now on this platform, has allowed me the chance to edit and proof-read hundreds of term papers, theses, dissertations, book chapters, and journal articles. As a former student, I know how important it is to produce a well-written paper to not only get a good grade in your class, but also to use that paper as a springboard to further your academic career. Since I am currently a writer and researcher, I also know how important it is to keep your name in the field by producing work that is publishable in peer reviewed publications. I have been through the process and know what those publications expect from their writers. Although my background is in history, I have helped edit and proof-read papers from scores of different backgrounds – from computer science to biology and from economics to anthropology. Over the course of teaching for ten years at the university level, I acquired experience in a number of areas that you can utilize. I have extensive experience grading papers and using rubrics, writing course material, and creating my own lectures using Microsoft PowerPoint. I have also studied various pedagogical theories and practices. My teaching experience also gave me the opportunity to become a better public speaker. I have given hundreds of hours of lectures in the classroom and have presented my research at regional, national, and international academic conferences. This experience, along with helping a number of clients on this platform craft speeches, has allowed me to become a top tier speech writer. I have written and edited speeches for awards ceremonies, business presentations, and academic forums, demonstrating that my abilities are varied and diverse. Finally, once I have helped you put together an award winning paper or presentation, I will help you create or edit an excellent letter and resume/CV to go with it. I will help you write an application letter that will help you land that assistantship or fellowship, and I can also help you with cover letters when it is time to start job hunting. I look forward to hearing from you!Academic Editing

Since retiring from academia, I have been working with Ph.D. students and faculty members to help them achieve their writing goals by serving as a native-English editor, mentor, and tutor. I have assisted them with their thesis and/or efforts to publish their manuscripts. I am Professor Emeritus at Purdue University and have a Ph.D. in business from the University of Minnesota with 40+ years of experience in researching, writing, editing, and publishing work in business-related and other social science-related disciplines (e.g., marketing, management, MIS, accounting, industrial/organizational psychology, health administration). My clients--who are in both the social and hard sciences--have been faculty members, as well as Ph.D. and master's students, from the U.S. and Europe, as well as from such countries as Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, China, India, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Egypt, Nigeria, Iraq, and Iran. Accordingly, I have an extensive background editing work from both native-English and non-native-English language writers. In addition, I have chaired or been a member of Ph.D. and master's students thesis committees, assisting students in all aspects of their thesis research--including editing the final product and getting it published in SCI journals. Having published over 200 peer-reviewed SCI journal articles, my work has appeared in Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Retailing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Academy of Management Journal, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of International Business Studies, Leadership Quarterly, Human Relations, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and Sloan Management Review, among others. One co-authored article that appeared in the Journal of Marketing was voted by the AMA Sales SIG as one of the top ten most influential articles in the selling and sales management literature in the 20th century. Also, I am a former editor of a journal, have served on several editorial review boards, and have co-authored three books. I have extensive experience assisting others in researching, writing, editing, and revising their work. I have been a research and publishing mentor for numerous graduate-level students and faculty members; indeed, mentoring is something I truly enjoy and at which I have been successful. When mentoring, I treat mentees as peers, not subordinates. Most recently my freelancer role has been to help clients (1) conceptualize their research idea clearly and to provide adequate conceptual support for it, (2) identify the idea's importance vis-à-vis academics and practitioners, and (3) define the key purpose of their work, as well as (4) closely scrutinize their manuscript as would a journal editor and/or reviewer (e.g., noting weaknesses, gaps, lack of clarity) and (5) edit their manuscript to correct writing errors and enhance lucidity. Admittedly, most editors do superlative work. What distinguishes me from many editors, however, are the following characteristics: numerous publications of academic work in SCI journals, keen familiarity and experience with the thesis-writing and academic-publishing processes, co-authorships with colleagues from various disciplines in the social sciences, acute knowledge of requisite jargon for academic publishing, extensive experience in mentoring graduate students and faculty, and a deeply-felt obligation to assist the next generation of Ph.D.'s for success. Whether you are a master's or Ph.D. student, a faculty member, or a professional researcher desiring research, writing, and/or editing assistance, I will be delighted to work with you--regardless of your fluency in English. My hourly rate is negotiable, and a lump-sum fee per project is negotiable as well. Please allow me to offer one explanatory paragraph about my current efforts on Upwork. Because I have a bevy of private clients now, I rarely check Upwork for jobs any longer. I tend to do so when I am in between projects. If you read reviews from my former Upwork clients, though, you will see that I have provided an extremely high level of service to them. Thank you.Academic Editing

Clients value my command of the English language, meticulous editing style, prompt communication, and professionalism. I will give your project the care it deserves and return a polished final product in a timely manner. My biggest strength is having a keen eye for detail while keeping the big picture in mind, and I excel in delivering a clear and concise document that is free of errors. The main issue I come across is lack of consistency. To make a great impression and communicate effectively, I believe that writers should strive to be consistent with terminology, organization, style, and formatting. I ensure that writers attain this goal. I have a knack for working with English Language Learners and convey their messages with a natural flow and impeccable grammar. In addition to freelance editing, I have also worked as a writing consultant in both a university writing center and law school. My role was centered around discerning clients' strengths/weaknesses and improving their grammar, clarity, flow, organization, and content. I have a liberal arts undergraduate education and a science/engineering graduate education. Before graduate school, I worked in research and development at 3M and Ecolab. Because of my education and industry experience, I am sought out for technical/business writing. However, I am proficient in a variety of writing styles. I also have extensive experience with academic writing and enjoy writing travel guides and poetry.Academic Editing

I have a strong ability to craft stories, a drive to learn continuously, and a genuine kindness. See more at brendonhertz.com. My experience as a writer and editor is bookended by what I’ve learned over a half decade as a public high school English teacher and nearly four years spent as a contractor for Microsoft and Meta. In between, I spent some time working for a Seattle-based charcuterie company. There, I gained insight into what it takes to build a successful small business while pursuing further education and experience in my field. At Microsoft, I joined the Microsoft Research Digital Engagement team as a content writer and eventually became lead editor. When I joined the team, I was one of two writers that helped to develop a style guide for the organization, write digital content with a focus on helping researchers craft blog posts, and develop a consistent voice for the brand across social media and other external content channels. As the success of the team lead to its growth, I had the opportunity to craft and shape written content for webinars, virtual events, short-form and long-form videos, keynote speeches, and other highly technical content. I also produced podcast episodes. Along the way, I was lucky to work with some of the world’s leading technology researchers and help to inform content for executives at the highest levels of the company. As lead editor, I managed a storytelling calendar and helped to facilitate content creation with a team of writers, graphic designers, an audio/video production crew, and a podcasting agency. In July of 2022, I joined Meta Open Source to build and refine its storytelling engine. In my six months there, I made immediate impact by honing blog posts, social media, videos, and other promotional content while implementing new processes to make the editorial process more robust. My time at Meta taught me how to adapt my versatile skillset to a new organization and work environment. Some of my favorite topics include AI, future of work, quantum computing, and privacy and security.Academic Editing
