Hi, I'm Cara! I'm a developmental fiction editor. I love working with authors and creative people! I have a decade of experience providing developmental editing. I am happy to edit any length of story. I am a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and strive to uphold their standards of professionalism and integrity. ----- How does developmental editing differ from copyediting? Developmental (sometimes called substantive) editing doesn't focus on correcting grammar errors, but rather takes a deep look into the story itself. A developmental editor checks for story flow, effectiveness, point of view, passive language, consistency, and areas where your story can be expanded on or polished so that it stays in the minds and hearts of readers. A copyeditor corrects technical details of a manuscript's writing content, such as grammar and spelling. These edits ensure your manuscript is ready for publishing or to send to an agent. Unlike developmental edits, story/plot content is not typically addressed during a copyedit. ----- Which type of editing do you need? Your book or story may require one more than the other, depending on myriad factors. Many stories require both services. If you're curious about the types of editing I offer and which might best serve your needs, please reach out to me!Chicago Manual of StyleCopy EditingFictionProofreadingFantasyDevelopmental EditingBook EditingScience FictionRomanceLiteratureWriting Critique - $30 hourly

Returning to Upwork after not using it as a work platform for ages! Storytelling has been my passion since I was a child. As I grew older, that passion shifted into a love of theatre, which led to being a theatre major in college. It was around that time I also discovered a passion for writing--one that would surpass my love of theatre over the next few years, though I didn't know it at the time. (Ah, hindsight. What do you do?) I can find something to love in most any genre of fiction. But more than anything, I've fallen in love with Fantasy and Sci-Fi. The ability to stretch the reader's imagination, to pull them out of the real world and into someplace unbelievable yet somehow familiar... there's simply nothing like it. We read books to escape, yes, but we also read them to find a piece of ourselves. To meet characters we relate to and want to root for. To experience the fantastic. Authors that can do that are wizards, which would make editors something like a magician's assistant. And that's pretty darn cool. Now, I could give you more backstory on all the education I've gotten and how I use that to help authors take their books to its fullest potential. I could talk about my attention to detail and keen eye for readability and flow. I could talk about my deep understanding of characterization and story progression. And all of it would be true. But it would also be a bit boring. You're here to write a book, not read one, am I right? Plus, frankly, every editor is going to say something along those lines. So, instead, I'll talk about my primary goal for the editing process: fun. Aside from the obvious (error correction, readability, story improvement, etc.), the main thing I want is to make the editing process an enjoyable experience. Listen, sending your book to an editor can be stressful--even downright scary. "What if they don't like it?" "What if it's bad?" "What if it's riddled with errors?" Not to mention the fact that I'm technically a stranger on the internet. Believe me, I understand the anxiety, and it's totally justified. So I seek to ease those worries. I make jokes, use silly metaphors, and keep my feedback constructive. I try to make my clients laugh (yes, even if your genre is drama or something). Even if I'm providing you with great edits or suggestions, I've only done half my job if you're not having fun with it. You should be looking forward to getting the manuscript back, not dreading it. You're creating something great; you deserve to enjoy it. Anyway, that's enough rambling from me. I know I'd be a great editor for you. Let's get to telling your story the way it deserves to be told. Oh, and here are a few reviews from previous clients, so you don't have to just take my word for it: "There’s a ton of editors out there, but I’m really glad I went with Alex! Not only are his editing skills great, but what I liked the most is that we was accessible and more than willing to go that extra mile with me . . . Would definitely recommend him to anyone who needs a super “user friendly” editor!" “I can't recommend Alex's copy editing highly enough. He's thoughtful about his suggestions, exacting in his word choice and provides an exceptional level of polish to the finished product. If you need any type of copy editing services he is the perfect person for the job.” “Alex is a total rockstar and hiring him was the best thing I could’ve done! He was amazingly easy to work with, fantastic communication and really knows what he is doing! Thank you Alex, truly!”Chicago Manual of StyleProofreadingEditing & ProofreadingStorytellingWritingWriting CritiqueScrivenerBook WritingAdobe InDesignStory EditingDevelopmental EditingMicrosoft OfficeBook EditingEnglishStory Development - $20 hourly
