"Though I am sure she is bus[y] and in demand, she never made me feel like I couldn't reach out to her for help. I would recommend her to everyone and give her a 1,000 star rating!" "She is both professional, with a very strong work ethic; and oh so pleasant, with a very caring attitude. Where I stumbled in my writing, she cleared it up." She made making the writer-editor relationship very easy and she was so welcoming." "If you are looking for an editor that will do a professional edit along with educating you to become a better writer, then hire Jessica! She helped me with my writing along with building up my confidence." I am a highly skilled editor with over fifteen years of experience. I am extremely professional, efficient, and thorough. Let me help you get to the next step of publishing your book or polish your professional documents for social media! I am a multi-genre editor with over eight years of experience as well as a published author of children’s books and full-length fiction. As an editor, I work with authors and professionals to improve the quality of their written work, such as books, blogs and website content. I will edit and proofread for punctuation, grammar, word usage, spelling, clarity, flow, and continuity. In each sentence, I examine the topic, writing style, and language used, as well as the paragraph style. My experience includes over six years of editing children’s picture books and chapter books, full-length fiction and non-fiction, and poetry. I’ve edited romance, mystery, fantasy, historical, erotica, self-help, and Christian. A Few Testimonies (from Get It Write): “Melanie went ABOVE AND BEYOND my expectations. When I began, I had zero idea what to do (my first book!). Melanie walked me through everything! She was so helpful and easy to ask anything! My book would not have been the same without Melanie. I will 100% use Melanie again. I couldn’t imagine using any other editor!” (editing, formatting, self-publishing a children’s book) “I spent $1300 at another editing service to get my book edited. It’s safe to say that my money was wasted. Melanie Lopata went above and beyond for a fraction of the cost. I HIGHLY recommend Melanie and her editing services! She takes the time to actually read your manuscript and it definitely showed.” (editing, formatting full-length children’s chapter book)Chicago Manual of Style

Hello, I'm Chris! I'm a freelance editor and published writer based in Brooklyn. My goal as an editor is to ensure your writing is free of errors, flows organically, and communicates your intended message as effectively as possible. I will thoroughly proofread and edit your book (nonfiction or fiction), technical document, textbook, article, web copy, ad copy, and almost any other content you need. I edit for grammatical and typographical errors (spelling, punctuation, usage), syntax issues, and overall structure and readability. I have worked on the editorial team of BetterHelp, a large mental health provider, drafted and proofread contracts/technical documents at a Fortune 1000 company, and worked freelance, editing books, technical papers, articles, and even restaurant menus. Both law and business school instilled in me a respect for thorough research and fact-checking, and I am adept at finding and correcting subtle errors. I always try to make unobtrusive edits to ensure your voice and tone come through — and I genuinely enjoy the challenge of creating and editing engaging, beautiful writing.Chicago Manual of Style

I am a freelance proofreader/copyeditor who loves clean copy and good prose. Every writer has their own way of telling a story. I strongly believe that a writer's voice needs to be preserved in their work. I'm just here to fix up the little things. My debut novel, NICE GIRLS, was published in September 2021. It was recommended by Entertainment Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar, New York Post, and The New York Times Book Review. In 2017, I placed in the Top 10% of the Academy Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting competition. Prior to this, I worked as a legal assistant and served as an editor for Cold Tea Collective, an online millennial news group. I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota with a BA in English and minors in Creative Writing and Asian American Studies. I also served as an editor in chief of the school's arts and literary magazine, The Tower.Chicago Manual of Style

I want to use this section not just to assert that I am good at what I do; let me tell you why. With a profile on Upwork devoted to proofreading services, it’d be weird if I didn’t love the English language. Beyond that, I’m an avid reader with plenty of experience finding errors in books and articles I read every day, including papers from my friends and family. Even big news outlets carry pretty frequent grammar errors. Not everyone has the time or patience to sift through their work all day. Plus, it’s better to get a fresh pair of eyes on your writing because you’re prone to missing slip-ups in something you wrote yourself. That’s why this niche exists. If you want a little history, I was instilled with a love for language at a young age. That love continued into schooling, where I was always considered an "English student." Later on, I took advanced English courses specifically because reading and language mechanics interested me so much (also, just between us, math is NOT my strong suit). Presently, I’m studying for my bachelor's degree in English after recently passing the milestone for an associate’s. To recap, my understanding of the English language is fueled by over a decade of proactive learning, and I love searching for errors so much that it's practically an instinct. That passion is the centerpiece and what I’m most proud of. I can say confidently that I’m excited to work with you and help your project flourish.Chicago Manual of Style

I would love to help you elevate your writing or polish it for publication! I have years of professional experience as an editor, specializing in line editing and proofreading. I have a deep understanding of English grammar and writing mechanics, as well as an eye for tone, style, and audience. I can adapt my editing (and, in turn, your writing) for any genre or occasion. I am collaborative and responsive, ensuring that my work is appropriate for your goals. My professional experience includes editing informational texts, short-form and novel-length fiction, writing/editing technical documentation, writing web copy, and teaching (English 7-12). I'm also a member of ACES: The Society for Editing. I will proofread, copy edit, or line edit your writing to eliminate errors and bring it to the next level. I can work with any genre, format, and purpose: • Proofreading: Editing for errors. E.g., typos, run-on sentences, formatting, stylistic consistency. This is best reserved for a text that is finished and just needs to be "polished" to avoid embarrassing errors. • Copy editing: Proofreading + minor language adjustments. I help you tweak your grammar and language use, and I make sure your writing has no silly mistakes (e.g., inconsistencies or copyright infringement). • Line editing: Nitty-gritty writing specifics. I will not only correct errors and help you maintain a consistent style, but also include suggestions for the strength of your writing on multiple levels. This includes sentence structure, word choice, clarity of ideas, tone, and pacing. ^^^ Line editing is the way to go if you want an in-depth, critical overhaul of your prose. These are the sorts of revisions that take a rough draft to the next level. ** Genre and format: The strength of your writing depends heavily on how it's catered to its audience, occasion, and purpose. A novel, for instance, requires a vastly different writing style (and therefore editing approach) than a technical manual. And within those formats lies a spectrum of genres and topics. Here are some of the writing media and genres in which I have professional editing experience, and can guarantee that my feedback will complement the project's nuances: - Novel and fiction (specializing in fantasy, sci-fi, thriller, mystery, and literary fiction) - Memoir (specializing in education and pedagogy) - Technical writing (specializing in SaaS and cloud computing) - Copywriting (specializing in personal practice, blogs, and non-profits) - Academic writing - Research papers and reports - SEO content and social media If these fields seem disparate, that's because they are! I have a wealth of experience across writing and editing jobs, ranging from freelancing to contractual and full-time salaried positions. If you aren't sure whether your project is in my wheelhouse, please ask -- I will give a candid assessment of how my skills and experience align (or not) with your goals. I know that the type of writing and level of editing needed are highly individualized, so don't hesitate to reach out with a custom request. I am responsive, will communicate with you throughout the process, have great attention to detail, and will work within an agreed-upon time frame. I'm confident I can meet your needs with an appropriate level of editing at a reasonable rate.Chicago Manual of Style

An experienced proofreader and copyeditor, I have worked on manuscripts for adult and children's books, essays, corporate documents, transcripts, brochures, and catalog copy for more than a decade. Clients include ITNA Press, writers Travis Jeppesen and Bruce Benderson, Salon No. 15, Diamond Court Reporting Agency, political activist Ann Jamison, and artist Scott Neary. I’m extremely familiar with "The Chicago Manual of Style" and "Words into Type" and can spot incorrect punctuation, typos, and misspelled words. A good sense of language helps me correct unintentional errors in grammar and usage, point out wordiness, and suggest revisions without ever losing the writer's voice. Additionally, I know how to create and/or follow a style guide to ensure a project meets the required standards. In addition to these activities, I am the author of four children’s books and have recently researched and written profiles for an online directory of New York City mayoral candidates. I also have experience writing for newspapers and magazines. If you have a minute, I’d love to chat about how I can help you.Chicago Manual of Style

As a copy editor, I think of myself as a mediator; people bring me their writing, and I help them express their point more effectively to their audience. I work to clarify the intent, context, and nuance of their words, in their own voice, in pursuit of our shared goal: that the audience will understand and be compelled. I hold a bachelor's degree in English from the University of California, Davis, with a minor in Professional Writing. I have 7 years' professional experience as a copy editor, with long-term roles in journalism, marketing, and education. I've worked on an enormous range of content types, including (but not limited to) news columns, comic strips, books, blog posts, sales presentations, business reports, video scripts, closed captions, and math textbooks. Whatever written medium you're working in, if it's in American English, I can probably help.Chicago Manual of Style
