My Design Portfolio: dropbox-dot-com/s/k3s4886w3vureof/_Portfolio-dot-pdf Anthony S. Deese, Ph.D., is a Professor and Department Chair for Electrical and Computer Engineering at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). He recently served as Visiting Professor for the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing, and Perception Laboratory (GRASP) at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), during his 2022 sabbatical. During that sabbatical, he began his current work on application of Knowledge-Based Ordinary Difference Equation (KNODE) Model-Predictive Control (MPC) to dynamic microgrid optimization. Currently, Professor Deese is Chairperson of the IEEE Power and Energy Society PEEC Student Meeting Activities Subcommittee, tasked with supervising graduate student participation at conferences like the IEEE PES General Meeting. He is also a program evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET). Professor Deese recently organized, marketed, and taught a one-week summer bootcamp on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for high school students; this camp attracted 35 participants in 2024 and brought in more than $70k to the institution. He also taught several courses on electrical system analysis and machine learning for high school students at the TUMO Center for Creative Technologies in Yerevan, Armenia. Professor Deese also maintained a successful YouTube Channel (@AnthonyDeesePhD) with 70+ videos on STEM topics as well as more than 65,857 views internationally. Professor Deese's most recent research is published in the IEEE Internet of Things Journal, IET Wireless Sensor Systems Journal, Proceedings of the IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster, Cloud, and Grid Computing, as well as IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. His primary areas of expertise include machine learning for engineering applications, the Internet of Things and wireless sensor systems, nonlinear system analysis including power grids, mobile and web software development, as well as custom hardware prototyping. Professor Deese is active as a technical consultant, helping entrepreneurs turn their ideas into a reality with more than 20 years of experience in analog and digital hardware design as well as web and mobile software development. 2. More Information Anthony S. Deese, Ph.D. Technical Consultant Email: Anthony.Deese@gmail.com Site: anthonydeese-dot-com/consulting 3. Primary Areas of Expertise I offer consulting in the following areas: - The Internet of Things and Wireless Sensors - Machine Learning, Neural Networks, and Artificial Intelligence - Nonlinear Analysis and Optimization Including Power Systems - Custom PCB Fabrication and HW Prototyping - Mobile and Web Software Development (including React Native) - Teaching and Higher-Education Related - Grant and Proposal Writing (e.g., National Science Foundation) - Technical Paper Editing (e.g., IEEE Transactions) - Advanced MATLAB Simulation Development 5. Recent Consulting Example From November 2019 to June 2021, I provided hardware and software design consulting services for The Calm Device Company; they sell a small electronic device that generates specific types of low-power vibrations. When applied to sensitive areas like the neck, these vibrations have been shown to provide a substantial calming effect. The Calm Device Company offers a potential solution for those with anxiety problems, which does not require any vitamins of pharmaceuticals. I designed the prototype shown on their website. - Hardware Development - I designed and tested the first version of the hardware sold to customers. This hardware consisted of an: 1) Arduino SoC, 2) Li-Polymer charge management controller, 3) class-D mono amplifier, 4) buck/boost converter, 5) lithium-ion battery, and 6) small transducer to generate vibrations. This hardware also provided Bluetooth connectivity for communication with the mobile application described below. - React Native Software Development - I designed and tested a mobile application that employs the React Native Development Framework to ensure compatibility with both AndroidOS and iOS devices. This application: 1) communicates with the hardware mentioned above via Bluetooth Low Energy to determine when the device is used, 2) uploads this information to a private database within Amazon Web Services' DynamoDB Service, 3) allows the user or health service provider to privately log in and review recent usage, as well as 4) allows the user to make private notes within their record relevant to how and why they activated The Calm Device. Figure 1 provides a screenshot from that application. This work generated several working devices that were sold to the public. My work on this project was completed in June 2021 because the company needed more extensive engineering staff services.Circuit DesignWeb ApplicationMobile App DevelopmentComputer EngineeringRaspberry Pi FirmwareMATLABSimulation SoftwareAndroid App DevelopmentSoftware DevelopmentReact NativeMachine LearningPower SystemWireless CommunicationInternet of ThingsPCB DesignMicrocontroller DesignArduino Firmware - $60 hourly
