I’m a detail-oriented perfectionist with a passion for language, which makes me the ideal copy editor or proofreader for your magazine/resume/website/pizza menu. I have a BFA in creative writing with a focus on poetry, so I know words matter, and whether I'm writing or editing, I bring that care and dedication to every project. Pro-oxford comma, but if that’s not your style we can still make it work! I’m flexible enough to have thrived in work environments as varied as a hotel kitchen and a theater tech booth, and while most of my editing experience is in Chicago Style, I’ve worked with a variety of style guides, and even created a house style guide for internal and audience-facing documents. I was raised in Scotland and now live in the United States; my fluency in both British and American English is an asset if you're working on both sides of the pond. I have four years of editing and proofreading experience, including literary magazines, interview transcripts, and image captions, and I'm comfortable working with Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite.Creative WritingCopy EditingGraphic DesignWritingMicrosoft OfficeGoogle WorkspaceProofreading - $32 hourly

Are you looking for a dedicated collaborative writer, coach, or ghostwriter who believes your story is your own and will provide you with a deep and enriching experience as well as a final written work you can put your name on? Are you interested in a professional cold call interviewer--someone who can seamlessly insert themselves into the story as interviewer--who believes the characters in your story reside within you, and our interviews are a means to releasing those characters from within you and freeing them to act from the page? I am a professional writer and creative currently pursuing a MicroMasters in Writing for Performance and the Entertainment Industries with the University of Cambridge. In a prior life I attended Music School for Voice during undergraduate studies and later studied privately with Noel George of the Detroit Metropolitan Opera. I excelled at the University of Michigan, earning a 3.5 GPA in graduate coursework. I wrote for academic publication, including biographical sketches for Gale Researche's Notable Native Americans, and Who's Who. I wrote for the publishing industry, including Publisher's Weekly, and Booklist, and did feature news articles on socially relevant contemporary issues as well as Op-Eds. I took time off from writing--a long time actually, twenty years to be exact, but don't let that get in the way of hiring me--to tend to my needs and raise a family. I am currently writing a memoir, seeking literary representation and I co-host a weekly RSS Feed podcast devoted to dissecting the writing of engaging story: Backstory Podcast. In another prior life I conceptualized, designed and wrote new forms of personal development curricula in the Arts. Utilizing my curricula as the centerpiece, one of my first proposals landed a coveted position with industry leader Steinberg as one of four training centers in North America. Prior to this, I was responsible for editing, proofreading, and content development for multiple Arts Studio projects related to commissions. With a background of education, early experience, and personal interest, I focus my interviewing for biographical and autobiographical projects. I work swiftly without sacrificing quality and am adept in several creative nonfiction subgenres. I'm a write-at-home Mom and an early riser with a penchant for the transformational qualities of the written word that I'd love to put towards projects like yours.Creative WritingDevelopmental EditingLiteratureHistoryCoachingCopywritingStory DevelopmentGhostwritingShort Story WritingBiography & MemoirCharacter DevelopmentCharacter DesignEditing & ProofreadingTopic ResearchEnglish - $40 hourly

As a professional creative writer, I understand that strong writing can take readers out of their tumultuous lives, give respite to weary, overstimulated minds, and invite them to process, and understand the mysteries of life through journeying along with resonant characters. The skills I possess include comprehension, organization, attention to detail, creativity, and focused follow-through. It’s important to me to produce the highest quality work. Therefore, my preference is to work with clients who seek excellence over abundance. The type of work I’m most interested in is storytelling. Whether it be flash fiction, short stories, novellas, or novels – I love bringing stories to life. I’m also interested in gaining more experience working on comics, animations, and scripts. My strengths lie in blending genres including horror, supernatural, thriller, dystopian, and exciting stories. I liken storytelling to musical compositions that play with space and time where the pace can nearly stop to strike a fatal chord or speed recklessly in a dizzying frenzy. My approach to storytelling is to follow the characters. To compose a good story is like excavating an archaeological site – it starts with a theory of the story and where it will go, but as you unearth details of the characters personalities, their motivations, associations, and as the world grows around key events – then the story becomes clear and impactful. Elements of stories that I’m not interested in writing (regardless of genre) encompass vivid gore, depravity, torture, sexual violence, the grotesque, and disgust. I’m not looking to write shocking things to jolt people. Each of the aforementioned topics, however, can be part of collaborated stories, not as the focal point, but as a device to express things such as horror. But I much prefer keeping these elements in the shadows akin to Hitchcock versus modern shock and awe. The collaboration process is simple. Communication must be clear and open. Ideas must flow freely. Constructive criticism must be expected and shared respectfully. My goal is to bring your story to life. My creativity and experience will organize the words for your approval. You always have free reign to rework parts of dialogue or sections to better reflect your vision. To that point, I cannot get into your head and see what you see – all I can do is interpret your notes. The last thing I’d like to speak to is pace and the time it takes to create. Most clients I’ve encountered (and passed on their stories) want the story written last week and have unrealistic expectations. As I said above, I’m looking to provide high quality, excellent work. Part of good story telling – really, the biggest part happens while processing. It’s like steeping tea, or (I’m told) aged wine. It’s always a shame to blast through something and wish it was different because it was rushed. If you’re still reading, then I think that shows a particular skill for keeping readers engaged. About me: My fascination with storytelling and conveying ideas has me consuming excessive amounts of varied media with great range. Anything from blockbuster to indie movies, classic novels to children’s books, to east and west philosophy, and copious amounts of documentaries. All this exposure to the human condition is what makes characters believable and atmospheres vivid. My first poems were published in an anthology when I was 17. At that age I also started playing in underground bands where by 18 we had a record deal with a record label based in Germany. I spent about 1997 to 2018 playing in bands, recorded over a dozen albums, toured the USA coast-to-coast a dozen times. Toured Canada and 9 countries in Europe. In 2014 I had a short story published in an anthology which caused me to begin to slow down with music and focus more on writing. In 2018 I was invited to share a short story at a live reading, which led to an invitation to share the same story on a radio show. Since 2022 I’ve published two short stories, a poem, and a novella. I also turned the novella into a radio play, which features myself as narrator, character actors reading dialogue, 88 sound effects, and I wrote seven instrumental songs that are set between the book’s chapters. I’ve performed the radio play live several times (Boston, Portsmouth, Portland among others) with illustrations projected, live readers, sound effects, and music. I’ve been hired also to write stories including a dystopian novel.Creative WritingProofreadingGeneral TranscriptionError DetectionEssay WritingEditing & ProofreadingGhostwritingShort Story WritingBook WritingFiction Writing - $19 hourly

I'm a graduate from Southern New Hampshire University where I obtained my BA in Creative Writing. I have experience writing structured formats as well as proofreading and editing. The love I developed at a young age for writing, as well as the art of effective and creative storytelling, has not diminished a fraction since that time. Since then, I have worked on several independent projects, where I was tasked to not only write material, but film it as well. Just recently, I worked with a group of Cambridge filmmakers in the 48-Hour Film Project which took place in Boston, Massachusetts for which I worked as the co-writer and assistant director. I have also been working on several passion projects of my own to further strengthen my writing and editing skills. I also have some experience in editing recorded footage for post-production using Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as the basic concept of composition, lighting, juxtaposition, and color theory to effectively tell a visual, and potentially powerful, story.Creative WritingStorytellingFinal DraftScreenwritingEditing & ProofreadingCommunication SkillsVideo EditingStory EditingMicrosoft ExcelMicrosoft PowerPointMicrosoft WordMicrosoft OutlookWritingStory ConceptScreenplay - $13 hourly
