Hi there! Thanks for taking a look at my profile. About Me: I am a writer and editor with extensive experience in the arts and culture nonprofit sector as well as in publishing. I’m also an author: the book I wrote, So You Want to Work in a Museum?, was published by Roman & Littlefield and the American Alliance of Museums in 2019; the book I edited, Creating Meaningful Museum Experiences for K-12 Audiences: How to Connect with Teachers and Engage Students, was published by Rowman & Littlefield and AAM in 2021. After more than two decades as a museum professional, while writing on the side, I devoted myself full time to freelancing in 2018. Now, I get to combine both aspects of my background into one meaningful practice: working with nonprofits to tell the story of the work that they do, with the ultimate goal of galvanizing support from their constituents. Similarly, I collaborate with artists to write about their work and articulate their vision for various audiences. I have a BA and MA in art history, from Harvard and the University of Pittsburgh, respectively. I also have a certificate in nonprofit management in leadership from the Institute for Nonprofit Practice at the Tisch School for Civic Life at Tufts University, and I teach a graduate museum studies course at Tufts. I live in Massachusetts. About My Work: I specialize in writing text that helps nonprofits explain their mission and how they carry it out. Depending on the organization and its needs, this can take a wide variety of forms, each with a different audience. Here’s just a sampling of the types of materials I’ve created: development pieces, including annual reports, appeal letters and membership materials; educational content, including lesson plans and teachers’ brochures; grants, including letters of inquiry, application narratives, and reports; and program descriptions, including as newsletters and website copy. I’ve worked with artists on projects including artist statements, grant and fellowship applications, website copy, gallery inquiries, and proposals. Regardless of the type of writing I'm working on, the process begins with establishing the audience, the main messages of the piece, and the call to action for the audience, whether you’re a nonprofit asking for donations to your organization or an artist looking for grant funding. It’s important that the text is straightforward and clear to readers who aren’t specialists in the field, that it explains how the project is relevant to the reader, and that it makes a compelling case for the value of the project. Also, it needs to showcase your/your organization's voice (not mine--essentially, I'm a ghostwriter). How I Can Help You: There are a number of ways that I, as a freelance writer, can be helpful to nonprofits and to artists who need to create a written piece like I’ve described above. First, I can provide objectivity and a fresh pair of eyes. You are immersed in your work; as an outsider, I can provide the context and perspective that can help channel your passion into clear, compelling text. I can ask the right questions, anticipate what readers want to know, avoid jargon, and otherwise make the piece accessible to the audience. Second, I have experience as the audience for the type of writing you may need: I’ve been a board member, a donor to and member of a number of nonprofits, a grant reviewer, an exhibition juror, and so on. This gives me an inside perspective on what the reader will want to see. For example, you might be surprised how many grant applicants don’t answer the exact question that’s being asked, or only answer part of it. If I’m working with a client on a grant application, I know to make certain that the answers are specific and that they completely answer the question. Third, I can save you a lot of time—something that is usually in short supply in the nonprofit sector and in the art world. The actual process will vary depending on your needs and what you’re starting with. You may have a solid first draft of a text, you may have an outline, or you may be starting from scratch. Regardless, once you hire me, I’ll do the writing, and then you’ll have a draft to respond to—I typically work with clients through Google Docs, a very efficient way to collaborate. One last note: because this type of writing for nonprofits and artists is collaborative, I find that a fixed price format tends to work better than hourly, and ends up being more cost-effective for the client. (An aside: my preference for fixed-price is the reason that Upwork states my hours worked as only 4; I've actually worked many, many hours!) I’d love to hear more about your project and how I can help you reach your goals. Thanks for considering me.Curriculum DevelopmentCreative WritingGrant WritingEditing & ProofreadingNonprofit OrganizationWritingBusiness WritingMuseum StudiesEssay WritingProofreadingCopywritingContent Writing - $68 hourly

New Englander with deep insights into secondary education and 21st-century pedagogy through more than a decade of classroom teaching and e-learning development. My teaching experience involved both a very successful urban high school in the U.S. and an international school in Southeast Asia. In addition to teaching history, including AP experience with high exam pass rates, I have piloted Edtech initiatives for a large school district, designed digital instructional material, led professional development, and worked with education companies both large and small. My university and graduate education involved substantial research and writing projects. From academic writing, articles, blogs, and other content to editing any material, I am a skillful and flexible writer. I immerse myself in topics, conducting the research necessary to write adeptly and with capability no matter the subject. In addition to using these skills professionally, I have volunteered time for English-language writing, editing, and teaching during visits abroad. I have an extensive background utilizing Learning Management Systems as an educator and have authored many courses on Canvas LMS by Instructure. I have designed and implemented programs for classroom use as well as remote, asynchronous, and hybrid combinations even before Covid-19. My practical background is an asset I bring to curriculum design and implementation. My experience on Upwork has encompassed traditional education and Edtech consulting and content writing, including projects on educator licensure test preparation, assessment design, and online Social Studies lessons. I have also worked on a project sourcing media clips for educational use, linking the clips to relevant curriculum standards, and crafting discussion questions tailored to each for use in the classroom. My clients have been happy to involve me in longer-term projects, and I pride myself on delivering results. You can hear me speak about my experiences as an educator in the interviews at the bottom of the page. Hi, nice to meet you! I have 7 years of experience teaching in writing and literature classes in higher education, and in turn, 7 years of experience working with writers to improve the quality of their writing and the clarity of their ideas, as well as 7 years of experience guiding students to sharpen their close reading and critical thinking skills. I have a keen eye for formatting, and I'm a stickler for enforcing style guidelines. My passion for nuance and close reading extends to a passion for essays and public-facing writing, including personal writing. Off of UpWork, I've proofread and copyedited technical articles, presentations, and even dissertations in humanities and STEM fields for diverse audiences and publications (general public, specialists, non-specialists; academic journals, magazines) In addition to copyediting and proofreading, I have experience crafting CVs and admissions materials for non-traditional learners, C-suite executive coaches applying to adjunct lecturer positions, and more. I have a PhD in Comparative Literature at Binghamton University (SUNY). My research interests include 20th century francophone literature, postcolonial studies, comparative feminist theories, deconstruction, psychoanalysis, and literatures of exile and migration. My dissertation, "'A Theater for Mute Women': Assia Djebar's Embodied and Embodying Feminism," examines practices of feminism articulated in Algerian author Assia Djebar's work in conversation with Julia Kristeva's concept of the chora as an embodying mechanism.Curriculum DevelopmentCVAcademic EditingResume WritingMicrosoft WordBlackboardHigher EducationCurriculum DesignAcademic WritingProofreadingAcademic Proofreading - $40 hourly
