With degrees in international affairs and Spanish, complemented by studies in creative writing, my professional path has been a blend of cultural exploration and storytelling. From teaching English in Spain, where I immersed myself daily in language and culture, to crafting evocative travel articles about Mallorca, I advocate for slow travel and deep cultural appreciation. Over the past five years as a freelance editor, specializing in memoirs, I am passionate about helping individuals articulate their stories with clarity and resonance. I believe in the power of storytelling to foster understanding and connection, making each narrative an engaging journey of discovery. My work is driven by the belief that sharing our stories bridges gaps and creates bonds that transcend borders. With five years of experience as a freelance editor, I have had the privilege of working on a diverse array of projects. My most notable titles include serving as the lead editor for "Love & Try" and editing "Losing My Power Forward: Rebounding Through Grief" by Regina Tisdale. I hold a Bachelor's of Liberal Arts in International Studies and Spanish and a minor in creative writing. A background in International Studies and Spanish equips me with cultural awareness, language proficiency, and strong research skills, enhancing my ability to edit content for diverse audiences. My studies fostered meticulous attention to detail, effective communication, and critical thinking, all crucial for high-quality editing. Additionally, my interdisciplinary knowledge and adaptability allow me to handle a wide variety of topics and formats with ease, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and cultural sensitivity in every project. My creative writing studies included extensive literature coursework and participation in numerous writing workshops. These experiences have sharpened my skills in providing efficient and constructive feedback, which I apply to every editing project I undertake. As an editor, I pride myself on my meticulous attention to detail, from catching misplaced commas to eliminating accidental double spaces. My background as a creative writer allows me to approach editing from the standpoint of a craftsperson, ensuring that each piece not only adheres to grammatical standards but also maintains narrative flow and readability. In addition to my editing work, I have two years of experience teaching English, which has further honed my ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively. I am also a freelance travel blog writer, blending my love for storytelling with my passion for exploration. Moreover, I specialize in social media copywriting, copyediting, and management, crafting engaging content to enhance online presence. I am an avid reader, deeply invested in the stories I work on, and I am dedicated to delivering high-quality, polished edits that enhance the overall narrative. My commitment to my craft ensures that my edits are comprehensive, addressing flow, continuity, readability, and grammatical accuracy. I will work my magic until your writing soars. I assist both seasoned and first-time authors with poetry manuscripts, fictional works, children's literature, biographies, memoir, self-help books and other nonfiction projects. As an editor and former college writing instructor, I have decades of experience working with writing at both the macro and micro levels, and adapting my communication style to the individual needs of each writer. I recently edited 15 nonfiction books, including 3 anthologies, for a UK-based publisher specializing in alternative spirituality topics. DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING As a developmental editor, I work with you to get your current draft into shape and ready for line-editing. I will provide an assessment of the major strengths of your manuscript, as well as the elements that need addressing in your next revision. This includes feedback on the content, structure, style and readability, and specific advice for any needed improvements in the following areas: *Nonfiction Books: overall book structure, chapter order and organization, content development, effective transitions, tone *Novels and Short Fiction: plot and pacing, character development and character arcs, description and imagery, dialogue, conflict resolution I will provide a written assessment of your book with actionable suggestions for revision, and optional video or voice consultations of up to 30 minutes. Consultation frequency depends on the length of your book and the amount of revision the current draft requires. LINE EDITING I close-read your manuscript, working at the paragraph and sentence levels to address a variety of elements, including (but not limited to) paragraph organization, main idea development, clarity, sentence structure, style, and word choice. Note: While some degree of copy editing typically occurs during this phase, it is a separate step from line editing and ideally should be treated as such. PUBLISHING INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE I am the chief writer for an online publishing startup based in the UK, which has released over 30 titles since 2015. In addition to the majority of the books themselves, I have written the sales descriptions, Amazon A+ content, promotional emails, and ad copy for each release, and have been involved in the process of cover design. We have published over 10 best-selling books on Amazon, with 8 titles acquired by Sterling Publishing, and 2 titles acquired by Hachette France. Our books have sold over 1 million copies since 2015, and have been translated into 5 languages. Our email list currently sits at over 100K subscribers. I also have experience with the traditional publishing industry, having worked with editors from Sterling Publishing on revisions to my books, so I have insights into the production process of your manuscript once it’s accepted. I can also shed light on the pros and cons of self-publishing vs traditional publishing, for authors considering both options. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS *Created 20+ original nonfiction books for UK-based online publishing startup specializing in alternative spirituality topics. I was promoted to business partner after 3 years of commissioned projects. *Over 20,000 ratings and reviews on Amazon, with an average of 4.6 stars and above. 10 titles were later acquired by Sterling Publishing, and 2 were acquired by Hachette France. *My books are translated into French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Chinese. *Over 1 million books sold in under 9 years. *Edited 10+ nonfiction books, including 3 anthologies, for UK-based online publishing startup specializing in alternative spirituality topics. *Researched, drafted and edited 300-page authorized biography of Broadway and film actor Pat Hingle from 500 pages of interview transcripts. *Writing consultant for global online higher education tutoring service. Earned commendations for high quality asynchronous tutorials. *Developed and implemented course curriculum for five university courses in English and Creative Writing.Developmental EditingStory DevelopmentArticle WritingGhostwritingPoetryFictionChildren's LiteratureNonfictionCreative WritingContent DevelopmentTeachingCopy EditingLine EditingContent EditingBook Editing - $40 hourly

Greetings! I am a freelance content writer, editor, English and reading tutor, and transcriptionist with multiple years of experience in each respective niche. As cliché as it may sound to some, writing is not merely a job or even just a career for me; it's always been a huge part of my life, and it's absolutely integral to my self-expression and who I am as a person. Lately, I've been focusing primarily on creating and editing pet care and animal science-related content, more specifically informational blogs and articles about my favorite animals, reptiles and amphibians, as well as pretty much anything else animal-related I find particularly interesting. Educating others about the natural world and sharing what I love so much about it is sort of one of my life's missions, and I dedicate a tremendous amount of time and effort to thoroughly researching and presenting my content in the most accessible, informative, and entertaining way I can. However, I'm always open to taking on new clients and projects whenever I'm able! Other passions of mine and topics I often write about include video gaming, mental health, and a wide range of LGBTQ+ topics. (It's probably worth mentioning here that I'm nonbinary, so I often go by and publish my work under my other/preferred name, Lex, in addition to my legal name.) Over the years, I've gained substantial experience in both the writing and editing sides of content creation. For some clients, I write, for others, I edit, and for a few, I've done a little of both! I also really enjoy working on creative writing projects, both as a hobby and professionally for clients, typically in the romance, mystery, science fiction, and fantasy genres. If you'd like to get a better idea of the kinds of projects I've been a part of and the consistently high quality you can expect from my work, feel free to peruse my work history and the feedback I've received below. Anyway, that's enough about me; I hope we can get in touch soon!Developmental EditingArticle WritingGhostwritingContent WritingCopywritingCopy EditingSEO WritingEnglish TutoringEditing & ProofreadingFiction WritingWritingNonfictionGeneral TranscriptionBlog ContentCreative Writing - $30 hourly

I began my career as a professional editor in 2011, during which time I edited fiction and nonfiction titles for a traditional publishing house (Destiny Image Publishers). Years later, I worked solely alongside bestselling thriller author Steven James (editing his titles Every Deadly Kiss and Every Wicked Man). In 2018, I expanded my reach into freelance editing, working with a variety of fiction and nonfiction authors, and led a writing workshop at ACFW Virginia. Now, I regularly coach authors on the craft of writing. Whether you're trying to tackle your book's hook, craft more engaging dialogue, battle POV issues, or figure out why the tension seems to be draining from your manuscript, (or if you write nonfiction titles—I haven't forgotten about you!), I offer a range of services to help you pinpoint what your manuscript needs and how to improve it. I edit according to the Chicago Manual of Style's guidelines and provide detailed and compassionate feedback in the areas of your manuscript's hook (opening), POV errors, pacing, author intrusion/info dumps, dialogue, echoed words, causality, awkward narrative, believability, showing vs. telling, overwriting, effective foreshadowing, word choice, etc. I will also look for grammatical issues in spelling, hyphenation, numerals, capitalization, punctuation errors, word usage, verb tense, sentence structure, idioms, and formatting. Finally, I'll make sure your manuscript is easy to follow, conveys the proper sense of emotion and tone, and that omitted words/phrases, inconsistencies, and repetitions are addressed. Testimonials: "Schwartz is one of the finest editors I’ve ever worked with. I wouldn’t submit a manuscript without having her look at it first." - Steven James, national bestselling novelist "I have learned more from this editing experience than I can put into words (certainly more than at any fiction writing workshop)." — Carla Pickrel, author of Memorial Day “I am speechless. I've worked with good editors before, but I have never seen anything like this. Amazing!” — Ellis Lucas, His Heart United ministries, author of The Potter and the Clay and Wanted.
