I have worked in several areas of the publishing realm, including newspaper copyediting, magazine writing, literary agency and publishing house internships, ghostwriting, freelance editing, and proofreading for a business and marketing research company. I've also worked with local authors on their novels for publication. I tend to work on a fixed-price basis instead of hourly for editing, and I work on an hourly basis for formatting. There is nothing more pleasing to me than a stack of (digital) paper filled with errors waiting for correction. I am especially interested in editing long-form works of fiction and memoir. If you need formatting for Kindle Direct Publishing, I can format your Word file and create the layout for your eBook (minus cover design) using Kindle Create. Need to "humanize" your AI content? I can do that, too. This would fall under line editing, and I can offer you a quote based on word count. Please note before contacting me that I prefer to communicate solely through Upwork messaging, and I do not do voice calls. Thank you so much for your time and consideration!Developmental Editing

“I've personally benefited from Stephen’s skill as a reader and editor. He consistently provides thorough notes and sharp commentary on both the good qualities and areas for improvement of the work I share with him. I find that he is confident and competent, asks pertinent questions, dives deep into the themes, content, and character of the work, and offers considerate and relevant fixes to problem areas in the text.” -- Mike K Developmental editor specializing in literary fiction, fantasy, and memoir. I’ve helped new writers evaluate their very first drafts and veterans who’ve already completed several, and provide clear, well-reasoned guidance on short stories, novellas, novels, and memoir. I’m new to Upwork, so please review the letters of recommendation in my portfolio in lieu of Upwork reviews at this time. ▪️What I do▪️ I evaluate manuscripts and provide global-level feedback in the form of an editorial assessment (also known as a manuscript critique or editorial letter) to help you find and fix problem areas in your manuscript, resolve any nagging feelings you have over certain passages, and of course celebrate your strengths! My developmental edits include: ✅ in-line comments in your manuscript ✅ highlights over troublesome paragraphs ✅ an editorial assessment, including a synopsis (great for agent submissions), as well as evaluations of narrative, characters, and technical elements, detailed explanations of any developmental recommendations, and a breakdown of my recommendations in order of priority to help your rewrite. ✅ a free, hour-long call a week after delivery to answer any questions you may have about the feedback given. You can see an example Editorial Assessment / Manuscript Critique in my portfolio. (Please note that the manuscript title, author, and character names have been changed to preserve author privacy, and that evaluations of short story collections will differ slightly.) ▪️About Me▪️ ✅ Knowledgeable: I have reviewed and assessed dozens of works, some of which have gone on to be published or been used in successful MFA applications. ✅ Transparent: I offer clear pricing, reliable communications, and manage my deadlines. Unlike Douglass Adams, I don’t like whooshing sound they make as they go by. I work hard to stick to agreed upon timetables and to keep you updated on the status of your book. I also provide a free, hour-long meeting after delivery to discuss the review and answer any questions you may have from the assessment. ✅ Flexible: I almost always give multiple paths forward to resolve any problems I find in manuscript drafts, and, though I will read your work independently and use my own metrics for assessment, I will also take time to address any concerns you have about your manuscript as well. ✅ Personable: I will always interact with you as a fellow human being and will never treat you like some kind of robot whom I expect to accept my recommendations without feeling. Submitting a manuscript to an editor can be an anxiety-inducing experience—and frustrating if the editor is a psycho or a twit. I always edit out of a place of mindfulness and care, for both you and the reader, and will work to reflect that back to you in our partnership. "l really appreciate and value the thoughtfulness and thoroughness of Stephen's feedback. He really considered my draft carefully, and his suggestions were of very high quality." --Jim H.Developmental Editing
