✍️ Hi, I'm Kourtney. I’m the type of editor who gets invested—I’ll fall in love with your characters and root for them till the very end. I view my role as an editor as your partner in that we’ll work together to preserve your voice while elevating it to give the story all that it deserves. However, I will also challenge you when I know you’re capable. The ultimate goal is to push you and your story to new heights, and we’ll reach those heights together! Since started my freelancing editing business in mid-2021, I've edited over 40 books. 💻 My rates are different for each service I offer. - For developmental editing: $35/hour - For a manuscript evaluation: $20/hour - For a first 5k pass: $35/hour - For fiction ghostwriting or content writing: $35/hour ✨MANUSCRIPT WISHLIST: fantasy (all subgenres); romance (all subgenres except dark romance); cozy mysteries, and historical fiction 💚WHAT MY AUTHORS SAY: "Words cannot express how encouraging, helpful, and professional Kourtney has been. She gave me more confidence in my writing ability and kindly offered honest, useful, and necessary feedback that transformed my novel from good to fantastic. It is a vulnerable thing to hand your work over to a stranger. Kourtney went out of her way to provide thoughtful feedback and resources for improving my craft while also highlighting my strengths as a writer. My favorite part of her developmental editing service was the Book Map, which allowed me to go through my novel beat by beat to see which scenes needed to be cut, which moments could be removed or lengthened, and how the pacing could be tightened up. I cannot recommend her highly enough, and I hope many more writers and aspiring authors have the opportunity to benefit from her expertise!" - Nixie Bishop, author, Germany "Kourtney's developmental edits were thoughtful, focused, and pointed. She is not an editor who will simply tell you to "show not tell" or some other trite nonsense--she'll show you what plot point isn't clicking, what character needs more screen time, what scene could be longer/shorter, and then give suggestions and examples of solutions for the problem. She clearly spent a lot of time with my book and even read the first in the series to ensure she had a good grounding in my world before offering feedback (so she read TWO of my books to edit ONE!). My developmental letter was 16 pages of feedback broken down into what worked, what didn't, and what I should consider in my next round of revisions. Her in-line comments on my manuscript were earnest and joyful, even when giving critique. I cannot recommend Kourtney enough!" - Kel Bruem, author of The Unusualities Series "It’s hard to judge an editor’s feedback from a small sample, and I’ve had experiences with editors where I did not feel the price I paid matched the level of feedback I was looking for. Usually, this meant the editor gave a lot of praise, but did not focus as much on things I could improve, or the scope wasn’t as broad. I pay an editor for their services so they can tell me where my weak points are, for the most part. Kourtney's services were fair for the pricing and went above and beyond with the level of feedback you provided, both in detail and in scope." -Alexandria Warwick, author of The Four Wind Series which was picked up by Simon & Schuster in October 2023 WHAT MY WRITING CLIENTS SAY: "This is the first time I have worked with Kourtney, and I can honestly say it has been an amazing experience. Throughout the process, there was excellent communication and understanding which really made our complex project much easier. The ebook we received was thoroughly researched, very well written, very informative, and certainly exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend this seller to anyone looking for top-notch professional work. I will definitely return for future projects. Awesome job. Easily 5 stars." - $5,000 project "Kourtney was prompt, professional, and produced a final product that blew me away with its thoroughness. She even delivered it early! She read what was on my blog and wrote a post similar in structure and tone. It was well-written, thoughtful, and had references to back it up. I am so impressed! Highly recommend and will work with her again." - $1,500 projectFiction WritingArticle WritingPsychologySports WritingCopywritingBeta ReadingCreative WritingProofreadingBook WritingEbook WritingWebsite ContentEditing & ProofreadingGhostwriting - $35 hourly

ETA: I am currently being SWAMPED by invites for projects that pay only 2 cents a word. I receive ~20 of them a week. PLEASE do not invite me to apply to your job unless you’re willing to pay at least ten cents a word. I auto-decline all jobs that pay less, no matter how interesting they seem, because as much as I love to write, I do need to be compensated fairly as a professional and don't want to waste your time-- or mine! :) Do you want to turn your idea into the best novel possible? Put that idea in the hands of an expert. I am the author of over 100 novels with 11 traditionally published books (Random House, Sourcebooks, Harlequin). I am experienced in writing in all fiction for all ages (adult, young adult, mid-grade, and children's) and most genres (thriller, fantasy, dystopian, mystery, steamy romance, etc). I've been nominated for an RWA RITA in YA fiction, and my books have garnered rave and starred reviews from the major outlets. My specialty is ghostwriting novels. I've worked with several NYT and USAT bestselling authors to help them fill out their stable of self-published titles, and many of those books have become USAT or Amazon bestsellers. Several of my clients have secured agents and book deals. I pride myself on getting "your" style and seamlessly adapting to it. I can write like Nora Roberts or Stephen King. Whatever your style, I can pull it off. I work quickly and can usually finish a GOOD 50k-word novel in 1 month, based on your outline. If you are struggling to get traditionally published, I can help! Wondering if you have to sell your soul to attract an agent? Let me take a look at your query letter or book and give you an honest assessment as to why agents have passed you by. Written yourself into a corner? I am a born plot-whisperer who loves to brainstorm and help you find your way out. I offer coaching services, including full-novel critiques and developmental edits, as well as query critiques and career advice. I am proud that I have my name in the acknowledgments of dozens of traditionally published novels, and I would consider it an honor to help you reach your dream of publishing yours. The last thing you need to know about me is that I'm not a diva. This is business, and I don't deal in "special." When you contract with me, you can rest assured I will deliver what you want, when you want it. I can't wait to work with you! Don't take my word for it! Listen to what the professionals have had to say about my work! "Fantastically Creepy Psychological Horror." -- Booklist "A bloody, wonderfully creepy scare ride." -- Kirkus "With a wink and a nod to Stephen King's THE SHINING, Balog provides a shocker for the young adult crowd." -- VOYA, Starred Review "Like a PG-13 version of Gone Girl. A page-turner that will keep readers riveted, this is a treat for mystery fans and will keep readers guessing right up until the end." -- Kirkus "Twisted, engrossing."-- Kirkus "This first-rate thriller delivers everything a thriller should."-- VOYA "Suspense, believable characters, and an imaginative twist on a ghost story/romance make for a lovely read." -- Kirkus "An interesting, quick-paced, and compelling paranormal romance." -- School Library Journal "Masterfully paced, the tension builds to greater and greater heights. Just when the reader can barely stand it, a series of incredible plot twists bring the tale to an ambiguous conclusion that will leave readers begging for a sequel. " - School Library Connection “Full of suspense, romance, and mystery, this is a thrilling read that will appeal to fans of dystopian adventures.” – VOYA “An atmospheric, uneasy tale of survival.” – Kirkus ETA: PLEASE do not invite me to apply to your job unless you’re willing to pay at least twenty cents a word. I have over 35 years of bilingual (English/Spanish) writing and translation experience. I have taught English to Spanish speaking people of all ages, and Spanish to English speakers in schools, institutions, and through private tutoring. As an indie publisher, I have edited, formatted, and published books which have won awards for both content and quality of formatting/publication. I also have over 15 years experience with creating and editing newsletters, brochures, and other business documents. I am experienced in social media, and have been responsible for handling all social media for groups, businesses, and organizations. I have been published and won awards for my writing in several genres, including creative non-fiction, journalism, poetry, short stories, and plays, including some which have been produced and performed. I have nearly two decades of administrative experience and customer service in a variety of settings. Service Description: I provide translation services for all types of documents. Whether one page or book length, your project will get the same dedication to detail. I am completely bilingual and know that I can provide a true translation that is one that does not translate only the words, but the actual meaning. Actual word for word translation is not always accurate. Depending on the context of the sentence, the exact word translation could be offensive and not the actual meaning which was supposed to be conveyed. I offer formatting services for manuscripts, particularly for Amazon KDP (previously CreateSpace) specifications, as well as editing and translation services. I have been telling stories consistently since I was performing puppet shows for my family in the living room. While my puppet friends and I have parted ways, I still cannot stop myself from seeking out stories and comedy - whether that's in everyday conversations or in my writing. In 2012 I began working on my own personal humor blog satirizing culture, politics, and myself. Working with kids from 2016 to 2019 also gave me an insight into young minds, helping me develop my own sense of creativity and imagination. While studying to get my degree in Writing from Eastern University, I discovered my passion for collaboration as editor-in-chief of Inklings, the college literary magazine. I also had the opportunity to write several short plays alongside the actors that would be performing in them, which was a valuable lesson in learning how to write for and with other people. I am constantly using this skill as a freelancer, balancing my own creative voice with the needs of my clients. My favorite projects have been the children's books, middle grade books, and young adult novels that I have ghostwritten. However, I can write for any age, and have written many genres, from humor, to science fiction, to fantasy, and thriller. For me, the most rewarding aspect of writing is helping others find their voices through believable characters and intriguing plots. This is not the only way to tell a story, though, as I have also helped create various funny scripts for YouTube, the stage, and other types of media. Is your story already written, you just need someone else to take a look and suggest improvements? I can edit it as well, telling you the hard truths while sticking to your vision. If you have a story you'd like to tell, feel free to reach out and I'd love to discuss how I can help. I can work on hourly projects (I estimate being able to write between 450-900 words per hour and edit between 900-1,800 words per hour), or write at a fixed rate of $0.18 per word (for books of 10,000+ words) or $0.20 per word (for books below 10,000 words). My editing rate is around $0.09 per word, depending on how extensive the edits need to be. My grandfather designed and built houses. My father was a chemical engineer and a woodworker who constructed furniture during the weekend. I like to think that the building impulse is in my genes; my raw material is not wood and nails but rather words. My passion for language and story precipitated my choices in my studies and in my career. As an English teacher, I love teaching students who are preparing for college and careers. I have also worked with student writers who have gained national recognition for their fiction and poetry. I have helped people expand their writing to elaborate on details and I have helped writers reduce their writing to fit a particular word count. My MA in Writing Studies allowed me to focus on my passion: fiction and poetry. While in the program, I also worked with journalism, editing, and nonfiction of all sorts. I have written 3 books as well. My skills include: • Close reading for grammar, spelling, organization, syntax, etc. • Correcting issues with wording, voice, and sentence structure. • Providing feedback on content. • Providing editorial support for application essays. • Providing editorial support for essays and other works of nonfiction. • Assisting poets and fiction writers with development of their work. • Tailoring writing to a specific audience. • Tutoring individuals who want to improve their writing. Hi! I'm Dante. I do expert work at intermediate rates. I conducted my course studies in English Literature and have gone on to use the skills I've developed in a variety of diverse contexts. Strong writing, of course, requires a mastery of the English language, but it also requires the ability to tell compelling stories. Throughout my career, I have combined these skills to excel professionally in non-profit development; business and academic ghostwriting; and theater criticism and, among my personal projects, fiction writing; songwriting; and philosophical essays. My most valuable asset is my ability to understand, internalize, and communicate my client's vision, using adept writing and editing skills to share your message in a compelling way. While my professional experience thus far highlights specific kinds of writing, I am happy to do it all!
