Iris Jacobs (1979) is a Dutch visual artist and filmmaker currently based in Barcelona. Jacobs has been exposed to a stream of music and musicians during her childhood and she could watch music videos for hours. She loved to dance, imitate sillywalks and design characters, while as she cycled through nature and pinched her arm at age eleven to wonder if this life was even real.
When she was 18 she moved to Amsterdam to explore 'the big city' and unlock her career path.
After graduating The Academy of Cultural & Social Design in 2005 she worked as a creative producer and programmer forseveral theatre companies. Her longing to create became bigger and she launched her career as a free lance art director & production designer in 2006 designing and making objects (props), sets and atmospheres for both film and photography productions. Her first job as a set designer was for a film production and the love for cinema and working on film sets was born.
In 2013 Jacobs starts to explore collage and collage-based stop motion film, discovering that by creating abstract and imaginary spaces she can expand reality both visually and mentally. During these times she created her first more figurative collage series 'The Plants' and 'Las Bestias Extraordinaires'.
This resulted in her first abstract collage series: 'Close To Silence'(2017), later followed by 'Hang In There' (2020). Her collage work is praised for the way it combines textures, colors and shapes to create both physical and poetic depth in configurations that can be welcoming and alienating at the same time, evoking comparisons to masters of surrealism. Her work has been showcased in several galleries and concept stores in Barcelona, has been published in a number of art magazines, and is available on various contemporary art platforms like Kiekie Art, and Tricera.net.
Her first short film 'Fight Flight Free' premiered in Barcelona in 2018, and travelled the festival circuit worldwide. Since then she has made a number of music video’s and (dance) films.
Currently Jacobs is working on a new collage series; 'Leaving Things Out', writing and directing several film projects and theatre performances, while expanding the workshops and experiences she designs for 'Curious Creatives', a community of artists in Barcelona; which she founded in 2018.
