(Scroll down to see my Music Production and Songwriting services description). WRITER/EDITOR I have worked as a writer and editor for more than 30 years. I started as a magazine editor, transitioned to online editing during the dot com boom, and along the way have served varied business and consumer audiences. I have written and edited feature stories, product reviews, columns, newsletters and website copy. My column at PC World explored human behavior in the Information Age, and led to a fellowship at the Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at U.C. Berkeley. When studying English literature, my emphasis was in creative writing. I bring that background to create engaging copy. My managing editor at PC World attests to my linguistic flair, while other colleagues swear by my thoroughness and accuracy. I can be as outlandish and colloquial as a street performer, if it's called for, but my accuracy and attention to detail never suffer. I'm equally at home with a more subdued and authoritative voice. I've written white papers for the EPA, for example, and understand the importance of the narrative fitting the expectations of the audience. Writing about technology at PC World and CNet certainly required technical accuracy, as well as the ability to boil down wide-ranging issues into easily digestible information. I was well prepared to do so, having cut my teeth editing technical articles by cable TV engineers, followed by years of reporting on construction and architectural projects. In working for award-winning publications and websites, I have proved my ability to produce top-quality editorial content, regardless of the subject matter or audience. MUSIC PRODUCER/SONGWRITER I offer full music production services, specializing in live instruments. I sing and play guitar, bass, drums and keys, among others. I also offer custom songwriting for lyricists, and have written a couple dozen custom songs for clients seeking a one-of-a-kind gift. I make broadcast-quality recordings. My music has appeared in over 300 TV episodes on major broadcast and cable channels, including NBC, CBS, Discovery, A&E, and MTV. I use professional instruments, microphones, outboard gear, and software. Final mixes are mastered (unless you'd rather master elsewhere). My primary instruments are guitar (acoustic and electric) and drums. Other instruments include bass, keyboards, lap steel, ukulele and banjo. I have written and recorded several hundred songs over the years. My most recent album, "Punch Drunk Moon" by Sons of the Golden West, was played on more than 50 radio stations and made the chart at three of them. I also release music under my own name. A recent single as Eric Butterfield, "Boy In A Bubble," placed Runner-Up in the 2020 Song of the Year competition. My first single was a semi-finalist in the 2017 International Songwriting Competition (unsigned category). My sound generally leans toward singer/songwriter, indie rock and Americana. I do mellow ballads, mid-tempo rock, and can get fast and heavy, with a gritty vocal (I can share my vocal audition for Stone Temple Pilots). My basic song production includes five instruments and one vocal. Additional instruments include hand drums and percussion and hundreds of virtual instruments. I am easy to work with and take direction well. I pride myself on delivering the highest quality music I can for my clients. I consider this to be a collaborative process, and want to make your song come to life. I have loads of music samples beyond what is in my online portfolio. Just ask. If what you want is not a good match for my experience and skills, I won't waste your time. I have yet to have a client reject my creation as sub par, and have received nothing but top ratings for my recordings, songwriting, and communication.

I love school and have many credits in diverse subjects to prove this! Most of my focus has been on Creative Writing in the form of fiction -- from novella or flash fiction to novel-length manuscripts. You can find my published novel, "All the Quiet Places" on Amazon. I used an old Irish myth for inspiration, set the coming-of-age in pre–World War Two in the United Kingdom, and added in subtle flavors of whimsy. Doing the research was a blast! I love investigating projects and am a researcher at heart. All the aspects of a manuscript that pull from real life must be as true as possible. I learned a lot about the publishing practice through trial and error and talking with successful writers currently in the market. I have experience working in creative non-fiction and working in MLA format. My last instructor now uses my final project as a perfect example for English 1A students. I did my last thesis-length project on autism and criminal justice. This was a project that was significant for me as I have a child with autism spectrum disorder. It was crucial that I had all my resources up to date, and could back up any assertions made. This was a heartbreaking project to tackle that I clocked over 80 hours in. I have completed several creative writing classes at Gotham City College out of New York. The focus was creative writing -- story plot and creating complex characters. I took my last class in Scriptwriting in the Spring of 2023 and was mentored by a professional screenwriter. I currently have a script on Blacklist which earned a solid 7 out of 10. It’s called “Exiting” and it’s a pilot for a limited series. It contains a strong interesting protagonist, complex antagonist, humor, love story, action, and suspense. I am proficient with many writing programs. My favorites are Microsoft Word for manuscripts and Final Draft (industry standard) for script writing. I am proficient with Vellum for self-publishing. Other education that is helpful: I hold an advanced certificate in Criminal Justice. I spent a semester working for my local police department in their evidence room but also read through many crime reports. Ultimately, I decided that a career in Criminal Justice was not for me, but I did learn a lot along the way. This experience has been very valuable in reading and editing projects where a crime element is involved. I am also a trained massage therapist and hypnotherapist with advanced degrees in both. I have worked in the spa field for the last 25 years. With advanced work in massage training, I have a working knowledge of human anatomy and some physiology. I excel at deciphering medical terminology. My education continues in philosophy and psychology. I have a special interest in the dark triad, Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy, and true crime in general. With my experience and education in criminal justice, psychology, and anatomy I have a wealth of knowledge in forensic writing.
