I have worked in banking for over ten years—all the while learning how to utilize all of the Excel data analysis tools. Recently I have started using Python for analysis and automation. From system testing to dashboard creation to model development, banking has allowed me to learn many of the finer points of Excel. I have also learned Excel VBA and have used it not only in my banking career but also have done work for a few clients on the side. Those clients are in the hospitality industry and needed to make quick work of several weekly food and beverage inventory audits. We worked together to make file imports nothing more than a simple point and click, then automated the 30 minutes of previously manual data analysis into a mere five minutes! Along the way, we added several custom features to their template, including dynamic drop-downs, data-dependent logic, and conditional formatting. The final result was a dashboard highlighting KPIs and the top products contributing to their customers' expenses and profit. I have also developed a restaurant scheduling template that works off predefined lists and uses a Gantt Chart-like visual to show what shifts are covered and where scheduling gaps exist. This same template also incorporates an estimate of weekly sales, allowing the business manager to keep Labor Cost % under a certain threshold. Since labor cost and estimated sales both exist in the template, managers can make scheduling decisions with immediate feedback on the impact it will have on the bottom line.Google Spreadsheets
