Sure, you want error-free copy. Everyone does. But you need more than that. You need writing that makes sense. That expresses your true vision clearly. That showcases your products and services positively. That resonates and connects with your reader. Most editing focuses on "fixing problems." As an expert business and technical wordsmith with over 30 years of experience, I go far beyond this limited approach, focusing on optimizing your writing. My core skill is communication, and I can provide value to you that goes far beyond fixing typos: I can transform your ordinary source material into polished, precise, professional prose. An MBA and MS in Computer Science from MIT, combined with decades of experience in the business world, allow me to understand and enhance technical reports, business whitepapers, websites, books, sales copy, and much more. Upon hiring me, a client recently summarized my editing in three words: "Do your magic." I also have decades of experience managing projects of various sizes to successful completion, including taking a 1,100-page book from concept to printed copies in hand in four months (a timeframe I had been told by a publisher was "impossible"). Let me apply my organizational, detail, and coordination skills to bring order to any chaos plaguing your business. I work quickly and efficiently, and I communicate with you promptly and professionally. Guaranteed. What can I do for you? - Turn your white paper, book, ebook, website, or manual from mundane and error-filled to a clear, flowing, professional work of art. - Review any writing on any platform to provide feedback on how to make it shine. - Help you manage your projects to guide them to successful completion -- on time and under budget. - Transform nearly any type of data into any other type with high speed and accuracy. I get results faster, more accurately and often even cheaper than so-called "budget solutions." - Solve virtually any problem with Excel spreadsheets. - Edit your photos to perfection using my 30" hardware-calibrated monitor. - Much more. Ask me! I'm very adaptable and constantly expanding my skills. Specific credentials: - MS in Computer Science and MBA from MIT - Published author of 1,600 page book on TCP/IP networking technologies. - Main author, project manager, and general editor of 1,100 page book on networking. - Several years of experience editing articles for a major online website. - Edited and produced output from a team of analysts for three years. - Dozens of websites, ebooks and manuals designed, restructured and edited. - Member of the American Copy Editors Society (ACES). - Over 30 years of Excel and data processing experience. - Published and award-winning photographer and photo editor. - Over 250 projects completed, and over $250,000 in earnings on freelancing sites with a 100% success rate. I'm an expert and versatile writer and editor with many years of corporate and academic experience. I've ghostwritten and/or edited almost every kind of document -- speeches, books, articles, fiction, dissertations, grant/thesis proposals, and much more. For 20+ years, I wrote speeches and other top-management communications for the CEOs and other senior executives of General Motors, Kraft Foods, Philip Morris, and others. For six years I was the speechwriter for Roger B. Smith, CEO of General Motors. One of those speeches appeared in a movie, Michael Moore's "Roger and Me." The fact that I could write for these exceedingly demanding clients and keep my job year after year should indicate the level of professionalism that I can bring to your project, whether we're starting from scratch, working from an outline, or polishing a rough draft. I am one of a very few freelance writers with advanced academic credentials: BA, Brown University; MA, PhD, University of Chicago - all in linguistics. I'm the author of numerous articles and three books on writing ("Write Choices," "Writing Great Speeches," "Perfect Phrases for Executive Presentations"). Book authors and article writers: I'll take on projects in any stage of development. I have extensive practice in developmental editing. I will fill out your manuscript and make content suggestion along the way. I'll make sure there is mechanical and grammatical perfection, as well as coherence within chapters and across the entire manuscript. Corporate communicators and executives: Call on me for your white papers, business/trade journal articles, annual reports, strategy/mission statements...and any other projects that use words to advance your business goals. Speechmakers: I've written almost every kind of speech there is -- wedding toasts, commencement speeches, financial/shareholder presentations, community/civic addresses, keynotes, tributes, and many more. Since I'm a trained linguist, I can analyze your style and make sure the speech sounds just as if you wrote it. For many years, I was among the nation's most well-recognized and highly-paid speechwriters (I worked corporate, so I wasn't visible as White House speechwriters so often are). Academic and professional writers: I can edit and polish your article or paper in the appropriate journal style, with the necessary academic clarity and precision. Whatever your writing/speaking project, whatever stage it's in, get in touch with me, and I'll make suggestions for filing it out, polishing it up, and making it as effective as possible. PS. If you have read this far, you will, I hope, have the patience for one final comment, about fees. I almost always bid high, because I have a standout brand --- who else on Upwork has my academic and corporate credentials? -- and the level of service I provide is worth it. Knowledge of linguistics really does make me a better editor. Compensation for freelance writing must not be a race to the bottom. So much is involved in successful editing or ghostwriting, so many decisions in so many aspects of language...how can you be sure that your speech, manuscript, or whatever (and along with it, your public image), is in the best of hands? I can't understand people who specify "Entry-level" at $5 an hour. What do they expect? Would you submit your body to an "entry-level" surgeon? Anyone who becomes my client enters into a bond of trust, the same as you would with your electrician, dentist, or brain surgeon. You want a perfect performance, no screw-ups, not a single misplaced comma. When I ask for more money, it's because my client is paying for that peace of mind. .GrammarBusiness Proposal WritingAcademic ProofreadingResume WritingAcademic EditingSpeech WritingProofreadingTechnical WritingContent WritingArticle WritingCopywritingBookGhostwritingEnglishEditing & ProofreadingBusiness Writing - $35 hourly

As a professional creative writer, I understand that strong writing can take readers out of their tumultuous lives, give respite to weary, overstimulated minds, and invite them to process, and understand the mysteries of life through journeying along with resonant characters. The skills I possess include comprehension, organization, attention to detail, creativity, and focused follow-through. It’s important to me to produce the highest quality work. Therefore, my preference is to work with clients who seek excellence over abundance. The type of work I’m most interested in is storytelling. Whether it be flash fiction, short stories, novellas, or novels – I love bringing stories to life. I’m also interested in gaining more experience working on comics, animations, and scripts. My strengths lie in blending genres including horror, supernatural, thriller, dystopian, and exciting stories. I liken storytelling to musical compositions that play with space and time where the pace can nearly stop to strike a fatal chord or speed recklessly in a dizzying frenzy. My approach to storytelling is to follow the characters. To compose a good story is like excavating an archaeological site – it starts with a theory of the story and where it will go, but as you unearth details of the characters personalities, their motivations, associations, and as the world grows around key events – then the story becomes clear and impactful. Elements of stories that I’m not interested in writing (regardless of genre) encompass vivid gore, depravity, torture, sexual violence, the grotesque, and disgust. I’m not looking to write shocking things to jolt people. Each of the aforementioned topics, however, can be part of collaborated stories, not as the focal point, but as a device to express things such as horror. But I much prefer keeping these elements in the shadows akin to Hitchcock versus modern shock and awe. The collaboration process is simple. Communication must be clear and open. Ideas must flow freely. Constructive criticism must be expected and shared respectfully. My goal is to bring your story to life. My creativity and experience will organize the words for your approval. You always have free reign to rework parts of dialogue or sections to better reflect your vision. To that point, I cannot get into your head and see what you see – all I can do is interpret your notes. The last thing I’d like to speak to is pace and the time it takes to create. Most clients I’ve encountered (and passed on their stories) want the story written last week and have unrealistic expectations. As I said above, I’m looking to provide high quality, excellent work. Part of good story telling – really, the biggest part happens while processing. It’s like steeping tea, or (I’m told) aged wine. It’s always a shame to blast through something and wish it was different because it was rushed. If you’re still reading, then I think that shows a particular skill for keeping readers engaged. About me: My fascination with storytelling and conveying ideas has me consuming excessive amounts of varied media with great range. Anything from blockbuster to indie movies, classic novels to children’s books, to east and west philosophy, and copious amounts of documentaries. All this exposure to the human condition is what makes characters believable and atmospheres vivid. My first poems were published in an anthology when I was 17. At that age I also started playing in underground bands where by 18 we had a record deal with a record label based in Germany. I spent about 1997 to 2018 playing in bands, recorded over a dozen albums, toured the USA coast-to-coast a dozen times. Toured Canada and 9 countries in Europe. In 2014 I had a short story published in an anthology which caused me to begin to slow down with music and focus more on writing. In 2018 I was invited to share a short story at a live reading, which led to an invitation to share the same story on a radio show. Since 2022 I’ve published two short stories, a poem, and a novella. I also turned the novella into a radio play, which features myself as narrator, character actors reading dialogue, 88 sound effects, and I wrote seven instrumental songs that are set between the book’s chapters. I’ve performed the radio play live several times (Boston, Portsmouth, Portland among others) with illustrations projected, live readers, sound effects, and music. I’ve been hired also to write stories including a dystopian novel.GrammarProofreadingGeneral TranscriptionError DetectionEssay WritingEditing & ProofreadingGhostwritingShort Story WritingBook WritingFiction WritingCreative Writing - $30 hourly
