For the last year, starting in 2021, I have been working at a daycare as a teacher. My first year I worked there I was the teacher for preschool (4-5 years old). Other then basic skills a teacher has to maintain like writing curriculum, upholding a positively educated, accessible classroom environment, and teaching required academic skills, I was also challenged with establishing healthy and beneficial behavioral, emotional, and cognitive disciplines into my classroom and curriculum. Teaching at a daycare is definitely different from teaching in a school district because we do not have a clinical service within our facility. So all of the behavioral, emotional, and cognitive issues a child exhibits has to be managed and maintained on our own. We are also not allowed to suggest that a child may need extra help, because we do not have the license to diagnose or assess a students disabilities, unless a parent concerns the office with it, and even then we are only able to tell our administration what differences we see in a child compared to his fellow classmates. So when a child does seem to be struggling in any aspect, we have to either take it upon ourselves to figure out ways to help with this child's performance or let the child fall behind. In my classroom, without even knowing how my children will perform, I have created multiple ways to manage positive reinforcement behaviorally, encourage emotional understanding, and a multistep plan for cognitive and academic learning. When a specific child has behavioral issues in my classroom I create scheduled behavioral plans, depending on their age, and reward them after a certain amount of time, or after certain activities, depending on what their behavioral issue entails. What I have learned about myself and about children in general is that all behavioral issues are different and all children respond to correction in a different way. Even if two children may act the same way, one may like being sat down and talked to compared to another who may need to take a break and read a book or do a brain stimulating activity. Emotionally, working with young children is VERY challenging, especially the younger they get. With my preschool children during circle time I have a book that I will go over that looks at different emotions and ask them what they should do when feeling a certain way. I also have created different art and academic activities to also help develop this understanding of their emotions and how to deal with them. Academically and cognitively, if a specific child seems to be falling behind in a certain area, like fine motor, gross motor, academic material, ect., I have placed a multistep plan where I will have them take a step back from where their peers are and have them do a easier task at first and then work their way up from there. I also may sometimes allow them to have a couple extra minutes at a certain center they may need to pay more attention to and take away from an area they have a strong suit in. After my first 10 months of working as a preschool teacher, I was a floating teacher working certain days in certain age groups. For the next 3-4 months I worked with children ages 6 weeks-3years old. Depending on the age group I would still perform time scheduled behavior plans for specific children that needed it, reinforcing them in a shorter amount of time. For the past 4 months I have currently been aiding and assisting in the kindergarten class and after school program. The after school program consists of children ages 5-12 years old, and these children are usually with each other, so they are being exposed to children years younger than them, and others years older. I am able to see how children of different ages act socially and physically. I am able to get a diverse look at the differences between age groups and especially the differences between individual children within the same age group. I have learned ways to include children of different backgrounds, ethnicity and learning styles. Engaging children of different cultures and ethnicities has been an interesting discovery to me and watching these different backgrounds collide together gives great insight on their differences behaviorally, emotionally, and academically. I also shadowed a school psychologist and clinical services at a school district outside of my daycare and got the rundown of how assessment works and the different kinds of plans they offer, what the interpretation of their data looks like and how it is written out and introduced to teachers, children and parents. I learned how different areas of clinical services in a school environment work together and all have a part in providing these interventions for a child.IBM SPSSManagement SkillsBehavior-Driven DevelopmentSpecial EducationTeachingCurriculum DevelopmentPsychologyTeenChildBehavioral DesignHealth & FitnessHealth & Wellness - $25 hourly
