My career in IT began in 2007. After graduating as a Developer, I explored various IT roles before finding my niche as a Business Analyst. I pursued a Diploma in Business Analysis and a Post-Grad in Information Technology, excelling in the Business Analysis module. For over seven years, I honed my skills in the Financial Sector. Early projects were modest, mainly involving the maintenance of existing software, but these experiences granted me a profound understanding of numerous systems, processes, and people. Business process optimisation and engineering was the air that I breathed. As a peoples advocate, I volunteered to coordinate initiatives aimed at developing high-performance teams, fostering creativity and collaboration while streamlining procedures. During a much-needed break from theoretical studies, I pursued a passion for fashion design, enrolling part-time in a course at a fashion design college. I emerged with new skills and an obsession with design. One of my notable contributions during this period was designing Old Mutual's only branded banking product and its supporting digital platforms. This startup environment was perfect for me, igniting my entrepreneurial spirit. Later, I was seconded to several projects within a large-scale and complex business transformation program. These projects aimed to deliver tangible benefits to the organisation’s customers through its products, policies, and operations. This was my first encounter with UX Designers, where I was tasked with developing a CX Metrics Framework to measure the maturity of Old Mutual's customer experience. I fell in love with User-Centred Design, enrolled in a UX course, and landed a UX job. While settling into the role, I helped to build the UX practice. Fast forward a year and I was designing for all the financial institution’s digital touch points and products including a learning platform, a customer portfolio management platform, an investment centre. My team was exceptionally collaborative, multi-disciplined, and cross-functional. I enjoyed wearing various hats to fulfil team obligations. As a side project, I led the effort to design our team's way of working for the smooth delivery of products and features. I even dabbled in Conversation Design. It was an exhilarating period. I had learnt a great deal and was feeling confident to explore something new, so I jumped at the opportunity to venture into new territory as a Service Designer. My days were filled testing the efficacy of the operations and systems enabling business services. I could draw from principles of design thinking, user experience design and business strategy to address the complexities of delivering the services. Service Design revealed the bigger picture and nudged me toward entrepreneurship. Today, I manage multiple brands, including Hummingbird Human Experience Design. As the owner of HummingbirdHXD I advocate for the importance of user-centred design, even and especially in smaller organisations. I teach small business owners about User-Centred Design and how to apply it in their ventures. Another brand is a thrift store. These businesses are gaining traction in spite of their amateurish online presence. I launched with the bare minimum to generate income and gather data for informed business and design decisions. My product roadmap looks good though and I’m ready to hit the gas though. Watch this space. I am equally grateful for every obstacle placed in my path that matured me and every achievement that motivated me. I am grateful for every twist and turn that broadened my mind. I am blessed.
