It's been said that anyone who can read can write, and while that's true, this statement fails to address the issue of *writing well.* For example, the instructions on the back of a toothpaste tube are written, but you'd hardly curl up with a good tube of toothpaste for pleasure reading. The difference between writing and writing well is vitally important in the professional sphere and that's why I'm passionate about putting an engaging, creative spin on professional and academic writing. Having worked as a writing tutor, an office manager, and spent years studying English literature, I'd like to think I have a unique handle on what constitutes engaging *and* intelligent writing: writing that not only clearly communicates information but keeps readers from falling asleep. At heart, I'm an academic. I love long articles about obscure literature, cerebral social commentaries, and cleverly-done satire, and I strive to reflect those desires in my work. My research interests are gender studies, social justice issues, and mental illness, and these are exactly the topics I focused on during my term in Gardner-Webb University's Summer Scholar Program. Through the course of an intense five-week program, I used my research grant to investigate the correlation between madness and misogyny in Charlotte Perkins' Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," connecting this text to our present-day eroticization of female submission. My resulting article-- "The Rest Cure as Regression: Refuting Patriarchal Infantilization in "The Yellow Wallpaper"-- has since been accepted for publication in the Fall 2019 issue of Gardner-Webb University's Journal of Counselling and Psychology.
