    Information System Architect and Developer with 12+ years of experience and entrepreneur at Boteco Software House. During this time, I worked in the civil service, private corporation and as freelancer with dozens of clients. These experiences taught me not only what really works and what don't, but also what works better in each scenario. After I realized I wasn't quite bad working with business systems and scaling, I decided that I should pursue it as a career. Business systems shouldn't develop anything from scratch or work with low level source codes as it happens on academic, operational system and application industry. I normally help companies to avoid reinventing the wheel and use technological standards available. By using Information System methodology you will save a great deal of investment and reduce considerably the maintenance expenses of the system. Depending on the business phase, a different strategy will give you a different ROI. A business normally have 3 phases: validation, scaling and optimization. In each scenario, the Information System should be different. If you want to scale, you must be prepared to have a massive amount of data. So, the database is the most important part. A well designed relational database can outperform a naive one while avoid the hidden complexities of a non-relational database. The database design is just half technical. A good part of the job is to understand the business domain. Clear names and rules for the moving parts of your business avoid to create exceptions and require manual actions. This is the secret sauce to scale. If you're scaling, you already know what your users want. This is very good, because we can avoid trials and errors in the development process. When you plan, you can refine mock-ups and estimate the cost of each feature before to commit with the actual product. The infrastructure that scales the best is the one huge server. The communication is much faster inside the server than sending over the internet. Also the Web enables you to have a thick server while you have a thin client. Normally, you can avoid complex user interfaces and focus on what matters the most for the user: data and reports.
