In my most recent long term gig I have had the pleasure of working in an DevOps/SRE role for a startup called ePrize, LLC out of college. For 16 consecutive years I provided highly available applications on a handful of multi-tenant LAMP stacks backed by MySQL with separate OLTP and OLAP pairs with hundreds of databases, millions of rows and terabytes of data. I often helped develop automated deployment tooIs for the developers of the SaaS platforms and jumped in when things like builds failed or a syntax error got thrown. In my most recent project continuous integration was triggered after dual peer approval kicking off the build, test, deploy workflow. For that setup we used Terraform and Terragrunt to automate infrastructure deployments to 4 different dev/test/QA/Production LAMP stacks. Everything from traditional networking, AWS Transit Gateways, Routing, VPNs, ECS, CloudWatch and OpsGenine integrations, you name it, terraform did it (mostly). In that 16 year span, I received several promotions that led me through a career of being an individual contributor, team member and owner of all traditional IT related systems. I reported to the CTO as he converted traditional software engineers into agile scrum teams on 2-week sprints. During this I was able to get my team incorporated into the Scrum teams as needed. The SaaS platforms are available to the public and heavily marketed in TV commercials, emails, text messages all calling for users to take action, sometimes millions of people at once. As a result, these systems handled 1 billion page views and 500TB of data yearly across 3 data centers, over 1000 Linux based systems and AWS with the primary traffic being GET/POST requests. Having to handle that scale has exposed me to many different technologies, tools and lessons learned while building robust and secure platforms. Requirements included passing SOC2 audits and automatically handling DDoS attacks without interrupting service. With 65% of Fortune 500 businesses as clients and 24x7x365 support at 99.9% uptime, being on call meant extremely fast responses to incidents and professional detailed communication to senior leadership and all client teams. Finally, if someone asks a question or is curious about how something works, I will gladly teach them as time permits. I have had positive feedback on my teaching style from several team members across the company over the years and truly do enjoy it.
