A versatile, meticulous, and imaginative graphic designer, I have a strong background in traditional and digital illustration, as well as years of experience working with large-scale clients at both the agency and freelance levels. I was able to lay the foundation for my craft as an in-house designer, learning the importance of thinking on my feet, sticking to deadlines, and approaching projects as part of a team. I gained expertise in the nuances of print production and realized the true significance that design holds in sales and marketing efforts. Rebuilding my career in the freelance realm has enhanced my appreciation for and knowledge of social media integration and an online presence. I have gained the organizational aptitude necessary for managing multiple projects at once and honed communication skills that facilitate effective implementation of my clients’ design needs. My ability to take on diverse challenges within graphic design and illustration is what allows me to remain an engaged, thriving, and dedicated professional in this industry. I am continually on the lookout for new opportunities that allow me to express my passion for design, while also delivering innovative results-oriented solutions to my clients.

I work on the layout, formatting, and design of books, magazines, and other publications. I'm responsible for creating visually appealing and functional designs that enhance the readability and usability of the text. I work closely with authors, editors, and publishers to understand the content and intended audience of the book. I use my knowledge of typography, color theory, and graphic design to create a layout that complements the content and enhances the reading experience. I can work on both print and digital publications. I can design book covers, select fonts and page layouts, create illustrations and graphics, and formatting the text. A well-designed book can attract readers and help convey the author's message more effectively. I bring my creativity, technical expertise, and attention to detail to the process of book production, resulting in a final product that is both visually appealing and functional.

I do it all, but I always want to do more. Whether it's traditional or vector graphics; architectural design; layouts & mock-ups; icons, logos and brands; products and merchandise; or programming for web, mobile, games, apps, etc.; video editing, compositing, effects; sound effects and (a bit of) music; tutoring; or anything else, I've probably done it. If I haven't, I'm certainly willing to learn and probably curious about it anyway. I'm happy when you're happy. Hello, I’m Russ - strictly speaking, I’m a graphic designer. But in reality I’m a little bit more than just that. I’ve worked with a multitude of start-ups and established global brands alike to create and refine brands that their teams can be proud to represent, as well as having spent over thirteen years planning and producing a number of print titles; both magazines and books. A fastidious information gatherer, I implore you to tell me anything and everything. In terms of informing my work, that is - for legal reasons I should probably point out that I’m not a counsellor, but I am pretty easy to get along with, which helps when it comes to communicating efficiently. If you’re looking to launch a new venture and need the perfect brand, could do with freshening up your existing brand, are looking for editorial design work, illustration, or even copywriting (yes, I do that too) I’d love to hear from you. Put simply, I’m a professional puzzle solver. Except instead of pushing those tiny, weirdly-shaped interlocking pieces together I fill in the gaps with words and pictures.

At A Glance: Print Layout Design

Of the elements of graphic design, perhaps the one that sounds the simplest yet can be the most complex is layout design. Page layout is crucial to the success or failure of a document and isn’t merely a case of putting everything into the page and making sure the boxes fit. Page layout skills are complex and varied, including the arrangement of text and images in relation to the size and shape of the medium. While some industrial-level publications use automatic programs to create a standardized look to everything they publish, this degree of repetition is not appropriate or desirable for smaller-scale publications. A layout where everything looks the same is great for the phonebook but not for a magazine or brochure.

There are software packages designed to help with layout design, but most assume a working knowledge of the fundamental principles of graphic design. So if you don’t have these or feel you aren’t confident enough to take on this software, the answer is to hire print layout design professionals to work with you on the project.

From the earliest days of publication, there have been those who have the talent for arranging text and pictures on a page in a way that brings them together perfectly for the reader. Today, most of this work is done online; therefore, using an online workplace like Upwork means you can access the best of these talented people anywhere in the world. Rather than limiting yourself to those local to you, you are able to collaborate with the ideal partner, no matter where they are based.
