I have significant writing, research, and consulting skills and experience. During my 34 years as an attorney, writing legal documents was an essential part of my law practice. I regularly drafted a variety of legal documents, including without limitation, wills, trusts, powers of attorney, entity formation documents, operating agreements, securities offering documents, immigration petitions, and many other different types of contracts and agreements. It was critical that I drafted these documents in a manner consistent with my clients’ intentions. As a result, these documents had to be drafted precisely and clearly. Besides legal documents, as an attorney, I also regularly wrote letters to my clients and letters to opposing counsel or government officials, such as opinion letters on legal issues, and sales letters and proposal letters concerning possible work. In writing these letters, I had to be both informative and persuasive. My clients would commonly request my help in writing certain of their business documents, and I would “ghostwrite” for them such documents as business plans, loan applications, and solicitations to investors. From time to time, I would review the work of other attorneys and thereby developed experience in proofreading and editing (where necessary) their writings. I also wrote speeches, seminar materials, and numerous articles on various legal and business topics for a variety of audiences, including without limitation, sponsored by American Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association, Northwestern Mutual, Merrill Lynch, American Airlines, and Association of Legal Administrators. I also had extensive experience in researching both legal issues and other issues related to legal matters as an attorney. I am very qualified in the use of Lexis and Westlaw to research issues. Currently working as a consultant, I assist clients with writing and research projects, including without limitation, that I wrote blogs and researched and analyzed immigration issues for a company that helps people obtain visas and residence permits and citizenships in the United States and other countries around the world. My writing and research skills are very helpful to my clients as I provide business and wealth planning and other advice concerning the subjects of estate planning, asset protection planning, tax planning, series limited liability companies, corporations, and other business entities, securities, real estate, intellectual property, probate, immigration, business transactions, international business, and contracts. In connection with this work, I write a monthly newsletter. Apart from my work experience, I also have recent writing experience in helping my children with their high school essays, college application essays, and scholarship applications, and writing an obituary for a family member. I have always loved to write and truly get satisfaction from a well-crafted, coherent composition. I believe that written communication involves more than coding and emojis. I look forward to the opportunity to help others with their writing, research, and consulting needs.ProofreadingProposal WritingSales WritingWritingSpeech WritingBlog WritingArticle WritingLetter Writing - $45 hourly

Experience in journalism + special education isn't as divergent as it sounds. It makes for a unique set of skills that are ideal for projects requiring a high level of attention to detail and strong written communication. So what's that mean? *As someone with freelance writing experience, I'm well aware that I may need to mold my voice to fit a project. I can do that. I've written nonfiction articles across the genres, but with a particular emphasis on health, tourism, marketing, local politics, education, and the occasional dog wedding. *As someone with a growing portfolio of copywriting experience, particularly in the niche areas of B2B, tourism, marketing, real estate and health/wellness, I'm ready to not only fit my writing to the tone of your business, but create copy that is easy-to-read, SEO-friendly, and optimized for the web. *As someone with teaching experience, particularly in the field of special education, I have patience for days, and an attention to detail unparalleled by those who have never worked in fields where there's a constant fear of being sued. *As someone with staff writing and editing experience, I thrive on deadlines, while still maintaining a high level of professionalism and accuracy. *And, as a lover of words and all things grammar, I take great pride in making a piece of work the best it can be, whether that's my own or a client's. This is all very intriguing, right? By the way, if you're looking for a lighter touch, I'm also the creator of a humor and travel blog of my own. This may not mean much to you, but it has forced me to become well-versed in SEO strategies and the idea of marketing myself as a brand, two areas I'm happy to provide support in as well. Hi, I'm Cara! I'm a developmental fiction editor. I love working with authors and creative people! I have a decade of experience providing developmental editing. I am happy to edit any length of story. I am a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and strive to uphold their standards of professionalism and integrity. ----- How does developmental editing differ from copyediting? Developmental (sometimes called substantive) editing doesn't focus on correcting grammar errors, but rather takes a deep look into the story itself. A developmental editor checks for story flow, effectiveness, point of view, passive language, consistency, and areas where your story can be expanded on or polished so that it stays in the minds and hearts of readers. A copyeditor corrects technical details of a manuscript's writing content, such as grammar and spelling. These edits ensure your manuscript is ready for publishing or to send to an agent. Unlike developmental edits, story/plot content is not typically addressed during a copyedit. ----- Which type of editing do you need? Your book or story may require one more than the other, depending on myriad factors. Many stories require both services. If you're curious about the types of editing I offer and which might best serve your needs, please reach out to me!ProofreadingCopy EditingFictionChicago Manual of StyleFantasyDevelopmental EditingBook EditingScience FictionRomanceLiteratureWriting Critique - $35 hourly

I’m a detail-oriented perfectionist with a passion for language, which makes me the ideal copy editor or proofreader for your magazine/resume/website/pizza menu. I have a BFA in creative writing with a focus on poetry, so I know words matter, and whether I'm writing or editing, I bring that care and dedication to every project. Pro-oxford comma, but if that’s not your style we can still make it work! I’m flexible enough to have thrived in work environments as varied as a hotel kitchen and a theater tech booth, and while most of my editing experience is in Chicago Style, I’ve worked with a variety of style guides, and even created a house style guide for internal and audience-facing documents. I was raised in Scotland and now live in the United States; my fluency in both British and American English is an asset if you're working on both sides of the pond. I have four years of editing and proofreading experience, including literary magazines, interview transcripts, and image captions, and I'm comfortable working with Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite.ProofreadingCopy EditingGraphic DesignWritingMicrosoft OfficeGoogle WorkspaceCreative Writing - $49 hourly

I've been at this writing game for a long, long time--over 40 years, to be exact. I've won national writing contests, published books with small presses, been the "go-to" editor for fast-turnaround "quick books" at a major publisher, and, of course, helped dozens of individual writers to become better authors. I'm the pickiest of the picky, a crackerjack speller, and The Grammarian About Whom Your Mother Warned You. I do need to say here, however, because there have been MANY clients who don't understand this: I AM NOT A GHOSTWRITER. I have done ghostwriting in the past, but I don't do it anymore. So if you're looking for someone to write books for you, under your name...please .look elsewhere. :-) Other than that...if you want the best TLC your book can get, look no further. As a Senior Professional in Human Resources, I’ve seen how my insight about therapists and about business helps business owners when they are also therapists. On and off from the time I was a teenager in the 1980s, I’ve seen therapists. For tune-ups of sorts. Now I specialize in Human Resources for mental health practices around the US. Here’s what a current mental health client-owner-founder-CEO had to say: “Adding Diane to our team has been an absolutely amazing shift for our practice! Having an HR focused set of eyes that can help our staff understand that we are a business is invaluable. Recently I observed as she terminated one of our clinicians. She handled it so professionally and effectively I was absolutely awe struck. If you don't have a dedicated HR person, and even if you do, consider adding Diane to your team.” Here's more about me… I work from experience in employee relations, payroll, benefits, work visa acquisition, compliance training, continuing education, and diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Since 2015 I have worked directly with employees and their CEOs and VPs on all matters of HR and Payroll. Let’s chat about your mental health practice and how I can… • Help therapists understand how the timeliness and content of their session notes impact your business. • Help practice owners/therapists implement inclusion after therapists of color, for example, are hired. • Show therapists how to have disciplinary conversations with direct reports without defaulting to providing therapy. • Deliver termination/firing/layoff to therapists for you. • Meet with your therapists as needed to help them implement their self-care. Thanks for having a look at my profile. I invite you to reach out to me to discuss the HR needs of your mental health business.ProofreadingBenefits LawHuman Resources ConsultingWordPressMilitaryContent WritingSearch Engine OptimizationEmployment LawHuman Resource ManagementTechnical EditingHuman Resource Information System - $90 hourly

I believe the role of an editor is to help writers express themselves as clearly and eloquently as possible. This requires honesty, sensitivity, excellent communication, a collaborative mindset, and an obsessive attention to detail, and I'd like to think I embody all of these traits. But don't take my word for it - my 100% job success score should tell you how my wonderful clients have felt about their experience, and the feelings are mutual. Beyond my reviews here on Upwork, many of my clients include me in their acknowledgments, which is deeply gratifying. One author even gave me top billing when he released his political thriller: “My sincere thanks to my editor, Lisa Messinger, who turned this from a rough manuscript with lots of sharp edges, into a smooth, polished work.” Variety is the spice of life, and that holds true in editing as well. Learning new things from the wide range of content on which I work is for me one of the best things about being an editor. I'm always looking to forge long-term relationships and am happy to work on any type of content, though my primary focus is manuscripts: *Fiction, from short stories to full-length novels (all sub-genres): adult, YA, middle grade *Non-fiction: memoir, historical, self-help/personal empowerment I am passionate about my work, and consider it a privilege to be able to employ my experience, skills and expertise to help writers realize their goal of creating compelling content. You can trust that I will be as invested as you are in the quality of your final draft. Reach out to me and let's get started. From 2007 to 2017 I was the owner of the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography, which published 40 books for total distribution of over 20,000 copies. Along the way, CCLaP's books won or were finalists for a half-dozen awards, including the Pushcart Prize, the Lambda Award for LGBTQ literature, and the Independent Publisher Book Award; and the center itself was named one of the 10 best indie presses in the United States by both BookRiot.com and Poets & Writers magazine. Now I bring that same award-winning deep editing experience to your own self-published or small-press manuscript, helping you hone it with a fine knife into the best book it can possibly be. I specialize in "developmental" editing (also known as "content editing"), taking a big-picture look at your manuscript and identifying strengths and weaknesses in plot, character, pacing, style and tone, and giving you no-bones advice about how "publishable" it currently is. I also regularly do copy editing (also known as "line editing"), focusing in on a word-by-word basis to correct mistakes in what my industry calls GUPS (grammar, usage, punctuation and spelling). Other services include simple "post-production proofreading" for typos and missing punctuation; complete rewriting of entire sections of text for better clarity; specialized academic work using the Chicago Manual of Style, APA and Bluebook; and short documents like memos, web articles, website copy and promotional material for enterprise and other corporate clients. I believe in being transparent and consistent with my fees, so here are my rates in advance: Simple proofreading for typos: 0.5 cents per word Developmental editing: 1 cent per word Copy editing: 1 cent per word Developmental + copy edit for the same document: 1.5 cents per word Rewriting text into a more readable form: 1.5 cents per word Doctoral dissertations: 2 cents per word Journalism: 3 cents per word Enterprise clients: 5 cents per word All of these rates are also open for discussion and best offers, so just drop me a line if you'd like to discuss the subject more. See my portfolio section at the bottom of the page for a broad selection of testimonials from authors I've worked with as a freelancer, links to some of the books CCLaP still has for sale at Amazon, and praise my books have garnered over the years from such publications as Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, the Chicago Tribune, HTMLGIANT, and more. I'm happy to say that I've had a top-rated designation here at Upwork (given to the top 10 percent of all freelancers based on client satisfaction scores) since January 2021 without a break, and have consistently maintained a job success score between 95% and 100% that entire time too. I look forward to hearing from you. *Proud member of the American Copy Editors Society* *Proud member of the Romance Writers of America* *Certification, Academic Copy Editing, Poynter Institute for Media Studies* AI PLEDGE: I promise that all work I complete for clients has been, and will always be, accomplished using only my human brain and ten human fingers, never using AI bots, Grammarly, or other software options. I have over five years' experience copy editing and proofreading professionally. Most of my work consists of the following: - Website copy, including SEO content - eBooks - Mobile apps - Marketing funnels - Academic papers - Articles - Resumes/cover letters - Transcripts - School curricula/online courses - White papers - Blogs - Short stories/poems - Letters I've worked with clients from all walks of life, including non-native English speakers. Most of them have great ideas they want to share with the world but lack the writing skills to convey them. I love improving the word choice, sentence structure, and flow of my clients' writing while preserving their unique voices. I make thorough edits instead of simply fixing mistakes. I strengthen my clients' writing by optimizing word choice and sentence structure, organizing the flow of ideas, eliminating redundancy, maintaining a consistent style, and more. I use the "track changes" feature so my clients can see all the adjustments I made to their work and accept or reject them as they see fit. I've been writing all my life, and editing copy since high school when I was a yearbook contributor and editor for my school's newspaper. I have a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and have taken creative writing and journalism courses. I'm familiar with APA, MLA, and Chicago Style, and I often use clients' custom style guides.ProofreadingSEO ContentCopy EditingWriting - $35 hourly

Top Skills: PROOFREADING/EDITING (essays, manuscripts, online content, etc.) SCREENPLAY/SCRIPT EDITING (TV scripts, feature screenplays, and shorts) COPYEDITING (articles, blog posts, marketing material, etc.) My excellent writing skills and grasp of language arts stem from my undergraduate education in an honors program where I studied humanities and literature. Earning all A's in law school writing classes, drafting hundreds of legal documents, and writing award-winning teleplays and feature-length screenplays have caused my sharp grammar skills to become second nature. I have an eagle eye for proofreading and editing and am familiar with several word processing programs and marketing funnels, including Word, Google Docs, Final Draft, Fade In, Stripo, Buffer, and Pagefly. I'm happy to provide deliverables that either show or don't show my revisions; my clients can choose one way or receive both! I have written and edited two novels--the first two volumes in THE TEDDY BEAR CHRONICLES crime thriller series for adults. I am comfortable with proofreading/editing both short and lengthy written materials. Furthermore, I am a former English tutor... I have four years of experience teaching students of all ages excellent grammar and proofreading skills. They all substantially improved their grades while working with me. It was a wonderful experience to see them succeed. Lastly, I proofread and edited my scripts, which have earned high praise (winner, finalist, nominee, and semi-finalist) in several film festivals and contests between 2019 and 2023, including Underground Indie Film Festival, Burbank International FF, Big Apple, HollyShorts, Flicker's Rhode Island, Hollywood Horrorfest, and Fade In Awards.
