I recently completed a Ph.D. in Environmental Psychology, during which time I achieved a portfolio of published academic work and became skilled across multiple different aspects of the social science research process. I am able to proofread and edit academic manuscripts as well as more general texts, ensuring that they are ready for submission or publication. I can also assist with conducting literature reviews (systematic or non-systematic), as well as designing research studies and conducting data analysis using R Studio. I have recently returned to full-time work, and so have limited time available for freelance work. I still have a small amount of time available on evenings and weekends, and so am happy to be contacted about quick projects up to 10 hours, or longer projects without immediate deadlines. Note: I am currently only be able to be contacted through Upwork messaging, and cannot facilitate video or voice calls. I am a writer and researcher with over a decade's experience of both in academia and in corporate communications. I have recently gained my PhD in Modern Political History at Teesside University. My thesis, titled Cumulative Extremism: A Comparative Historical Analysis, examined the development of violent conflicts through a comparison of several historical case studies: the contests between British fascist and anti-fascist groups in the interwar period and from 1967 to 1979 and 1980 to 2000; the Troubles in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to mid-1970s; and Islamist extremists and the far-right counter-jihad movement in Britain since 2009. Routledge recently published it in their high-profile ‘Fascism and the Far Right’ book series. I have also published a journal article on the Northern Irish Troubles, and two book chapters on the British far right in the twentieth century. Furthermore, during my time at Teesside (both as a PhD student and as a researcher), I gained experience of writing and running Prevent training, as well as writing research grant applications. In terms of the former, my doctoral supervisors and I wrote Prevent training sessions on the far right and ran it for groups of police officers, Prevent workers, social workers and local council employees. Specifically, I wrote and delivered lectures on the activities, aims and ideologies of the most prominent local far-right organisations. In terms of the latter, I have also had the opportunity to work on writing a range of research grants under the supervision of more senior academics. These have included smaller research grants, such as for the recent tender by the Home Office’s Commission of Countering Extremism, as well as a more substantial Leverhulme grant application. Since the completion of my doctorate, I have worked as a researcher on the Challenging Youth Racism project; a joint endeavour between Teesside University and the charity Humankind that provided anti-racist educational workshops for young people in the North East of England. In this role it was my responsibility to write workshops on terrorism, radicalisation and far-right extremism. I also co-wrote a report that was launched at a conference at Teesside University. The report was then referenced in the Home Office’s recent Challenging Hateful Extremism report, where our project was also positively described as an example of good practice. Outside of Academia I have also gained skills and experience which would make me an invaluable writer and researcher. From 2015 to 2017 I worked as a freelance research associate for the Institute for National Policy and Ethnic Relations Studies at the European Centre for Tolerance (ECT), based in Latvia. My work for this organisation included writing reports on racism, hate crimes, and the actions and impact of nationalist and religious extremists. Further, I attended their conferences to disseminate my research and collaborated with an international team of ECT researchers to co-author three reports on hate crime in Europe. Prior to my PhD, I worked as a corporate communications professional: I spent eighteen months working as a Communications Assistant at the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Science Technology Laboratory (Dstl), and over two years working with the criminal justice charity Pact (the Prison Advice and Care Trust) as the Marketing Communications Officer. At Pact I carried out all the Communications work: Press/Media, Internal, Marketing and Digital. This means that my duties included being the first point of contact for media enquiries, facilitating press coverage of our work, managing the staff intranet, writing and sub-editing articles for the intranet and for company literature, updating our social network sites, and maintaining the Pact websites. I have gained valuable experience in writing for the web, and in developing websites. I have experience of, and am competent in, the use of many content management systems which the various websites and intranets I’ve managed have been hosted on. At Dstl my role involved managing the content for the intranet, extranet and website; supporting the Press Officer with media enquiries and with Press / Filming days; writing the weekly staff e-newsletter; writing articles for the in-house magazine; and any support work for the rest of the communications team as and when they needed it. I am interested in undertaking any short- or long-term projects.
