"I fix computers" is often all people need to know about my work! I've been fixing them for over 20 years and after my first tech support job I started my business because I wanted to help people with my talent and do so properly, proactively and honestly. I work with Windows and Linux computers, and occasionally Macs, as well as mobiles, tablets and "Smart" devices; broadband services and Internet Service Providers; as well as domain names, Web and email hosting, and although I'm not a Web developer I've worked harmoniously alongside many to manage the plumbing. I even service an asparagus grading system. It's not often I wear wellington boots at work, but that barn gets wet. Customers have always told me that I talk to them in a way they can understand, with a patient and friendly demeanour, which I maintain even after wrestling with Internet Service Providers over the phone for hours. Don't ask me how; it's a trade secret. I prefer to understand a problem whenever possible and try to fix it at the root to prevent it from recurring, but won't deny that the line "Have you tried turning it on and off again?" is sometimes a valid fix. I probably shouldn't admit that, but I did say I was honest; I even read the manual in front of people sometimes. Anyone who's worked with me knows they can contact me with something they feel is silly or "stupid" and be re-assured that they're neither, or they can have a complex problem that they are not sure how to explain, and I'll give them the time and understanding to work towards fixing it. I am diligent in my work and it's not unusual that I spot problems that a customer hasn't even mentioned yet, which makes me appear to be a wizard. I'm not really. I am a firm proponent of open source software and standards and whilst I'm not a programmer, give back to this crucial industry with documentation, thoughtful feedback and offering help in user forums. My business has supported local charities and good causes over the years with free or reduced tech support as well as habitat management, litter picking and event participation (a fancy way of saying "charity bike rides"). I also support my local area by drinking a lot of coffee and eating a lot of cake in their independent cafes and pubs. I don't just live my life attached to a computer. I love to ride my bike - my main means of transport - and enjoy astronomy, reading and writing poetry, social history, walking in my picturesque local area and am amazed that I still have 2700 characters left in this text box because, as my email signature reads: "I didn't have time to write a short email, so I wrote a long one instead." --Mark TwainRemote Management
