I have the desired qualifications to work on drug discovery and development projects with B. Pharm and M. Pharm (Pharmaceutical Chemistry) degrees from India and a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. By working in both academia and pharmaceutical industry settings, I have acquired extensive experience in the areas of organic and medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, and structural and molecular biology. My unique combination of qualifications, multidisciplinary skills, extensive experience and model values of respect, teamwork, high performance and integrity make me an ideal candidate for this role. During my PhD studies at the University of Queensland (UQ), I synthesised analogues of rivastigmine, a drug currently being used for Alzheimer’s disease treatment, tested those analogues in various in vitro and in vivo Alzheimer’s drug discovery assays and checked their stability using HPLC and NMR. During my postdoctoral fellow role at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) (2017-2020), I worked on various industrial pharmaceutical drug discovery projects, including developing novel antibacterial and antiviral molecules. I isolated bioactive constituents from plants and confirmed the structures of the molecules by NMR and MS. To improve the potency; I examined the chemistry of the compounds and successfully synthesised analogues of those molecules with improved potency. I have worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a couple of years, and therefore, I am well-versed in good manufacturing practices in the therapeutic goods industry. In my career, I have synthesised various biologically active molecules, including active pharmaceutical agents, and performed biological assays. I have collaborated with other researchers and external stakeholders at each position to answer the research questions and resolve complex issues. For example, during my PhD, I collaborated with a professor from France to get data from X-ray crystallography studies on newly synthesised cholinesterase inhibitors in complex with cholinesterase enzymes. These studies answered the mode of action of my newly synthesised cholinesterase inhibitors. In my current position with UQ, I have been involved in analysing bioavailability, toxicology, and biodistribution data of peptides in mice. Also, I have been involved in drafting competitive grant applications, reports and manuscripts. Overall, at each position, I have been involved in drug discovery projects, checking the quality and stability of the compounds using various analytical techniques, drafting reports and giving presentations on the obtained data. I have always provided strategic advice and technical experience to my team members and colleagues. For example, during my postdoctoral studies at QUT, one of the PhD students needed help synthesising polyphenolic flavanone derivatives. I had previous expertise in synthesising polyphenolic derivatives using the orthogonal protecting groups' strategy. Therefore, I advised him to use the orthogonal protecting group strategy to synthesise flavanone derivatives. He used my advice and then successfully synthesised polyphonic flavanone derivatives. I enjoy working as a part of a team, and it is one of the most critical aspects for the smooth running of a department and company, as teamwork helps build success. When people work together as an efficient team, tasks can be completed quickly and smoothly. I have always shared good professional relations with my colleagues. I often volunteer to assist/help other team members in meeting their deadlines. I am also a quick learner and can implement individual work plans, including setting tasks and priorities.
