After Covid forced science online I found my calling on the computational side of condensed matter, where I can explore the physics I am interested in with meticulous control and arbitrary precision. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics at The University of Washington in Seattle, under the advisement of Gerald T. Seidler and John J. Rehr. My research centers around x-ray spectroscopy as a powerful tool for explaining all sorts of atomic, electronic, and material properties. My current project is a first-principles approach to core-to-core X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES), focusing on highly correlated 3d-transition metals. I work extensively with Python (numpy, scipy, pandas, matplotlib, tensorflow, ect) and Mathematica for data analysis, with some moderate use of Lua and C++ for scripting and development of new electronic structure software. Hello, My name is Jeffrey Hyde, I’m a career laboratory technologist looking to transition to a career as a freelance scientific writer and manuscript editor. I have significant experience with editing scientific papers, and was a writer and primary editor for each of my published papers. However, I currently have no experience as a freelance editor, and at the present moment I am more interested in earning referrals and testimonials from clients than I am in earning any specific amount of money. In order to establish myself in this line of work and earn my first referrals, I intend to offer my services at a steep discount for a period. I will perform my first five paper edits at an 80% discount from what I intend to charge as my normal per-paper fee. My next five paper edits after that will receive a 60% discount, then the next five will receive a 40% discount, and so on. Over my twelve-year career in science, I’ve been listed as an author on fifteen published peer-reviewed papers. These papers have covered the topics of addiction and craving, spinal cord injury repair, ultrasound localization microscopy, and age-related changes in blood vessel integrity. For the entirety of my time working in lab science I participated in manuscript development and editing. In the last seven and a half years, this role became a primary responsibility of mine, as I became the primary editor for all paper and grant application drafts for two researchers at the University of Washington. In my role at the UW, my editing work was primarily done on the behalf of non-native English speakers, and I have significant experience optimizing the language of scientific paper drafts written by non-native English speakers
