I am a professional article and blog writer, novelist, and short story/essay writer. My Process
Before composing, I consider the organization of the whole work. This holds true regardless of length. In longer works, it is important to consider the organization of each chapter, scene, or article segment. By knowing where I am going as the writer, I am able to take the reader from beginning to end in a seamless flow, as if the reader is enjoying a scenic ride on a well-constructed, well-marked road.
As I progress on a work, I give special attention to the structure of paragraphs and sentences. Each paragraph is considered as a group of related sentences. These sentences work in concert to create the logical structure of the paragraph, and I take care to create a smooth transition between paragraphs. Sentences should be complete and unified. During proofreading, I take care to coordinate and subordinate ideas within a sentence in the most effective, clear manner. Strong choices in modifier use and placement, predication, and other stylistic choices enhance the overall effectiveness of a work.
Finally, editing and proofreading are indispensable elements of my writing process. Creative ideas always come during beginning drafts. Because of this, editing requires tweaking the structure of the work to make new ideas fit the text like a glove. Proofreading for smaller issues like punctuation, spelling, and grammar are key to creating polished work. My proofreading goal is to always increase the ease of reading. This requires ensuring that each comma, hyphen, semicolon, etc. are the most effective choice and most effectively placed.
