The Generalist: If you are looking for a freelancer in any area there are many options for standard tasks. There are are specialists within these categories. Sometimes you need a specialized task completed and you are looking for a specialist within that field: options can narrow very quickly. Therefore place the success of your project in the hands of a freelancer that provides the best combination of experience and value. My specialization is Audio. And because I’ve made my living in this area for a long time my skills touch upon many of the areas that are directly connected with audio. in some ways it may be better to list the audio skills that I do not have a wealth of hands-on experience. For example, a popular one right now is Game Audio. I’m not a gamer and never have been so a gaming project is not where i feel comfortable. However, all the details around the audio production for gaming applications is what I am all about. In which areas have I worked in that are directly connected to to audio and sound? Podcasting: I’ve been creating podcasts since 2007. For myself and for professional organizations. Every aspect form recording and production, writing and directing voice talent: publishing to iTunes and Spotify. Audio Books: Recording of the human voice is something that I find myself doing in so many situations. There are so many ways to do this that I cannot enumerated the variations. But suffice it to say the application or destination of the final project is the key to understanding how to do this correctly. I am fully conversant with the various standards that have developed over the years from the ACX specification to the internationally accepted standards of LUFs. Recording live musical performances. I cut my teeth as a recording engineer. Recording live Opera performances for radio broadcast. Imagine the recording a moving target accompanied by a live orchestra with special effects. The audience for this specialized task is very discerning so that the production value of the final product requires the capture of the finest nuances of orchestral timbre with the dynamic range that can be louder than a Rock Concert. There is no exaggeration here. Movies: Audio Post production for movies is another one of those specialist audio tasks that many audio engineers never chance to try. Game audio is a subset of this experience but with added complexity. I have four movie credits to my name as a direct result of my Opera experience. And luckily it broadened the scope of my experience to include: Sound Design and Motion Graphics: Using the entire range of Adobe Products for projects that require 2D and 3D visual effects that are Animated to Audio. Visual Effects and Animated 3D Motion Graphics: Using Autodesk Maya, After Effects and Autodesk Flame As I move forward my current passion is immersive audio as it relates to story telling. Surely there is an application to audio books and podcasting. The market is not there yet but I will be there once it catches on. Award winning audio engineer.
