Clarity-first editing: I help your readers see your message.
"Wes is the editor you want for your scientific paper: He's thoughtful, diligent, and quick. He caught unclear areas of our paper which the reviewers missed. I highly recommend him." - researcher in medicine and machine learning
I specialize in editing academic and technical material as well as nonfiction books and business documents of all kinds. I will thoroughly review your work for issues with spelling, grammar, consistency, clarity, readability, and flow. See below for more details.
I have been writing and editing technical and business material for over thirty-five years. I will apply this experience to your project to help ensure your words are presented in the best light.
"Wes is brilliant! He edited my work fast and with great care. And these are two things that don't come together often. He is also very pleasant to work with." - political scientist
For those who are considering inviting me to bid on your job: First, thank you! I appreciate invites and accept many of them. Please be aware that I am unable to offer same-day delivery and often schedule several weeks in advance. Advance planning is helpful to reserve a spot on my calendar.
I primarily work in these formats and programs: Word, LaTeX (using Overleaf/ShareLaTeX), PDF, InDesign, PowerPoint, and Google Slides.
"Always great working with Wes. Clear quotes, fast and accurate work." - academic research institute
What you can expect when you work with me for copyediting:
• During our initial discussion, I will ask to review the material. I will give you a firm quote as well as my earliest available start and delivery dates. Those dates may change depending on how long it is from this discussion to the contract offer, but the quote will not change unless the material changes substantially.
• Before I accept the contract, you will have the firm quote, my expected start date, and a committed delivery date.
• As I work on your document, I will keep you updated on progress and expected completion date.
• I will edit your text for grammar, punctuation, spelling, usage, clarity, consistency, readability, and flow.
• If there are high-level structural issues, I will call them out and offer suggestions.
• I'll verify spelling of names, places, products, and companies.
• If English is not your native language, I will ensure your writing reads as if it were written by a native speaker.
• If there are figures, I will verify that they are consistent with the accompanying text (including captions) and edit any text inside the figures. I'll also call out any clarity issues with the figures.
• If there are tables, I'll edit the text (including captions) and ensure that the tables are consistent with the discussion in the body of the text.
• If there are equations, I'll verify they are consistent with surrounding text and will call out any issues I see with the math. I'll verify symbols are defined and consistent.
• If you require, I can format your document to meet submission requirements or house styles. I can also verify and format citations and references. These services carry additional charges.
• Once I return the document to you, I will answer any questions and concerns you have and will review updated passages within reason (and I'm pretty reasonable). Reviews of substantial rewrites may carry an additional charge.
