Well to be very frank with you mass mailing is a very complex process and depends on a lot of things and yes it’s a long, ongoing and relies on trial and error basis thing. The Process: When a reputable server receives an email they check the following (brief); 1. Criteria 1 - IP Reputation: a. Is your IP blacklisted by SBL, XBL or PBL (collectively known as the 'Zen' block list)? b. SPF - is it from the designated sender? c. DKIM - Whether the message is digitally signed? d. A PTR or rDNS exist? e. DMARC being used? (spoof-able)? f. Feedback Loops and resolution? g. Bounce rate management? h. Un-subscribe option available? i. Subject and Email Body standards? 2. Criteria 2 – Tailoring the rate of sending - The most complex part. a. The rate at which you are sending. b. The domain that you are sending from. c. The IP that you are sending from. d. IP and domain name go hand in hand, you cannot cheat them by having multiple IPs pointing to same domain, will still reject. e. Gmail, Hotmail and other allow if your IP Reputation is good. f. Yahoo will give you real tough time, that’s where you would need to have multiple IPs with multiple domains and sub-domains. g. Will talk about multiple sub-domain strategy later. 3. Hundreds n thousands of emails every week. a. Not a big deal. b. Postfix can very easily be tailored let me share my current strategy (briefly). c. I have created separate rules for each domain like Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and tens of others for not just sending but logging as well. d. It SIMULTANEOUSLY sends to EACH destination with different rates (keeps increasing or decreasing based on logs – trial and error). e.
