I was introduced to the world wide web in 1996 when the new technology was presented to a gathering of media and marketing professionals in Hong Kong. Its potential as a marketing medium was immediately apparent and it was not long before I was working with a designer to get a company website online. Soon after that in 1997, I became Director of Communications for a hotel group in Thailand. Prior to my arrival they had commissioned a very expensive corporate website. Though it looked beautiful, it got no visitors at all. My research into the site's lack of traffic was my introduction to SEO. I discovered that some web designers are only too happy to take your money to create a very pretty website without including even the most rudimentary elements of search engine optimization. In my experience, even today, more than twenty years later, not much has changed in that regard. In 1999 I joined a start-up internet company as Director of Content. It went from strength to strength and within its first year had already garnered millions of dollars in angel investment from Sweden and Australia. At the time, my boss gave my work on content development a good deal of credit for attracting the investors. I love doing SEO and website content work. I still love the potential the internet has to put small business companies right up there next to corporate giants and it still bothers me when web designers take money for a website that will never do what it was meant to do - attract web traffic and increase sales.
