A social, behavioural and health sciences researcher with a background in psychology and over 16 years of experience, including 10 post-PhD, for longest at the University of Cambridge. My current role blends working on research projects, writing/ editing projects, and psychotherapy/ counselling/ coaching work. I am also a published author ("House Moving Therapy" - a book on using the physical clutter you confront during a house move to sort through the emotional mess that lies behind it as well as a book on the quest for one's true home). Degrees in psychology (BA, MA in Clinical and Counselling Psychology, MA in Work and Organizational Psychology), philosophy (MA in Philosophy and Ethics of Mental Health, PhD in the Philosophy of Science) and English language and literature (minor). My most recent long-term research projects have been with the World Health Organization (editor of a special collection of peer-reviewed articles on the lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic), with Acas, the UK Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service, which deals with workplace relationships and conflict (analysis of public consultations on flexible working and predictable working), and with the Health Innovation Network (evaluation of an intra-organisational anti-racism project). My favourite research topics and contexts are complex, dynamic, messy, chaotic, dramatic ... I am committed to doing research which brings meaning, clarity and hope where they are most difficult to find and sustain. I've worked in digital health; global and humanitarian health; health systems recovery and resilience; palliative and end of life care; research ethics; military veterans' health; workplace well-being; organizational transformation; evidence synthesis and knowledge management ... I also do independent research on relationships, love, break-ups and conflict resolution, but this is still in book drafts which are a work in progress! I'm also infinitely curious and interested in engaging with new topics in the social, behavioural and health sciences, so do get in touch if some of my work is of interest but you don't see your topic! I am committed to writing up research and enabling others to write theirs in clear, accessible and engaging way. My 10 key papers have been downloaded, as full texts, over 84,000 times. Methodologically, I work with: qualitative approaches (interviews, focus groups, ethnographic work); quantitative methods and sources of data (surveys, audits of routinely collected administrative data); pictorial and other arts-based approaches; textual analysis methods; mixed methods research; theory-based approaches (e.g. realist evaluation and synthesis, ethical analysis, etc.); secondary research, etc. My PhD was on methods of research synthesis, of which the systematic review is an exemplar case. I have also developed a rich personal arsenal of what I call ‘rigorous shortcuts’ or ‘shortcuts to rigour’ – tools that enable maximum rigour when we don’t have the time or resources for the ideal study design. My work as a psychologist/ counsellor draws both on my research studies and lived experience. I have been trained in the psychodynamic tradition, with specialisations in psychodrama and arts therapy. I often suggest writing exercises and other forms of creative endeavours as a path to awareness and healing. I listen with the whole of my being but also engage in dynamic conversation with clients in which I may challenge and push them and also share my own experiences. As a psychologist who is also a researcher and critical thinker, I often end up doing hardcore uncomfortable thinking and digging for truths with my clients when the standard psychological advice and approaches just won't cut through the existential fog we are trying to lift together.
