Translation and proofreading require systematic training, not every untrained polyglot freelancer can do it well. I'm a registered language service provider at JAT (Japan Association of Translators), affording my service more reliability and trustworthiness. Having ten years of experience in translation, I am a translator at Microsoft and was a translator at Sony. I’m in the Talent Clouds of Microsoft and Bloomberg (shown on the Talent Clouds section of this profile page). I bring the rigorous translation Standard Operating Procedure I learned at the world-renowned corporations to every freelance project I take on.
When I translate, I put accuracy first, try to retain 100% of the meaning of the original text, while trying to make the translation sound as natural as possible in the target language. My specialties are science, technology (esp. crypto, IT, life sciences), and law (esp. contracts).

I have native-level proficiency in two Sinospheric languages, i.e., Japanese and Chinese, and one Germanic language, i.e., English. I have rudimentary knowledge of Korean and Vietnamese which are also Sinospheric, sharing some 60% of lexicon with Japanese and Chinese. I also have basic knowledge of several Romance languages. Besides Japan, I have lived in the US, England, Wales, and China, plus the linguistically curious land of Singapore where English, Chinese, and a pidgin called Singlish are used in tandem as a result of British colonization and Chinese immigration.
I studied English composition in the US, and stylistically my English translations adhere to the conventions set out in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (aka APA style) - readers would not be annoyed by non-standard punctuations and capitalizations commonly found in non-native speakers' writings. I scored 113 out of 120 in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). A score of 100 on this test satisfies the English proficiency requirement of Harvard Law School admissions.
As a linguist, I've done ethnolinguistic fieldwork in places where the local languages are completely opaque to me: Serbia (language: Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian), Malaysia (language: Malay), Thailand (language: Thai), and remote villages in Shandong, Xi'an, etc. of China where many locals are unable to speak Mandarin Chinese but only dialects of Chinese not mutually intelligible with Mandarin. From these exotic experiences, I realized how difficult building rapport becomes and how strange life can get when linguistic communication breaks down. That gave me a refreshed view of the value of translation.
For me, translation is more of an art than a job. I had my first contact with linguistics when I discovered Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct while I was a freshman in college wandering in the school library. Later I gained a deeper understanding of languages through formal training in linguistics, analytic philosophy, and cultural anthropology. Abstract language is an important reason why we are so much cognitively ahead of other mammals who are genetically and anatomically so akin to us. With regard to translation, the fact that symbols as disparate as “Languages are amazing”, 「げんごとはふしぎだ」 and “语言是不可思议的” can convey the same idea never fails to awe no matter how much I reflect upon it. I take great pleasure in this amazing endeavor of translation.
