I have a client who has a 25m Paddle Steamer that uses a 15 Horse Power Boiler to operate the vessel, this large boiler operates the paddle wheels and the vessel travels at around 9 knots.
Due to the expense of operating the Boiler they want to install 2 electric motors to drive the paddle wheels.
I need to make sure the electric motors will be strong enough to operate the wheels and propel the vessel to 8 or 9 knots.
The currently have a 56kw Generator on board and because of this they purchased 2 x 11 KW electric motors to drive the wheels, but I am not sure if this will work.
The paddle wheels are 3.6m in diameter with 9 floats (paddles) that are 1.8m long x .3m wide in area. The vessel weight is 100 Tonnes.
Can you make a calculation of the size of what the electric motors should be?
I have attached the electrical drawing that I have made of what they have proposed and the electric motors that they have proposed, and pics of the vessel and the paddle wheels. Also there is a spread sheet in regards to the resistance of the vessel.
