I need assistance migrating from roaming profiles to redirected folders on a Windows 2003 domain.
* Roaming profiles cause slow logins for users with multi-gig profiles.
* Huge amounts of local disk space can be consumed when multiple users have large roaming profiles
* By default, user profile directories on the server cannot be accessed by the administrator
* Some users insist on logging into multiple machines, which complicates syncing their roaming profiles with the server.
I support one site with redirected folders and it runs more smoothly. I want to convert an existing site.
I need assistance documenting a procedure my techs can use to 1) convert existing user accounts to redirected folders, and 2) cause all newly created user accounts to implement redirected folders.
We did this with a single account over a year ago and it works fine, but we didn't get the instructions from our contractor.
The server is Windows SBS 2003 and the workstations are XP Pro and Win 7 Pro. I can get you remote access to the server if required.
The goal is to:
*) Switch a few user accounts from roaming to redirected such that the user never notices a change.
*) Ensure that all user files are accessible to the administrator on the server
*) Exclude any undesirable folders (like personal music & videos)
*) Ensure that all new user accounts get created with redirected folders
*) Document the process so my junior techs can implement for all existing users or at other client sites.
We are an established IT support company with a stable client base. I handle most of the high-level work and my junior techs handle day-to-day problems. I prefer to have a few skilled contractors available who can handle specialized jobs (Active Directory, Exchange, Cisco, VMWare, etc) more efficiently than I can.
We have a few regular contractors we call on a ongoing basis, but I could use another expert in Windows Server and Active Directory. It helps to have several people located in different parts of the world (and time zones) to handle jobs evenings and at night.
