Here is a case study for better understanding of situation:
Elle Sport, a large Australian retail firm, has around 50 outlets, and is currently seeking a more efficient distribution system from suppliers. Among manufacturing suppliers is Trento, which produces sport shoes (women). Trento supplies on a weekly basis to Elle’s Sport outlets and also to many other retail outlets. Trento is now evaluating its entire logistics/distribution channels in order to effectively meet customers’ needs.
Trento is increasingly finding difficult to cater to Elle Sport’s requirements of 10 days delivery from the date of order. The manufacturing of shoes, including the supply into Trento of shoes parts, materials and accessories was too short of a lead time for the finished shoes to be delivered with the 10 days predetermined time. On average, the earliest that Trento could deliver to Elle Sport was between 15 to 20 days.
Often, the type of shoes specified by Elle Sport could not be supplied in time for the manufacturing schedule. Trento currently has around 15 local suppliers and 20 overseas suppliers.
At Trento, the order process is done by 5 purchasing personnel who are also in-charge of ordering all other items, from office stationery to parts for manufacturing equipment/machinery. Trento is yet to computerise its ordering system even though it is being pressured by its major customers to do so. The ordering is undertaken by verbal calls which are then followed up by written purchase orders posted out.
Often, the procurement staff wrote the order incorrectly or the writing was ineligible and order process had to be redone. There is a "logistics" group which is responsible for distribution, warehousing, and inwards freight. It works largely independently while procurement, marketing, and other departments operate on their own procedures.
Management is very concerned by Trento’s inability to cater adequately to the customer’s needs and to date; two major clients had cancelled their contract with Trento. Management could foresee that if nothing was done, Elle Sport, their largest account, may soon follow suit and switch to another supplier.
This is quite easy but very important task and good work will be rewarded accordingly. We expertise and knowledge it should be done in 7 days
