We are looking for someone who is a very experienced maths tutor but who is also a good writer.
We are trying to make a widget for our website, a calculator that calculates for parents "how much tutoring" they should get for their child. The calculator will have various different fields for the user to chose values from and once they select them, the calculator will show them pre-written text that is tailored to their situation. The available fields will be:
- what grade is the student in (3-12)
- what is their current position (top of class, above average, average, below average, bottom of class)
- what is their desired goal (top of class, above average, average, below average, bottom of class)
- what is the student's motivation like (very motivated, willing to work with a push, likely to resist making effort)
The calculator will then show the user the "explanation" that you wrote about their situation and a recommended amount of tutoring.
EXAMPLE. Grade 3 - currently top of the class - goal to stay at top of the class - motivated student
____"If your son/daughter is right at the top of their class, wants to stay there, and is a very motivated student, we would first need to understand why you think they need tutoring? We also want to make sure that they are happy to try tutoring and it doesn't negatively affect the effort they are already putting in. Tutoring can help keep the student at the top of the class. Typically we would do this with a combination of (1) teaching the student content ahead of their class (2) focusing on practicing especially difficult problem solving questions (3) spending time developing exam skills (4) doing regular revision to ensure student is constantly developing deeper comprehension of foundational topics.
Recommended tutoring is 1 hour per week, or 1 hour per fortnight, depending on the competitiveness of your child's environment. A student who is doing well because they are intrinsically motivated and already working hard makes tutoring much easier, and so, usually a little less tutoring is necessary."______
EXAMPLE. grade 4 student - currently below average - goal to get to above average - willing to work with a push-
___This is a very achievable jump for a reasonably motivated student in grade 4. With enough effort and support they can surely bridge that gap. After covering a few trouble topics, learning some better strategies and exam technique the student should start to feel much better about their competence. The cycle of success should kick into gear and performance will improve, and hopefully their work ethic too.
The concern here is that if improvement takes a bit too long, the student may start feeling the desire to give up since they are not really 100% self motivated. This is something we really want to avoid.
We recommend 1 hour once per week and make sure the student is getting plenty of practice between tutorials. However, if you feel the student is not progressing fast enough or not doing much work between lessons to feel positive about their progress, you may want to try a short burst of 1 hour twice per week.___
GOAL OF PROJECT
We are a home tutoring company, and we want to increase billable hours by increasing the volume and frequency of tutoring. Most parents call and ask for the standard 1 hour per week, however, often this is not enough and just results in ongoing long - term tutoring without much actual improvement. In many cases 1.5 hour lessons would be more effective, allowing tutors to spend time instilling comprehension instead of just having enough time to answer all the student's questions. Other situations call for 1 hour twice per week, especially in senior grades and if the student is trying to get to the top of the class, or if the student is close to failing. Intense short-term tutoring is much more effective than semi-consistent passive long term tutoring. It works better for students, for tutors, and for our company profits. So we want to make this widget to help re-educate clients and tutors and encourage more people to do more frequent lessons or longer lessons.
WHAT WE WANT
We have already done grade 3 and 4, but we need someone to do the rest of the grades. To write a snippet of useful, helful information about each situation and corresponding advice about how much tutoring the student should have. IMPORTANT - it needs to be useful helpful content, it is not supposed to sound promotional, just informative.
