I have a backyard that needs help. We live in a semi-rural area within an urban setting. We live on a peninsula, about 500 ft above sea level, about 1/4 mile from the shore (no view to preserve). Because we are in southern California, we need to be prepared for long draughts. This backyard has been unattended for many years.
Hardscape that will remain are: brick paver patio and (white) aluminum pergola that is the same dimension of the patio. There is a brick paver path along the back of the house that parallels the outside outline of the house.
I only want to preserve the fig tree and the lemon tree and surrounding area (see diagram). I am willing to move some of the plantings near the lemon tree if need be.
I would like shade areas and am willing to consider 1-2 (max) seating areas separate from the patio. I like a variety of trees (Jacaranda, some citrus; not loquat or trees with similar patterns of fruit, shedding, and volunteer trees).
I want a backyard that is low maintenance with ground cover, and not predominantly grass plantings. I need plans and direction on specific plants that thrive in this area to purchase. My U.S. zip code is 90275 (I think that helps locate the climate).
I will consider having some of the heavy work done by local persons, e.g., ground roto-tilling. I can enclose pictures of landscape plantings that are in the same environment that I have admired if that would be helpful. I am enclosing pictures of the existing yard (flat, fenced (cannot be moved)) and a grid (not completely to scale, though measurements are very close).
I am open to bids. I have had 2 professional companies bid the design alone for approximately $6,000 and $10,000, which is 6-10X higher than I can afford for this project.
I am looking for a mix of experience and value
