The booking system uses two spreadsheets similar to excel. The one on the left has data in rows which are colour coded to indicate the type of emergency surgical case (red for class one, yellow for class two and green for class three. Class four cases are coloured blue).
Cases are added to the bottom of the list on the left (the pre-operative side) and they travel up the left sided spreadsheet. The left sided spreadsheet is on continuous secure display over the internet. This allows certified stakeholders (e.g. surgeons and nurses) to see the position of their case in real time. As each case reaches the top of left spreadsheet an SMS notification is sent out to individual stakeholders cell phone.
After the case has been completed in the Operating Room it is added to the top of the right-hand spreadsheet (the post-operative side) and it travels downward. At the end of every 24 hour period, the right-hand spreadsheet is recorded in a digital format for secure archiving.
The collected digital data is submitted for analytics at one day, one week, one month, three-month and one-year intervals. In this way, a continuous data stream is created to inform decisions regarding resource allocation.
